Ok I have a pair male and female around 2 years old the female is find and active but 2 months ago the boy got an eye infection but after a little bit we healed it up. Now just again it seems to have come back not as worse but this time its like he has paralysis or whatever you call it. He can barely drag himself around... And he does little sneezes alot. I hand feed him some fruit and some mix and he ate it and I attempted to put him into either of his pouches but when I do he tries to come back to me or the girl crabs at him a WHOLE lot. The doctor just said give him antibiotics so that was a waste because we have been doing that. I have him in a shirt folded up in my lap right now... But yea its horrible to watch him just push himself. Its so bad sometimes his lip will catch the ground and just drag it

You need to get this baby to a different vet ASAP! sounds really bad the way you described him, and although we are not vets here and can not tell you what is wrong with him or how to fix him, I do suggest you get him into the nearest vet and have tests ran on him. sounds like a calcium problem number one and other things if he also has an eye infection. Without the proper treatment, this glider can go down quickly. Please do not wait. Please go NOW!

I put him in his pouch with the girl and he can barely move himself so I Dont know if I should leave him in there all wadded up. He cant move himself to much and he is just laying on his back in there looking up while the girl cleans him or whatever she is doing

He needs calcium...give him some yogurt...this baby is going to go down fast without vet care. I'd say you should seperate the two. Put him in a hospital cage so that she doesn't get the infection as well. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I would separate the two of them just in case what he has is contagious, but it doesn't sound as if it is necessarily. You need to call that vet back and insist that he be seen on an emergency basis and if he won't do it find a vet that will. He needs to be seen now and not later. I really agree with Bourbon on this one and it sounds as if the antibiotics have not been doing what you needed them to and now the infection has gone septic. Please get him seen now as there is no time to lose in this case. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers and please keep us updated on what happens.

Well I went to his pouch and he was gone he had crawled out for some reason and must have fallen atleast 2 feet on the the concrete and since he doesnt really have any refelxes could have been on his head or anything. I found him like 3 feet away from there under the stairs. I called all the doctors I could but none could take him and the ones I found were to far away before they left. So now im sitting here holding him and I dont know what to do with him... Every like 5 minutes he does like a little jump or something. I dont know what it is and why he is doing it

That is one reason why he needs to be in a hospital cage...so he doesn't fall out and hurt himself. Is he responsive to anything??

Oh I am so sorry. Where are you located? If you are near me I have a vet list for my area. Can you put him in your shirt to keep him warm? If not a small cage set on a heating pad will work. Make sure the heating pad is on low only. Put some soft fleece in there for him to wrap in. Is he dehydrated? If you arn't sure, gently pinch the shoulder area, if the skin stays up he is dehydrated. Is he awake? If he is able, you can offer pedialyte half strength with water using an eyedropper. A glider will only drink small amounts each time, so 1-2 dropper fulls every few hours is good. I would offer a little fresh yogurt in between. He really need a vet to see him now if possilbe, call your vet back and tell him what is going on, if he is unable to see him ask for a referral to another vet. Please keep us updated. You are in my prayers. Angie

A small hamster cage makes a good hospital cage in a pinch. Just cover the top, back and sides with a blanket to hold in the heat. He will be fine with you, nice and warm and will be able to hear your heartbeat and that will comfort him too. When one of my babies is sick they stay in my shirt where I can see them constantly. Angie

From what I have seen he cant move the front half of his body. And just now he started sneezing me. I have him wrapped in a shirt against my chest. He keeps on trying to push himself out of it and onto my hand and then just tries going somewhere but he cant move enough. He tries to climb into my hand .. but then he started nipping my chest lightly.... And then actually full out biting my figers. And he has NEVER bitten before.

bad, if this glider isn't treated by a vet very very soon, his chances excellent of surving is very slim. You don't have much of a window left to see what happens. Good luck! Chey

My guess is that your little one is trying to tell you by his behavior that he's not doing well. Could you start calling any vet in the phone book and see if they will see sugar gliders on an emergency basis? Or call the vet you have an appointment with tomorrow, and ask if they will see this glider tonight for an emergency? (most vets will, for a price). What Chey has said is very true -- your glider is very ill. Tomorrow may be too late. I don't mean to be overly dramatic, but that's the reality of a very sick glider. There are people who will help you know what to ask for from the vet -- there are vets who will help the vet you see by phone. But you need an accurate diagnosis, and you need it right now. Please don't think we're being hard on you or mean in any way. We're just trying to help this glider, and it's just very important that you find a way to do this tonight, if at all possible. We can help with suggestions, but you need a vet who will do run tests on the glider's poop (fecals), and will prescribe appropriate medication for whatever that reveals, and probably liquid calcium injections and if the glider is dehydrated from not eating/drinking, also give injections for fluids. My prayers are with you and this little one.

He needs to get to a vet asap. like Chey said, the longer you wait the less chance for surviving. Any vet at this point will do, just get him there. Please keep us posted

Well I found a late night vet and we took him there. They were gonna give him antibiotic shots and feed him liquids and stuff through and IV.. They said the problem was an absess on the side of his face which was causing the swelling I just hope it was what was causing the paralysis to so then atleast it means it wasnt due to any other problems. The doctor did say he was experienced with gliders... But something he said rubbed me the wrong way... He was all talking down to me and such and then asked how the little BOY got a bald spot on the top of his head..... Yea I didnt like that to much. But I had no choice better semi help tonight then no help at all. I was supposed to leave him there overnight but I check in every 3 hours

Thanks so much for the update. We will definately keep him in our thoughts and prayers in hopes that he gets much better. Did they do a stool float on him? That is always one of the first things they should do along with blood tests if necessary. Please keep us updated on his condition as we will all be worried about him until we know he is better. We are all pulling for this strong little guy. I can't believe an experienced glider vet did not know that males have bald spots on their heads. What's that all about ?

What kind of experience glider vet doesnt know about bald spots on a males head, But at this point any vet is better than none at all. I would also insist on a fecal float, better to get it all done now and make sure all is well, its only a little bit more money. Happy to hear he is at the vets and please continue updateing us on the progress of your glider!!

well, I am glad he got to the vet. I am wondering if the vet ment Sub-q fluids instead of IV. I have never heard of a glider getting an IV Usually the fluids are injected with a very small fine needle, right under the skin in the shoulder area. He may have ment this, but I am not sure. I am praying for your little guy. Please let us know how he is doing. Sometimes it's clear we may be more experienced then some vets. I am know to give some vets a referral here. Angie

My guess is...the abcess is from some sort of bacterium has gone systemic. Thus the calcium loss. With an abcess...a vet needs to do a C&S befor any med is given. This shotgun method is so....if Rx that is given does not work...the results of the culture are back within a four to five day period. Thus if the first antibiotic did not work...the sensitivity report will say which med will and thus a correction can be made. Cultures cannot be taken if glider is on an antibiotic. They must be done with no meds in the glider's system. Abcesses not treated properly can be deadly. So...anytime there is facial swelling vet care must be sought immediatly for a Culture and Sensitivity(C&S)and if treatment has not shown improvement within a few days then glider must be taken back to the vet ASAP. Once an infection goes systemic it is more difficult to treat due to being in the blood stream which may do damage to other organs. Was a C&S done? What was the antibiotic they put your glider on? And also, did the vet give a shot of calcium to combat the calcium loss? Fluids by sub-q'ing are necessary. Your glider is extremly ill and sounds like he is in critical condition. Sending a along with prayers that your little one be well soon. I have editied my post as now I just read that you left the glider at the clinic and somehow I missed this when I read your thread the first time.
