This morning before work I looked in my glider cage as normal to kiss my babies goodbye on their heads.
First my male,Doodle, then my female, Snicker. Then to my horror, I find that Snickers eye is swelled shut!
Not only that but it looks like her cheek is puffed out, too.
If anyone remembers, a few weeks ago I posted about my male giving orders while I feed them. He HAS to eat first, and when he is done then she can eat, and he would chase her around the cage crabbing at her to go away.
Someone suggested separate feeding stations, which I did, which seemed to be working just fine!!!!??!!
The first few nights I watched them eat, and they didnt bother each other, then when I felt that they were not going to start going after each other, I left them to eat alone again.
Now this morning I see my baby like this?!
I called all the vets in my area. Most of them are closed. All emergency vets I called did not treat sugargliders. I found one that does, but the vet today doesnt. I have to wait until Monday when they are open to just schedule an appointment with someone who can treat her, who knows if that will be on Monday, Tuesday.... whatever?!
Until then is there anything that I can do to help her out, anything at all? I've already bought a small parakeet cage to keep her in during feeding time. When they arent getting fed, they get along just fine, sleep in the same pouch and everything. I would hate to separate them completly because I got Snicker first (about a year and a half ago)from a local pet store where both snicker and doodle were in the same cage to be sold, and the first night she was huddled in a corner by herself, shaking, heartbroken doodle wasnt with her, so we went back the next day and got him. I would hate for the same thing to happen again where she misses him.... augh what should i do?!!
Im sorry if this is incorrect grammar or spelling, I am usually very picky about that but im frantic right now... I dont know what to do with her!

First of all... relax & calm down. She's going to be just fine. You've come to the right place to get the advice you need for getting her the proper veterinary care...

Now, swollen eyes combined with swollen cheeks are usually due to an infection and/or abscess. There are many possible causes, one of which COULD be that her eye got scratched by him but that is not the common scenario, so I wouldn't separate them at this point. Since you've not witnessed any fighting or aggressive behaviors since adding the separate feeding station, it is unlikely to be the cause...

I'd take her to the emergency vet anyway. If she's in pain she can cause more damage and you risk losing the eye frown She'll also need to be on an antibiotic to help prevent infection. There are several people on here who have vets that will do phone consults with other vets should they need help.

Now, what you will need to do for her is to find a vet that can see her first thing in the morning. It won't hurt to wait until morning if she is not showing any other symptoms... I have gone through this multiple times with my Cricky & with my Pika in the past, so let me give you some reassurance on that point...

The vet will need to check the cornea using the retinoscope (small, bright light) and will probably also use fluoroscein to stain the cornea - it will make it easier to see if there is a scratch on it. In addition, the vet may want to lance the swollen cheek if it is, in fact, an abscess. This is good because it allows the abscess to drain and heal faster. Sometimes, the abscess will do this on its own - the drainage hole is called a fistula...

IF the vet does drain it, ask him/her to get a fluid sample of the drainage to send out for a Culture & Sensitivity (C&S). This will determine what the exact type of infection present is and which antibiotic is best suited for eliminating it. It takes a few days to get C&S results so in the meantime, you vet can prescribe a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as Clavamox or SMZ-TMP to be given.

In addition, your vet may also prescribe a topical opthalmic solution to drop into your glider's affected eye.
For now, until you can bring her to the vet's in the morning, there's really not a whole lot you can do for her beyond making sure that she is comfortable and as stress-free as possible - that means leaving her WITH her mate...

Obviously, the first picture is from after the fistula formed and the abscess started to drain. The second one shows the cheek swelling before the fistula drained the abscess...

In addition to the antibiotics and topical opthalmic solution, the vet should prescribe some pain medication. For Cricky & for Pika, my vet prescribed Metacam because it is an anti-inflammatory. However, Metacam can only be used for 3-5 days at a time in order to prevent potential liver damage from it... Other pain meds that may be prescribed are Torb or Rimadyl.

Now, having said all of that: IF SHE APPEARS TO BE IN A LOT OF PAIN AND IS GROOMING HER FACE A LOT, THEN SHE SHOULD BE SEEN BY AN EMERGENCY vet RIGHT AWAY THIS EVENING! That way she can be given an antibiotic and pain meds right away...

Please keep us posted on her progress.
This thread will be moved over to Health & Hygiene in a while, so please take a few minutes (once you have time) to register so you can post updates on her once you've brought her to the vet's.

i kinda just scrolled down and didnt read all of the responses, but you can go to ANY emergency vet. Just because they dont specialize in sugar gliders, doesnt mean the vet will not take care of them. Most emergency vets are good with small animals, and it's no nessesarily a specialty problem, i'm sure its something that happens to many small pets. He can atleast look at it and tell you if it is serious or not.. i would get the poor little girl the a vet.. even some anti biotics can help..also, if the vet there doesnt know what to do, he will call other vets to get help. in my expereince, they will never turn away an animal without atleast looking t it.

Suz has given you excellent advice. One thing I would remember is if you do take him to the e-vet, try to get them to do a C & S (culture and Sensitivity) on the area or of an abcess before you start her on antibiotics. Otherwise, you won't get a good C & S because the antibiotic will mess up the results.

Glad to hear you are headed in the right direction with getting her taken care of. Let us know what the vet says!

Is you vet already in the vet directory here (not sure if the links are back yet)? You should post the info so it can get added and help other glider owners looking for a good vet.

Just to let you guys know, the vet said that her inner eye was scratched somehow (just like I predicted) and gave me an ointment to apply three times a day. Its already the second day of applications and already her eye is looking much better. Thanks for all of your advice and tips!
She does seem to be scratching at it a little bit so if you could give me a link or some information on how to make an e-collar that would be GREAT. Thanks so much again!
Also, the vet said that I should feed her fruit and nectar because that is what they are used to out in the wild. He said that my gliders poop was too hard and the fruit should get it back to normal. Was this correct?

Oh and how would I put this vet on the vet list? He was very kind and gental.
I did have to yell at him once though when he called my baby a "rodent" I hate it when people call her that... grr... but after that he called her a "cutie" and "sweetie"...which I DO have to admit, you could tell she was putting her cute face on,getting as much attention as she could from the vet and all the assistants.... lol
I am proud to say she didnt bite once. Which, I knew she wouldnt but the vet said that "Those are always famous last words" lol
THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!

For instructions on the e-collar go to: How to Make an E-Collar.
In regards to diet, there are many good, proven diets for gliders here in the states. Most of them do have a "nectar" component. Personally, I feed the BML Back to Basics which includes the BML "nectar" (which is also the protein source), fruits and vegetables with insects given for teeth-cleaning. There are other good diets available, too... You can look through the Diet & Nutrition forum to find out more about diets available. Normally, we have a Diet Links page that has links to all of the proven diets, but I think it's not working right now... Sorry...
