I read on a website that sugar gliders can sometimes cause cat scratch fever. I am trying to find that website and cant, but if I do I will make a post...I am still looking. Anyway, I let my glider climb on me because she loves people so much. Her nails are sharp and sometimes they scratch me when she is climbing. The other day all the lymph nodes in one side of my neck bot hard as marbles and enlarged and very painful. I went to the doctor and he asked if I had scratches, and I told him about the glider. He saw the little scratches on my arm and said it was probably from her and that I probably had cat scratch fever. He told me that it was nothing big and the nodes would get better or get really bad and have to be taken out. He said that cat scratch fever is caused by a bacteria under the nails of kittens, and that you cant really get it from older cats, just young ones. I told him my glider was 13 weeks. He said it was not my fault she had the bacteria and that it just happens to any animal (contrary to the belief that only dirty alley cats get it). He also said the only thing to do was to get her nails cut and make sure she does not scratch me because they cant remove the bacteria from her nails and I can keep getting it if she keeps scratching me. The only thing to do is keep them cut, wear long clothes, and hope she outgrows it. Has anyone heard of this happening before? I will keep looking for the site that said gliders can give it. Can someone help me? I love my pet, I like that she likes to sit on my shoulders and such, and I dont want to always have to take her to the vet because thats never fun for them, but my neck is so sore I can not touch it. Anyone have any info?

that's very interesting. I knew you could get it from kittens but I never heard of getting it from gliders. I hope you find the link so you can post it. The glands in my neck swell too and I know how painful it is, but my Dr. said it was caused by fatigue and depression

Yeah I am trying to find out more about it. I just read sometimes you can get it from a dog..I will keep looking for that site. Lol funny when u look for something u never find it. My prob is it is only the glands on 1 side of my neck so the doc said if it was an internal problem they would all be swollen not just 1 side, which makes him think it was the scratch. I'll keep researching. Maybe someone else has an idea or knows something.

Symptoms will last from 1 to 4 weeks. Tylenol will help with the discomfort. Once a person has contacted CSD they do not get it again. A blood test can be done to determine if you do have CSD. CSD I believe is caused from a bacterium named Bartonella.

Kittens who are infected...outgrow it.

Something interesting about the disease...if you take kittens who have the disease....and place them with kittens who do not....the new kittens do not become infected. It seems that fleas are responsible for spreading the bacteria. Fleas bite the infected kittens and then transmit the disease to the healthy kittens.

Myself....I have never heard of gliders being carriers of the illness and this is the first time I have heard of the possibility. Think I would discuss this with a vet and get his openion as to if there is a way to test for it.

In the meantime....keep the nails tipped every two weeks and wear long sleaved clothing and this should eleminate the problem.

I've never heard of gliders with this either. However would be interested to find out more. My six year old nephew got CSF from his baby kitten and thus had to get rid of it. Keep us posted on what you find, thanks.

I'd be interested in reading the website, and finding out where the authors of the website got their information. Can you remember where you read this?

Thanks for all the replies and help. I have not had time to search more for the website, but I did read on one that CSF can be caused in some cases by dogs. Julie, where did you hear you cant get the disease again? My doc said as long as she continues to scratch it she can continue to give me CSF over and over. Now I dont know what. You are right on the backteria. He gave me an antibiotic for CSF I've taken on schedule and it is starting to feel better. I am taking my baby to the vet tomorrow (to cut the nails), I will ask the vet if she has heard of this and let everyone know what she has to say. Thanks again for the help

lol sorry for my spelling errors I typed that way too fast. I just talked to my b/f because once he had cat scratch to see if his dad said if you can get it again. He plays w/ my glider a lot too and gets scratched and hasnt gotten CSF again..so maybe Julie is right. Maybe I just misunderstood the doc or he was mistaken. I'll call him tomorrow.

http://research.ucsb.edu/connect/pro/disease.html
Above is the web site (one) in which I had read about CSF when I was researching my squirrel. This says you can get it from cats, dogs, squirrels, and other sources. Its long..you find the info on CSF between 1/3 and 1/2 of the way down the page. Its a good site though because it tells all about diseases that can be transferred to and from pets. Im still looking for the 1 on the glider specifically, I know I saw it. But If you can get if from ohter animals I dont see why not a glider. What does everyone else think?

Cat Scratch Disease is not a straightforward issue.

When the skin gets broken for any reason, germs enter. About 85% of your blood returns to the heart by way of veins, the other 15% returns via the lymph channels. The lymph channels drain through nodes (some people call glands.)Lymph nodes collect germs, and process them by developing white blood cells and antibodies made specifically to fight that germ. The marble-like swelling you feel is a lymph node plumping up filled with white blood cells that are learning to fight the infection.

Many germs cause lymph nodes to swell. Skin your knee and you will get them in the groin. Get a sore throat and you get them in your neck. Cut your finger and you may get them near the elbow, armpit or neck. A tick frequently causes regional lymph node enlargement in the area where the tick was feeding (and letting germs enter.)

Not all lymph swelling is Bartonella. Other bacteria, viruses and protozoa can cause a clinical picture that resembles Cat Scratch Disease. So many critters, including your little brother, can scratch you and cause lymph node enlargement. It doesn't have to be Bartonella, which it doesn't sound like your Dr. proved anyway. The nodes usually get smaller later as the the white cells migrate out of the nodes and go into your circulation and fight off germs. It might have been glider related.

This is the first time I've ever heard of Cat Scratch Fever, but after reading it seems to be a reality--I thought it was a song.

Schlep. Thanks for the info. I agree, not all causes of swollen lymph nodes are cat scratch. But I did have it swollen in my neck and between the neck and shoulder real bad and her nails were so sharp I had scratches there..so thats why my Doc and I wondered. The main reason I am so concerned is because I keep my glider with me a lot. Its fine for me. However sometimes I am around kids who know now I have her and always ask to see her. I dont know what the "rules" are with gliders, but we have coons and bobcats and such and if they ever bite someone and they complain you will have to kill them. It worries me when I carry her or something. She is so tame and friendly but all it takes is for 1 person to scream loud or anything and her to bite and I dont want to put her down if someone runs screaming she bit them or who knows what. Some people are wierd when it comes to that stuff...you never know. I just want to make sure she can not be giving this. I have to carry her because sometimes I'm gone all day long and I want her to be tame, but like I said it only takes 1 unfortunate incedent for someone to pet her and her climb on them and leave a mark and them go running. Any ideas anyone on what I can do about this? I just took her to the vet. The vet said she is extrememly healthy. Are there any vaccinations they need?

There are no vaccinations, and what you described is a situation that people who take their gliders out in public need to consider. IF your glider bites someone, it is possible they could be put down for tests. You should make sure you know your glider and its behavior, and to limit the glider's exposure to people. It has happened.

I always tell people that they will bite them hard since they don't know them and that usually keep them at a distance. This way they don't try and pet one of my gliders and have it bite them and then have them panic about rabies or something of that nature. I don't let just anyone pet my gliders. This way you don't have to worry about this problem. Your right this is an issue that everyone should worry about though. I never considereed it much until I got prairie dogs and one of them bit a friend of the family as she wouldn't leave him alone. Now I make sure all prairie dogs are caged when people come in as they just don't listen about not picking them up. Prairie dogs do not like strangers in their house let alone them picking them up. I was worried she would report him and I would have to put him down, but she didn't thank God. Then I started thinking that it could happen with the sugar gliders too even though their bites aren't near as bad. So this was a very good point for you to bring up. We always have to keep this in mind when taking our gliders out in public or even having people over to the house and showing them the gliders.
