long story, i was house-sitting, someone else was feeding.
i came home tonight and one of my gliders had gotten her back leg caught in the bedding. i took her out to free her, but to my horror, she had gnawed her own paw off in an attempt to get free.
she doesn't seem to be in any pain, and there isn't any blood. i'm taking her to the vet first thing in the morning, but is there anything i can do now? i've been feeding her (she must've been hungry because she couldn't get to her food dish) she has a little joey that has been oop for a week and a half. i'm just so worried, but i don't have the money for an emergency vet visit right now. and anyway, i don't know what they could do right now!

ok, I had a female do this to her tail once when we had a hurricane. she did not bleed either, but the vet is necessary to prevent infection. Clean the wound with warm water, and see if you can keep her occupied till morning, then take her to the vet as early as possible. she may not be bleeding, but she may still need stitches. Most importantly, you need to calm down yourself, as she will feel your stress.

If she is still feeding the joey, leave it alone for now. She may need help i nthe coming weeks because it is a good possibility that she is in shock right now--this could cause her to lose some of her milk. Keep her warm tonight, keep feeding her if she will eat and to the vet asap. infection and shock are the two most dangerous things right now, warmth and food will help the shock and the vet will help fight infection.

I am very sorry to hear she had this problem. You said she got caught up in her pouch? A toenail?

She really needs a vet ASAP. Is there no way you can go ahead and take her? Where are you located? I would be very concerned about infection, watch for any signs, such as redness, drainage, swelling or if she runs a fever. Give her extra fluids for sure, if you can, keep her on you so she will be kept warm. I use Neosprin with pain relief on minor scratches, but this is a major trauma and I don't think it would be helpful. She may have really damaged some nerves if she is in no pain, protect her from any further falls or possible injuries until you see the vet. Please keep us updated. This should remind us all to check our pouches, and toys for any threads or snags to keep our babies safe. I am so sorry and will keep you and your baby in my thoughts and prayers tonight.

Glidinforlove and AngieH's suggestions were great, the only thing I would add is that you might want to put an Ecollar on her...you want to make sure she leaves that injury alone... also make sure she is drinking water and not dehydrated from being away from her water bottle. Pedialyte or a 50/50 mix of water and apple juice are usually recommended for dehydration until you can get to a vet for subQ fluids.

I hope everything turns out ok, please keep us posted and let us know if there is anything we can do to help!

Clean the wound with warm water and soap. Is she still chewing on it by chance?

If possible...trim all of her nails and throw out the pouch if it has a hole in it or frayed. If you have nothing for a bed...offer a cut up tee shirt and a container of some sort to sleep in. If you have a clean fleese pouch with a piece of clean and not worn fleese fabric.....cut the fleese fabric into a 12 inch square to snuggle in....especially if the pouch is lined. Lined pouches are nice but some gliders like to dig in them...thus added fleese blankies will prevent the ripping a hole to get between the fabric lining.

The baby...my suggestion is to supplement feed it four times a day...to be sure it is getting enough milk. Feed the BML mix and dilute it with premixed puppy milk. Tomorrow get a French Cather size #5 which will make feeding much easier along with several insulin syringes from your vet. There is a Sticky(post with a yellow tack)with directions on how to supplement a baby at the top of Breeding and Babies Fourm. Please read it several times and use it as a guide as how to feed the tiny one.

vet care will be needed due to possible infection and possible chewing of the remaining leg. If not bloody....then she should be ok till morning. If bleeding...she needs to be seen ASAP tonight.

It is possible she will only need an antibiotic and a pain med. If there is bone that is exposed...the vet may want to amputate part of the leg but may want to delay it for a week or two to determine how much tissue has been damaged. I would not put any ointment meds on the leg for now. Important to keep it dry and clean.

thankyou for the advice. it's just so heartbreaking to see. she's nursing her baby right now, and when she's not, the dad and other female are taking turns baby-sitting. when i was holding her earlier, she grabbed grapes out of my hands and ate well, she also jumpped down and started to crawl around, so i guess that's a good sign.
as for how she did it, i think she got caught in a loose thread of her pouch, and when she struggled it just twisted it around worse. i just hope she wasn't caught like that for too long

Making an e-collar: take a butter lid (like from a country crock) cut it 4 inches rounf, then a 3/4 in hole in the center, cutting a line into the hole. Put it around her neck, coning it and tape with medical tape on the outside. Make sure her joey is comfortable and take it off every few hours so she can adjust her joey with supervision. And if you hear tssing-check on the joey. An e-collar will prevent further damage, but i have never used one on a female with a young joey. Best of luck and we are thinking of you. .

Yes, please use the e-collar if you will not have her on you where you can observe her constantly. Also, with my experience you may want to try feeding the joeys with an eyedropper if you aren't experienced with the french cath, I have used the eyedropper nurerous times with my joeys with great outcomes so far.

I would not use an e-collar if the glider's leg is not bloody and life threatening. E-collars are really stressfull....and with a baby the mother needs to be able to clean her pouch area as well as the little one. The collar will complicate matters.

VERY Good point, we don't know how she would react with a joey--I agree with Judie, no blood and she is not chewing--keep her warm and calm. Sorry dear, probably no sleep for you tonight. . . not that you would be able to sleep anyway.

i'm wearing a shirt with a built-in bra, so i put her and the joey inside between my boobs, they seem content, so i'll leave them there for a while. she uses the leg still, like she doesn't know the foot is gone, but it seems like she can put pressure on it. i can't get a good look at the leg, she keeps twisting around, but i think i might be seeing bone. sigh.

Keep her warm and well hydrated as well as hand feed her for tonight.

Please update this thread once you see the vet tomorrow.

well, here's the update.
i just got home from the vet, and he said there was nothing to be done (this is of course after gidgit lept onto him and bit his thumb multiple times!)
he said the the majority of healing had already taken place, that the wrapped thread probably cut the circulation off, killing the tissue, so she gnawed it off. the god thing about that is that it enabled the part just above the thread to heal before the foot was removed.
he said there was no longer a risk of infection since the scar tissue had already covered it and that he could do a surgery to remove some of the bone that is just under the scar, but that would only cause more problems.
i asked if she was in pain, and he said that since she was using that leg so much, it wasn't likely.
so now i have a peg-legged, pirate sugar glider =)
but at least she's alive and ok.
thankyou all for the advice, it really helpped calm me down

I am so happy to hear that she is ok. Thanks so much for keeping us updated. I am sure she will completely adjust in no time at all. It sounds as if she has adjusted to it quite a bit alraedy.

[:"magenta"]sounds like someone was watching over you and your little one. and what a pill she is, biting the vet! she let him know who was boss, huh? i am so glad things are working out well. just keep an eye on her to make sure she is not chewing the injury, and there is no sign of infection (redness, swelling, etc.) keep us posted on her progress. Glad to hear she is doing better. . .now you can get her a baby shower gift--some new pouches. There are some great safe ones available all over. Make sure to turn them inside out and check them very closely, the little tiny nails can get into such a tiny stitch, we often overlook them. I am soo happy that the joey is not injured and that she is not in pain.
