Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a pair of breeding leucistics? I know that due to their price tags, most have one leu paired with a leu het, but I don't recall ever seeing a breeding pair of leus.

Just wondering. smile

Haha, I said the same thing. It is outrageous, but she gets lots of money.

Meagan, in general because the leu gene pool is so small, most breeders don't breed 2 leus together wink

As Becki said, most people do not breed 2 Leucistics together because of how closely related they all are. When you breed 2 hets together, you are taking a chance as to whether or not you are going to produce a white baby, but you're widening the gene pool. It's definately worth the gamble.

As my friend Helen would say, I can't wait to see the day where colored gliders are not viewed as cash crops. You say it's outrageous that she has 63 gliders.. but at the same time it's okay because she makes a lot of money?

I'd much rather have 63 altered gliders than 63 intact gliders.. why live off of your animals and add to the potentially unwanted population of gliders?

Being someone who does MOSTLY rescue, it makes me sad that some people only see the money in these guys. Gliders are special critters.. they deserve to be spoiled and loved. When I get money from rehoming a glider, I put it right back into my gliders. smile

Just something to think about.

Exactly! I'll be more than happy to take 2 leus from her, then she'd only have to worry about 61. wink

I'd be happy to take a couple of them too and have them neutered. I'd love to have a white glider someday but won't be spending thousands of dollars on a pet. There are too many out there of all colors, especially the poor grays that that money would provide big cages, tons of toys and good food for. I see more and more grey gliders everyday needing help.

Come to think of it, I've personally never met an abandoned or rescue glider of "color". hmmmmm

One thing that bothers me is people say they don't make any money on breeding when they are selling gliders for thousands each or many hundreds of dollars each.

It doesn't cost a penny more to feed a Leu than it does to feed a gray or WFB or any other color.

Well I have seen colored gliders in rescue lol. I adopted a true buttercream boy from a rescue. Granted I was a newbie and just thought he was "weird" colored until Dancing told me what he was.

It's just a one side of the fence or other debate when it comes down to it. You have to kind of look at the pros and cons in this case. If the gliders are well taken care of pro, if she is not taking care of all joeys born and not garunteeing good homes con. If she is expanding on the sugar glider gene pool pro....if she is inbreeding and making the pool smaller con. A world with EVERY animal completely nuetered or spayed would equal a VERY dull world for us all.

BTW: in a lot of species when there is a specality color like whites and what not it's very rare you get two completely unrelated that you can keep mating.
