Have new mom. Babies 2 weeks out of pouch. Mom has Diarrhea. Took to vet, said bacterial and some other infection. Put on antibiotic, Metronidazole with Pepto Bismal. He did not know if this would hurt babies or give them diarrhea from the antibiotic. Anyone know?

Cindy, while I don't have any first hand experience with a nursing mom on meds, I would think a small portion of the meds would be passed on to the babies in mom's milk. I have no idea if it'll give them diarrhea, so I'd recommend keeping a very close eye on them/their poo so that you can catch it fast if it does happen as becuase they're so small, they can dehydrate very quickly from diarrhea. Please keep us updated smile

I do not know about gliders, but in humans Flagyl (Metronidazole) does cross over into breast milk. I would assume that if your mom is getting the meds, then the babies will too. This antibiotic does not usually cause the diarrhea that most will (again in humans). Just, as Becki said, keep a close eye on the little guys.

Thank you so much for the answers. At this point I am assuming that it would be better to try to leave with mom (infection, antibiotic & all) than to try to separate and ween?

Unless it's a pouch infection, then I'd say yes it's better to leave them with mom wink

I had asked someone a little while back on baytril given to mom who is sick they told me that both baytril and flagyl were ok to give to mom while she has babies. So this should not hurt the babies if mom is getting these meds.

I had to put my female on flagyl and a Batryil while she was nursing a 2 week oop joey because she contracted giardia.

I got varying answers on whether it was better to pull to the joey or leave the joey with mom. If the joey is pulled - it does take the stress off of the mother to have to care for and nurture the babies...however, sometimes pulling the babies will stress the moms even more making them more susceptible to the illness. If you do leave the babies with mom, sometimes nursing the babies will not allow her body the strength to recover.

I personally chose to leave the baby with mom but suppliment feed and help with babysitting. At this point, I would start the mom on the meds and keep a close eye on how she handles the stress with the babies. If babies apper to be getting neglected I would start will supplimenting them and, if need be, pull completely.

Good luck.
