my female glider is only 4 months old...she was fine the other night playing like normal, then as quick as last night she was sick, really sick, i knew what it was right away, and i dont see how it is possible for her to have a calcium deficiency, she eats normal, and all...the only thing i can come up with is that mabey her sister wasnt letting her eat, but i see her eat though, so im not sure...but i went to the emergency vet clinic and it was hind leg paralysis, so she gave me liquid calcium, and said she has a chance of not making it:( this sux...any help on this please i want to know what else i can do to help her

u have to keep her from jumping around to much and get her calcium shots put her on the Bourbons leadbeaters diet. and give her high calcium yogurt. she needs first now the calcium shots and a good exotic vet. if its caught early she will survive biut most important dont wait at all. run to a good glider knowledgeable vet and if he dont know about gliders have him contact a vet who does judie has a good vet and mine is great call for dr dan at 919 844 9166 judies vet is dr bradely at 816 331 3120

Chaz, so sorry to hear about your baby. I know how hard you tried to do evrything for her!! As you know gliders hide there illness until its almost to late to help. She is in a better place now and has crossed that bridge.

I'm so sorry for your loss. If your glider was on a good, proven diet (like BML), then there was something else going on keeping the calcium (and probably other nutrients) from being absorbed. Often parasitic conditions like giardia (and others) can do this. So while hind leg paralysis might have been the result, the cause may have been another health problem keeping nutrients from being used by your little girl's body.

The only way to know for sure would have been to have a necropsy done by your vet. But my guess is that your glider was otherwise sick, and it wasn't just a nutritional problem.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Lucy is right. Just because we feed good proven diets does not make us immune to HLP. They can get other illnesses that can cause them not to absorb the Ca from the nutrients we are giving them and they are eating. This is horribly sad and I am so sorry that you had to go through such a thing with such a young joey. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as I know how hard it is to lose a glider when it seems they are in the prime of their life. If she was hosued with any other gliders I would have them checked with a stool sample just to make sure they are ok. If she had somethign such as giardia it is easily passed from one glider to another. Please know we are here with you and will help you through this.

thanks i should have kept her to run test, it was to hard though....im gonna take her sister to the vet asap, and im bringing a list of things the vet needs to do, and if he doesnt feel it is neccesary then im going somewhere else i meen the vet i took her too didnt run any test, and she seemed like she knew what was going on, but i think she didnt do everything she could have, she said that it was just due to diet and said that there was no need for tests..this was the first time i went to this place and the last..i think her sister knows she has past too, now im afraid shes got something too, im gonna keep a good eye on her, and go to the vet first thing monday
thanks everyone for your support

Gosh...this is so sad. The vet Dx'ing HLP when more than likely your little glider's primary illness was from a parasitic or bacterial problem with the HLP being secondary.

When having a wellness exam or if one has a sick glider... the owner must learn to insist on a fecal float if the vet does not request it. Without doing this simple test...the vet is not going to know wither the animal is sick or not and what with. Fecal float...cost is an additional $10.

Please....have the other glider checked for wellness no later than Monday.

Sending 's to you during this sad time.

If you don't mind me asking what diet were you feeding? Also how old was she when you got her? What diet was she fed before you got her? Just curious since the vet seems to think it is diet. I doubt she is right since she didn't run any tests or anything, but I was just curious.

i had her on BML plan and follow the plan exactly...she was only 4 months old, but i got her when she and her sister where 2 months old about..i got them and thier parents. and a little while ago i got 2 gliders which had parasites not giarda but something like it i forgot the exact name, and they where cured i went back twice to make sure it was all gone..but those gliders never had any contact with the little girls, and the effect was different they just had diarria and exxesive urination..these girls had normal BM and didnt seem to urinate exxesivly ..the previouse owner seemed to be feeding them well.

Chaz, I'm sooooo sorry about your little girl. It's a good idea to get the others checked out as well. As for the breeder, previous owner, you need to tell her, so she can check the parents and her other gliders, in case its something they brought with them that they caught from other gliders. That way she can treat them and not have any illness herself. I'm soooo sorry about your little one, it sounds like you are trying very hard to take the very best care of them!

