I went to look at some gliders today from a lady that was
selling them for under 100$ and when I got there I was
shocked. She had four male gliders, seperated in pairs.

One of the pairs cage wasnt even a foot tall, they had no
toys, no food ( all they had were apples and almonds?) and
they only had one pouch that was really thin and covered in
trash like grass leaves.. ect. plus the gliders were living
in her cold garage, since it's winter here it's too cold in
there.

and I couldnt leave there without getting atleast one pair
because it's all my parents would let me have, so i got
the pair in the smaller cage and took the directly home.
I feed them first thing and they ate like theyve ever eaten
before. I just have a couple of questions of what I should
feed them to get them back to health quickly.

+ their nails. Their nails are extremly long and their
getting stuck on everything but they arent willing to let
me get close enough to cut them, and I worried for them
because I don't want them to get caught on anything and get
stuck. so does anyone have an opinions?

oops and one more thing. Does anydoby know any how you
can tell the age of sugar gliders, after they have reached
maturity?

+ if anybody lives near Orlando, Florida and wants to go
get the other gliders and put them in better homes just
tell me and I will send you the ladys email. I would take
them but I really can't right now.

I'd say a vet check is in order ASAP.

As for food, alot of people on here, including me, feed BML. You can research diets here:
DIET LINKS <click here>

You can wrap them up in mesh - like the laundry bags for washing delicates. Then their claws stick thru, and you can cut them. You will have to sort of catch them to accomplish this. I recommend using a piece of fleece to scoop them up with, then popping them (and the fleece) into the mesh bag.

I don't know about the maturity. I am assuming they have their bald patch? That really doesn't tell you anything about age - only about maturity.

no no no. I now about diets. I've had gliders before.
I was just asking if there was anything additional I
could do to help them get better quicker.

and thanks about the advice on how to clip their nails :]
I will definately try that.

I don't think there's much else you can do in the diet department besides to get them on a proper diet, such as BML. Maybe you could offer them some healthy treats that they probably haven't had in a while, such as a bit of yogurt and some mealworms?

i would make sure that they arent dehydrated.. if you know how to do the pinch test, that would be the FIRST thing you can do.. if they seem a little dehydrated, pedialyte is good. You also can give them Gliderade once a week. It has additional nutrients and such for gliders and can be combined with most of the approved diets. That will also ensure that they are not dehydrated. Its a good thing you got them. Just curious though, did you try to educate the "breeder" about suggie needs? maybe you could give her a call back and tell her to check out this website. just make sure you choose your words carefully. People get offended easliy when it comes to caring for certain things and there "jobs" But really, one thing i ALWAYS tell people is that if you can get the gliders out of there, the next best thing to do is educate. some people are just lazy and dont care, but other people really appreciate the info. Tell her if she does learn more about gliders, she will have happier, healthier gliders that are easier to sell AND she can make more money that way. I mean, you know she's probably going to continue breeding gliders either way, so why not try to get her to do it the right way.. thats just a suggestion

She wasnt breeding them. Because she had all boys that were
just pretty much her pets. and when I saw they only had
apples in their cage I asked her what kind of diet she had
them on and she said noramally bml but lately she's been to lazy / busy to re make it and too busy to play with them like she should. I did say things to educate her on them but she seemed to already know, she just wasnt doing anything.
I think it was just lack of motivation to do it all because
she also had other animals out there in the garage that I
didnt think were taken care as good as they should be.

and I did check if they were dehydrated and they werent,
they did have water in with them so they werent without completly everything.

but I plan on taking them to the vet tomorrow anyways,
because the bigger one of the two just seems to sit
around and not move and he's acting really sluggish.

Well sounds like they are in better hands now… I hope a proven diet speeds them to health… as for aging .. that can be tricky … you said you got a pair… Male / Female ??? I am assuming the male already has his bald spot … if intact … it can be very hard to age gliders after maturity…

On a side note … As a concerned and local (FL) glider owner, I would like request that you PM me with any details you have, thank you..

In addition to the back to basics BML, I would suggest for the first week, adding a teaspoon per glider per day of yogurt. It will help them fight off any bacterial imbalances they might have from stress.

Check the ingredients list. You want to avoid yogurts that are made with aspartime or other artificial sweeteners. Otherwise any yogurt flavor (except chocolate) will work. Mine seem to like strawberry bananna flavor even tho they won't touch either strawberries or bananas if I give it to them. Silly kids
