All the vets are closed and I am out of lactated ringers. (I am a vet tech) I took in 4 rescues tonight and they are going down hill. I have gatoraide, apple juice, and pedylite. They will not drink by mouth. I also have liquid calcium carbonate, sodium bicarb, sodium chloride, and a few other meds. Anything I can give them sub-q that will get them for about 3 more hours?

You will need to get them hydrated ASAP! Where are you? I have a bag of I.V fluids for gliders here. You can use the insulin needles and go just under the skin behind the neck. You cannot to my knowledge give them anything else but the I.V fluids.

Do you know how to force feed? Put the Pedialyte in a syringe WITHOUT needle, hold them in your left hand and feed the Ped inside the mouth towards cheek. You don't want to aspirate them so you will have to be very careful! Don't point the syringe toward the throat!

Have you done a tent test? Are you sure they are dehydrated or could something else be going on?

Use your thumb and forefinger on each side of head to gently squeeze mouth open to force feed.

No, I've done the tent test and they are dehydrated. Some of the gliders even had fur come out when I did it. I have force feed puppies before, but am afraid to do it to these little ones. I have gotten them to take some fluids by mouth finally, but they arent moving much and are falling all in their BML. I'm in KY

Are any of these meds injectable?

If so sub q them with, in order of preference

sweet ringers
D5W
normal saline

Keep us posted

I'm about 3 hours from you SugarBlossoms. I think I'm just going to keep trying with fluids by mouth and keep calling around to see if any vets will come in early for me.

Right now they need fluids, warmth and sugar in their systems.

Keep them warm and try either the sub q or by mouth hydration. By mouth you can also use honey water. Honey is high in glucose which is used as fuel by the brain and will keep their blood sugar up.

Once you get something in them, give them about 10 minutes and try again by mouth. They will not take much at first, but in a few minutes will have a little more strength to take a little more by mouth.

If you sub q them, they will perk up quickly and you can then push some sugars by mouth. Once you have their blood sugar up, they will be able to eat food, like the bml.

It sounds like they just do not have the strength to eat.

Once you get them taken care of, take a minute to register, it is fast, easy and free and will allow you to access all areas of the board.

Godspeed

Oh no...I was so hoping we were close together!

Yes, keep trying with fluids.

If you register, we can PM you. Let us know what city you in or close to and we can help find a vet.

Please let us know how they are. We are praying for you all!

Thank you ALL! The honey water worked and they are drinking alot of it and moving around better. I did find a vet who will open for me in an hour and get me some ringers and let me get some tests ran.

So glad to hear they perked up and that you were able to find a vet to help them out.

Looking for an update on their condition.

We are keeping you in our prayers.