It must have been some sort of illness that was not allowing them to absorb the Ca since they were on such a good diet and were fed well at their previous owners house as well. They may not have had the same symptoms as them and even if they weren't anywhere near one another if you didn't wash your hands between cages just once or didn't wash them well enough they could have caught it. They just didn't show the same symptoms as the other two did. This is highly possible. I would have her sister checked out throroughly just to make sure she is healthy and definately demand a stool float be done. That way you can possibly catch it early in her before she becomes ill; that is if she has it. A necropsy would have helped greatly since she had a cage mate, but it's too late for that. Your doing all you can to make sure she is healthy by taking her to the vet now. Keep us updated on what happens with her sister. She will be in my thoughts and prayers that all will come out ok.

Cross Contamination is a real issue with multi gliders when it comes to parasitic and bacterial infections.

Suggest taking in the glider who was housed with the glider who passed away along with fresh stool samples from your other gliders so vet can do fecal floats on all of them.

If one glider comes up with a problem such as Giardia or coccidia, cryptosporidium or other parasitic problem....then it is best to treat all of the gliders to prevent another possible outbreak. Also, a "total stripdown" of all your cages will need to be done.

Best cleaning solution is... 4 oz. of Bleach to one gallon of hot water with anitbacterial soap added. Then rinse well and air dry.

Chaz, I believe Judie has hit this on the head, I really think this was a bacterial infection, giardia, usually doesn't show hlp type symptoms, but bacterial infections do, have you vet run a c&s on the remaining one, in the meantime have her shot gun them with Baytril till the results come back 7-10 days,

please inform her that HLP doesn't happen that suddenly, and the gliders hide their illnesses, till it is too late, at the minimum, next time, she may take the time to run more tests to rule out hlp.

This is something I did cover in the critters usa 2004 issue, maybe you can get a copy for your vet, it has a bunch of info regarding health issues.

I am so sorry for your loss, please have the others checked.

I am so very sorry Chaz . Everything that needs to be said regarding her illness is above, so please hang in there and you're doing the right thing, checking the others. Stripping down the cage is a great idea to do right now. You're a caring owner, and all my wishes things are ok for the rest of the babies.

I am soooooo sorry that this happend to you. But I have realized that when it comes to vet's you need to really stand your ground. Somethimes people can just be lazy. I know it is there job to do their best, but how do you know? I may only have one glider, and be pretty new to this whole thig, but I also have a dog. You must admit...you know when something is wrong. Thats why you did a great job and took her to the vet. When I brought Sachi in for her first visit I had to insit that they do a fecal on her, I had a feeling something wasnt right. He said she was fine and it was not necessary. So I said I wanted it done and that was in my best interest for Sachi. He ran the fecal and then said that I WAS RIGHT and that she had Giradia. This was right after I got Sachi. When I insisted again on doing a follow up to make sure it was cleared he said that IT WAS NOT NECESSARY. But I insisted again so I made a follow up to do a fecal sample (follow up this saturday)
But you cannot blame yourself. As it was stated before hand. You did everything you possibly could to save this little girl, but it was out of your hands.
If I were you I wouldn't be scared to tell the breeder that she passed. It means NOTHING as to how you treated her...it makes me wonder why she didnt give you one solid diet plan that she was feeding her babies. I would wonder about the breeder's accountability in this situation. I would call and ask her/him what they were feeding and why they did not provide you with solid diet information.
Again I am so sorry about you loss, but from reading above, I can see it was not your fault at all, so dont feel bad for you did the right thing.

I'm so very sorry for your loss! It's amazing how well gliders can hide their illnesses. I wish I knew what to say to make you feel better, but I don't!!! Have you been to the other vet yet? Just wondering if their results were negative also.

I just found this thread and so I'm late in saying that I'm so so sorry to hear about your baby. It is hard to lose something or someone that you care about. You're in our prayers.
