I just brought a new pair of gliders home saturday. They seem to be doing fine, but last night Becca the female threw up twice. It was all liquid. Then she ate, drank, and played like nothing happened. Her and her mate are about a year old. She has not had any joeys. She has not throwed up anymore since then. Any suggestions? She was licking herself alot last night like she had joeys ip or that she gave birth. Is it normal for first time moms to throw up like that?

It is never normal for a suggie to throw up. You need to get them into a vet ASAP. Suggies hide their illnesses as in the wild a sick suggie will fall prey to predators. By the time a suggie looks sick, they are seriously ill. Please keep us posted.

Julie, Sometimes, throwing up can be caused by stress. I had one glider who was so stressed after I brought her home that she became claustrophobic and every time I put her into a bonding pouch she would throw up all over herself. Once I realized that she was stressed about the bonding pouch, I started leaving the top of it open and she never threw up again. I would certainly bring Becca to the vet to eliminate the possibility of illness, but keep in mind that it may just be stress-induced since you just brought her home on Saturday... Please keep us posted...

I really think that it was stress, but I am still going to take her in to the vet.

Please have your vet run a fecal. One afternoon I caught my glider up in her cage vomiting. After she vomitied she drank a little water and went back to sleep. The only sign I had that she was sick (and continued to stay sick) was occassional vomiting. It turned out she had giardia - but not until she got much worse, did any other signs than occasional vomiting occur. Good luck at the vet and please update when you get back.

Giardia is a parasite. If you do a search on google, you'll find tons of information on it.

Although this information does not specifically apply to sugar gliders, you'll get a good idea from these sites: Fact sheet from the CDC Giardia and Drinking Water from Private Wells

Could someone tell me when they see their glider vomiting, do they see the usual abdominal contractions and retching that you see with people? One night I saw my male vomiting. At first i didn't know what was going on. He didnt throw up like we do, he just shook his head and about 2cc worth of food came out and splattered everywhere. I didn't know where the food had come from at first, then I saw him do it again. My gliders are regularly checked by the vet and are free of parasites... etc... So it turns out, he was hungry and eating food very fast from the bowl that had not defrosted from my freezer (veggie fruit mix). He was giving himself "brain freeze" (ever drink too much frosty too fast?!) and throwing it all out of his system, but he would run right back to the bowl and eat more. Once I warmed it up some, this stopped. I had him checked at the vet again the next morning. He found nothing wrong with him. I didnt run blood work because he was acting normal other than the splatter incident, i just monitored him closely. Its been a month and he is still healthy as ever, and no more splattering/vomiting events. So I do attribute his incident with the very cold food. Just my 2 cents. Also I was just curious for my own sake, when gliders do vomit do they show the same signs as people and other animals: drooling, inappetance, stomach contractions (heaving)? I have never seen it personally and just wanted a point of reference.

She is not vomitting anymore. She is just fine. Turns out it was just from stress. When she did vomit though she kept dry heaving. To me it did look like a human.
