EDUCATE YOURSELF this can not be stressed enough, KNOW where to go to get assistance from people with experience on this.KNOW who to contact when you need help in these cases, as stated above an hour may be too late. be prepared.

I was reading the post "WILL your glider Self Mutilate". The above quote is taken from the thread. I'm praying I never have to experience this, but I'd still like to be prepared as it states. I'm not very familiar with the people who know a lot about this, so I am asking for someone to please reply with those who know a bit about what they are doing with SMs. It's obvious that I'm located in FL by my name, so is there anyone in particular close to this state or in the state that has experience?

I'm simply compiling a list of people to preferably ask for advice from in case my worst nightmare comes true and my baby turns into a SM. It's always good to be prepared.

If there is already a list compiled, or I can simply reference the thread I am getting this from, just let me know and this post doesn't need to go any further. Thanks.

I have taken care of a Self Mutilator before and know a bit about it and I'm always here. I think my phone number is on the gliderhealth site for this.Bourbon is the one that knows the most about this so if it was my glider I would want to be in touch with her myself. Sorry B LOL I know she don't mind I am just joking. She actually loves to help people as much as she can.

FlKeysGlider, I added the links in for the sm's on the "Will Your Glider Self Mutilate" it has everything you need to get you started there.

Danielle , yes you are on the emergency contact list as well.

In most cases I would agree with you, where the SM's are concerned however I do not. I don't think that just anyone can help out the owners of sm's in an emergency, or even at the onset, with the exception of getting them to the people they need to talk to. learn yes, everyone can learn from each case. Far too many times, I have seen well intentioned people try to offer help to owners of sm's. and the owners trying to take care of the situation on their own, to be honest it is like the blind leading the blind, you can read till your face turns blue, but until you experiece it, you never get the real grasp of the situation.

The best way to help the owners of possible SM's is to get them in contact with the sm community, It IS a specialized problem that REQUIRES specialized help.

Many times I want to scream when I come on the board and see multiple posts to possible sm owners.

if you see a post that may need immediate help, contact to the sm community needs to be made. there is an emergency contact list it needs to be utilized in these cases, have them speak directly to one of those people, we can help in many many ways. we don't sugar coat anything and we tell them what they need to hear.

everyone that helps prolongs the ecollar and vet care, is assuming partialy responsible for the life of that glider.

SO many times we watch the same thing over and over again. it is not just the well intioned people it is also the owner themselves. It is their responsibility, to heed the advice of those that know what is going on.

in a recent case, the owner was told to contact one of us, and was also told to put a collar on, they chose to ignore the advice, and chose to find other things to do, advice was given, but it was the wrong advice. The right advice was also given, it is natural to want to help, but it also more common for the owners to take an easy way out.

These are special cases. I an only plead to everyone to please, please help the owner the best you can, make them contact one of us, make them get a collar on (this is best done under either one of our direction or the vets.) We know what to expect, we know how they will react, and we know what to watch for, let us decide whether the problem is a true sm or not. Make them learn what is happening BEFORE damage is done.

the Chances of the vet knowing what to do with a sm is slim, the owners ned contact numbers and tests lists, and the support of the sm community to help their vet help them.

Bindy and Danielle can both tell you the horror story of Bindy's glider Spike, when a well intentioned person told her not to put a collar on him. and gave a bunch of reasons why not. she didn't know who to listen to, he was well established in the exotic community, and she placed her trust in him. In the end, she realized the importance of the personal experience that we could have shared with her. She is now part of the sm community, trying to help others not make the same mistakes. we all have made them, and many more will. Preparation is EVERYTHING.

to anyone else that thinks I sound pompus on this, and they think they have more information that we do, contact us, lets discuss it, these are not simple hair losses or tip of tail chewers, these cases chew HOLES in their cloaca and gut, and die. they can rip their chest wide open or tear holes through their pouch, sometimes only in a matter of hours.

These cases are life and death cases. There are times, no matter how hard we try, (owners as well) that it is just too late. we MUST work harder on catching them early (be prepared), and getting them in a collar BEFORE it gets worse.

I suggest every glider owner have at least one ecollar kept with their glider supplies. I really believe a collar is what equals life or death to many of these gliders. Some glider owners do not notice the damage until it is extensive, so take some time daily to interact with your glider to watch for any behavior changes. An owner with sm experience along with a vet with experience is from whom you should take advice. If sm was to occur it is easy to do the wrong thing and difficult to do the right, so you need the support and guidance of those that have experience and will tell you what you need to hear not what you want to hear. Any of those listed on the glider health website can help guide you in sm, however it is still that glider's owner to follow through. Keep learning all that you can in preventing any illness in your glider through diet, cleaning, and interaction as you have a great start.

The post by Bourbon is so true. When a glider starts to mutilate it is not a time for hesitation and searching for opinions. Go to the Glider Health site and seek help from one of these experienced people imediately.

I don't like to be critical, but too often I have seen people post in the Health section seeking advice. Too often members, though well intentioned, post advice that can do more harm than good. Before posting advice on caring for a glider with any health issues, you need to give a lot of thought to what you are posting. It is far too easy to steer someone in the wrong direction. When someone posts bad advice and another member comes along to correct them it only adds to the confusion. And even worse yet, when no one does come on and post a correction.

Every glider owner should go to the Glider Health site and study it as well as reading the articles at the begining of the Health forum on Self Mutilation and the Dangers of Self Diagnosis.

Thanks for all of the advice. I will be sure to post on the Glider Health secion in the appropriate spot if, Gosh forbid, my baby turns in to a SM. I've come to a point in my preparation for her that I needed to touch basis with this topic as much as it bothers me, it HAS to be prepared for. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it in my eyes, and shouldn't be in anyone else's, either. Thanks again, I'll feel slightly more comfortable now that I know who is experienced in this area.
