Hi, I have noticed in some pics where some of you seasoned pros have put things at the bottom of the cage to catch the, well, you know. I was wondering what options there are. My cage has the pull out shelf at the bottom and I just line it with printer paper. Do you recommend something else? Thanks for your help.

I have seen many on here using plain paper towels or newspaper. When and if using newspaper, contact the people who work for the newspaper and make sure the ink is made from vegetable oils (I believe it's oils?) Someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong about that. But, I do know you have to make sure the ink isn't toxic to them and from what I hear most newspapers these days are up to par on the healthy ink usage.

Also, if you want to try shavings, which seem to me to be messy, do not use cedar or pine. Aspen is OK for bedding use.

Have you tried a quick search on this website with "bedding" in the subject or body of the threads? I just recently explored this topic and found it to be of great help.

Here are some threads I pulled up for you:

I use care fresh (the white kind) and a lay of paper towels on top, this way the paper towel catches the leftover foods... I just replace the paper towel every morning. The care fresh bedding is changed every week. I also do a wipe down every other day between deep cleanings.

I know you're not supposed to use clay cat litter, but what about this: Papurr
It's cat litter made from recycled paper, when we pour it it produces very little dust which we let settle before putting the babies back in their cage.
They never touch the litter because their cage has "legs" that hold the bottom (made of coated wire) above the litter tray. Their previous owners gave us the bag of the stuff they'd been using. Should we get something else?
Thanks

Thank you so much. I didn't think about doing a thread. I'll try that in the future.

We were using CareFresh, which is excellent. But we've found an easier, less expensive, less messy way that works great for us. We cut a large polar fleece square to fit perfectly in the drop pan of each cage. Every 4-5 days, we take them outside, shake them off, and throw them in the wash. If you make several for each pan, it's easy to rotate them from cage to wash w/o missing a beat. And since you can get the fleece in so many patterns, you can enhance the appearance of your cage at the same time. We got a mottled green pattern that looks very natural and fits in with the "decor" of the cage.
An extra hint there,too....you can take the same kind of polar fleece, cut it into long strips, and braid it into climbing ropes that you can string all over the cage. If you pull a zip tie tightly around the rope at the end and then attach a small double-ended snap to the zip tie, they are easily removed from the cage for washing. Our guys love swinging thru the "jungle".
Hope this is of some help to you!

I personally would never recommend the kitty litter. I would stick with the typical stuff such as newspaper, paper towels, shredded fleece, computer paper, aspen shavings, steel oats, etc.. There are a ton of things to choose from that are good and safe. I would stick with what has been tried and not casued a problem for anyone. Hope this helps.

[:"magenta"]kitty litter is unsafe for at least two reasons. firstly, it may make dust, which can get into the sgs lungs. secondly, if they ingest it, it could cause intestinal blockage. kitty litter is unsafe for ferrets as well, so do not feel bad. I just bought some Carefresh today, I want to make sure that nothing in it is toxic to the suggies. It doesn't say on the package what it is made up, just that it is NOT made from Cedar or Pine. Someone else said they used it and it was excellent, this is okay then?

Polar fleece, newspaper, and puppy pads is what I use. Whatever of the three that I have on hand .
