The USDA has a published list of minimum daily requirements for nutrients, vitamins, and minerals for people. Such a thing doesn't exist for pets. Not even dogs or cats have a list of recommended daily allowances, and sugar gliders surely don't. So how are the different diets balanced and to who's standard?

Depends on the diet. Some have been studied with vets and such here other here as well as in australia. There was recently a small study done in the U.S. but it was not conclusive to anything other than the gliders were severly overstressed. diet for any species is difficult. What works for one will not work as well for another. You have to find what works best for you. diet facts can change. Remember when eggs were good, then they were really bad for you and now they say that they were wrong that eggs are not that bad as long as you are not eating a dozen a day? Moderation and variety is the key to everything.
Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

So none of the present diets have a common specific ratio obtained from one source?

Okay, I can't find exactly what I'm looking for and I'm certainly no expert - only know what I've read on here. But I believe that the diets are going off of the ratios of at least 33% proteins 67% fresh fruits and vegetables, not to exceed 50% proteins. Although 25/75 is also a common ratio. The diets are also formulated with a Calcium to Phosperous ratio - maybe 2:1?? Burbon would be a great person to answer your questions (she's the "B" in BML). Bourbon is her screen name here. I'm assuming you can PM her, but I don't know how many PMs she gets per day or how long it takes her to get them answered. HTH

So none of the present diets have a common specific ratio obtained from one source? No they don't which is why some diets work well with some gliders, and others don't. It's up to you to find the diet that works best for your babies. It's important to note that unlike dogs, cats, and humans gliders are specialized feeders, feeding on a specific series of food types (i.e. plant exudates, flowers, inverts) and they are thus very tied to their ecology, and are limited to certain areas in the world where their food exists. Their digestive systems for millions of years have evolved to process these foods. In light of the above, one should consider that not all gliders in the wild consume the same food. Their diet depends on where (i.e. what region in Australia, Indonesia, etc) they live, considering that different regions have different species of flora and fauna, and thus provide the gliders different nutrient amounts. With this in mind, and in light of the fact that gliders' digestive systems are designed to feed on the specific foods they eat, you may understand that because our gliders have interbred over the years from various both captive and wild lines (from all over Oceana, not just Indonesia), it's hard to say "Yes, this is the exact amount of Nutrient A gliders need, and this is the exact amount of Nutrient B gliders need, and this is the exact... etc." It's why there isn't going to be the glider diet nutrition chart anytime soon. The learning curve is all part of the process of domesticating a recently wild animal. Mikey

35% carbohydrates, 20-25% protein(not protein source, crude protein) and 2:1 Ca/P ratio. If I remember right, that seemed to be the ratios I arrived at when looking at things a few years ago. I might be off a bit and remembering wrong, but I think that is what the consensus may have been. I'm sure that there were some sort of target figures used by people to get the other diets out there. Hi Mikey, long time no see on the cyber-side!
