My sister just called me, her son in-law went by her house and her female glider was lying on the bottom of the cage shaking. He doesn't know anything about gliders, and my sister is an hour away in Vegas. I told him to get her warm, check her for skin tenting and try to get some honey in her, ON THE WAY TO THE vet! They didn't have any gatoraide or pedilite. He said her skin did go down, but not very fast. He kind of paniced, because he is alone and not a glider owner. When I told him to drop everything and rush her to the vet, he misunderstood and took off for Vegas to take her to their regular vet.

She has a joey 3 weeks OOP also. He has the joey with him too.

They should almost be to Vegas now. Is there anything that I could tell them to tell the vet to check?

I'm pulling for you and your family T. off_topic I hate to bring it up but it seems like things are pulled out of the emergency forum to fast. If it's there it gets more attention, once it's out of there people loose interest pretty quickly.

It seems the water bottle had leaked and was empty. My neice (adult and married) said it was full the night before and she had not thought to check it this morning. Thank goodness her hubby decided to run by to check them.

I can not get an answer on their cell phones so maybe they had to turn them off in the vet's office or something.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I'll update when I know something more.

well, atleast they made it to the vet in time. i'm hoping for you.

i ALWAYS had two bottles in my tank because something similar happened to me with my hedgie, they arent quite as sensitive to dehydration though... and just the other day i notices one ofthe bottles in my suggie cage got knocked off so it was a good thing.

Thanks for all your thoughts, I have passed them on to my sister. unfortunately her little girl passed at the vet's office. Their vet was closed and they (2 sister's and my neice) called 15 vets in Vegas before they got one to see her. tant She had a pouch infection, so I don't know if it was that or the empty water bottle the was the cause. I did send the link to "how to feed a joey" to my sister so she has a chance to save the joey. The joey is a little girl 3 weeks OOP. I'll be praying she makes it without her mom. I told my sister to keep the joey with dad and take her out for feedings, is that right?

I'm so sorry. cry Sending lots of prayers their way!

I'm not an expert on this, but I would think that as long as dad is taking good care of her then they should be fine together. Praying that the baby makes it.

I know it's wrong, but I am so upset with my sister right now. She said that when the vet checked her female's pouch it was bright red. How could she have not known? Can you imagine how much pain her momma had to have been in to still be nursing a 3 week old joey? cry poor baby.

So sorry. I would think the pouch infection would be the more likely cause than the empty water bottle, since it was only empty less than 24 hours. Is she doing a necropsy?

Please don't take this wrong...but was she shaking...or seizing? Violent shaking can be a symptom of HLP as well-and as you said she had a nursing joey, which depletes mom's calcium stores further, I wanted to ask. When Riker had HLP he shook hard enough to shake his whole cage (and it's not small..2 ft by 4 ft black PVC coated wire)- but he wasn't having seizures. He didn't lose the use of his back legs, but because he was only about 9 weeks OOP, and growing, they twisted from the deficiency. The shaking is from the muscles shutting down (which will eventually also shut down the heart, resulting in death). He's 4 1/2 now, and it wasn't easy to save him. He still has a funny gait-and always will-and won't fly or jump, and his feet almost slant backwards because of the twist in his back legs. What diet does she use, did mom get extra calcium, and did the vet check for other infections..such as parasite or bacterial, that may have depleted her calcium?

I'm sorry you lost the little mom. Been there. hug2

T, I'm so sorry that the mother didn't make it. Now we need to address the joey that is left behind...

Yes, the joey should be kept with the father and taken out every 2-3 hours for regular feedings around the clock. If your sister has questions about how to feed the joey, please have her call me: 440-953-0904. You can also have her read through my page about Hand Raising A Joey for information on how to do so, how to make formula, amounts to feed for different ages, etc...

After talking to the son-in-law that found her this morning after things had calmed down, I don't think she was seizing, just shaking and he freaked. (understandably, half my family has epilepsy, so anytime anyone is shaking = seizure) They are just taking her home for burial. I have asked that they take dad in for a full check up just to make sure he is fine. Right now everyone is feeling guilty and doing the "what-ifs"

The joey is doing good, my brother-in-law is going to be doing the around the clock feedings, since he is disabled and not able to work. I have emailed them Suz's info and the forum stickie on handfeeding a joey. They said the joey is eating really well. So I have high hopes she will make it.

Thanks again for all your hopes and prayers. I need to go hug my suggies now. hug2
