Female Pouch Sticking Out? #226689

My 1-yr old glider's pouch (Bailey) is sticking out. We took her to the vet and the vet said it was possibly due to overgrooming and we need to get her a friend. We got a young female friend for her and all is going well. The new glider is in a separate cage and we have supervised playtime everynight.

Bailey doesn't seem to be grooming it at all anymore but it still has not gone back inside. The vet had said if it persists then she said a possibility would be to insert some stay sutchures (sp?) to help it heal/strenghthen.

Has anyone ever seen/heard of this? If so, what was the course of action?

Thank you.
Best,
Matt

That sounds like an inverted pouch to me. I have no actual experience with this, but I do know that a friend won't fix the problem. Someone with more experience in this department will be along soon.

I'm not experienced either, but I don't see why her pouch would be sticking out because of overgrooming. Is the vet you went to glider knowledgeable/experienced? Inverted pouch can be caused by bacterial infection. Did the vet do a swab for a culture? (I believe that's what they do, someone more experienced can verify the ins and outs!)
I just don't think that's something that should be totally chalked up to overgrooming, when other important causes aren't ruled out.

She did a culture/sensitivety and looked at it through and through. We had her on Baytril for 2 days BEFORE the vet checked her out. The vet did say it was either from overgrooming or an infection. She said it could be infected but since we had her on Baytril at the time of the exam, the slides did not show anything since the Baytril was started.

Any others with inverted pouch problems in the past?

Thanks,
Matt

Did a vet perscribe the baytril for THIS problem?
Is she on antibiotics now?

Yes, the vet did in case of infection for 2 weeks. Bailey is still on the Baytril until next Monday. The vet also perscribed Bailey Meloxicam for 7 days for pain/inflammation, which she is off now.

Help?

The vet needs to repeat the C & S while she's not on antibiotics. The one done when she had already been on Baytril for 2 days is pretty much useless worried

I was just curious as to why the vet would prescribe the baytril BEFORE the C&S?
Hopefully, as Becki mentioned, it can be done after she's off of it. I believe baytril is broad spectrum. If it is an infection, it may be more resistant, so a broad antibiotic might not be as effective. This may take something a bit more specific.

Thank you. I will call the vet after the Baytril is finished on Monday and take it from there.

How long should we wait for the Baytril to wear off?

Thanks,
Matt

I just went thru this. She has a baby 1 wh oop too.

My vet was in Boston for two days and couldn't see her so I started her on some leftover antibiotics that I had from last month. It went back inside in two days.

It looked like the baby/Burby was nursing but I've been supplementing the her just a bit just in case.

We went to the vet this A.M. and he said I did everything just the way he would have so that made me feel good. I'm still supposed to use the med for eight more days

Paula - what med did you use? Was it the Bayitril that Matt is using?

I know that you mentioned in another post that this is a reoccurring pouch problem for your girl, due to her hormone cycle. Is it also an infection?

I ask because I'm wondering if you used a different antibiotic, and if so, maybe Matt should inquire about that?

No Val, that wasn't me. This was our first, and hopefully the last!!!

I used, and am still using, Trimeth and it seems to be working better than I ever thought.

Paula,

Thanks for the pic. Bailey's pouch is not as severely inverted - there is no nipple showing, just looks like 2 skin tabs or flaps sticking out.

Also, Bailey has never been bred. The other glider we have has been OOP since the end of November and we just picked her up last week. The pouch was inverted prior to us picking the new glider up.

I still wish I knew why this is happening/happened.

How long should I wait for the Baytril to wear off so another C/S test can be given with accurate results?

Thanks,
Matt

Check with your vet, but I believe the waiting period is 3+ days dunno

Ok, thank you. Due to schedules, we may need to wait 1-week once the meds wear off before we can make the 2-hr trek to the vet. We will do our best until then. Does she need emergent care or can we wait 7 days after her last Baytril treatment?

Thank you, everyone.
Matt

You can wait a week, just keep a real close eye on it. if it starts looking inflamed or "off" again in any way, you'll need to get to the vet sooner..

sounds good. Can gliders move their pouches inside and out...I mean, is it a muscular movement for them? The vet had mentioned something about the muscles being weakened and being another possible cause for it to stick out slightly.

Poor little bugger. Thanks!
