We have a glider that we believe has babies in her pouch. The male became very agitated about a month ago. He would not eat and bit at us when we fed him. He started to appear weak and shake alot. He passed away. Now my female who still has a healthy appetite and she eats every day has begun to shake and act as if she is having trouble balancing on her perch. I don't want her to die also. What could this be?

If she is shaking and having trouble holding on to the perch, it sounds like it MAY be hind leg paralysis (HLP). What diet are you feeding? Is she getting appropriate vitamins and nutrients? HLP can also be caused by infection. This is in no way a complete diagnosis and I am no expert, and as mentioned already, it is extremely important that you get her to a vet immediately.

I would say take her to a vet asap... what diet is she on?

she eats fruits and vegtables...boiled eggs occasionally and she also has lean turkey occasionally. she gets plenty of calcium. more veggies than anything. She can climb and hold herself up she is just appearing feable like she could fall off at any moment. like she is struggling to keep balance. i am trying to find a vet that will see her but so far no luck.

Here is the link to the vet database. If you post your city, a member may be able to refer you to a glider experienced vet.

As already stated by many: it is IMPERATIVE that you get her to a vet RIGHT NOW! Please do not delay. Shaking and inability to hang on to her perch are very serious symptoms. When a glider gets to the point that they are visibly ill, time is of the essence.
It is very possible that she has calcium insufficiency due to an imbalanced diet. We can go into proper diet information more when you get back from the vet's. If you don't already have a vet, please let us know where you are so we can help you locate one.

Just as a reminder-shaking as described is frequently a sign of later-stage HLP, when the muscles can no longer function properly, as my Riker had 4 1/2 years ago and I almost lost him.

As above, a vet is critical, and immediately, or you very well may lose mom and babies. HLP is a calcium deficiency that can be caused either by insufficient calcium in the diet, or an infection. Posting the diet can help us tell if the cause is most likely lack of calcium or high phosphorus in the diet, or if something else is more likely, to help you and your vet. Without treatment, however, you're likely to lose both mom and babies. And with calcium deficiency, because of nursing joeys, a mom will go downhill even faster that dad-please get help for her.

Suggies by nature hide their symptoms when they are not healthy - so they don't fall victim to prey. By the time symptoms like this are showing it is positively time for a vet! Let us know what happens smile

I agree with xfilefan, be sure to have the fecal smear, urinalysis and bacterial c&s ran BEFORE meds are prescibed
