I've never noticed my glider's nails breaking off.. but they can grow too long from what I understand... do you trim your glider's nails? I use a baby nail clipper and cut off the tips so their nails aren't as sharp and get caught on everything...

I have never had any of the nails on my gliders just break off. They are usually slightly flexible and not hard and brittle.

Are they breaking off because they are brittle?

How close to the 'finger' are they breaking off?

Also, how old are the gliders? I believe some older gliders tend to have thicker nails and maybe that has something to do with it?

wow, I just wrote a reply that was very frantic...I saw nails and read it as tails! you gave me quite a scare there, but maybe I just need to go learn to read.

did the whole nail break off? or just most of it?

kind of sounds like they might have gotten stuck on something because his nails were too long, do you trim them? (like dranger asked)

no, it is not normal in the least. I'd suggest a trip to the vet to rule out any health issues for the nails breaking. A Glider's nails need to be kept trimmed/filed to avoid getting snagged in pouches. What kind of material are your pouches made of?

they broke pretty close to the finger. i think she might have got snagged on something because she had one nail broke on one foot and one on her hand. i felt horrible but it doesnt seem like she was in pain. we ended up clipping off them because they were hanging off a bit and she seemed just fine. she is about 1 year old now. still pretty young. her bag is made out of fleece but she hasnt been sleeping in it. her buddy recently passed and she has been quite upset since then and will only sleep inside her wheel. she is a work in progress but we are trying to find another good buddy for her.

How often do you trim her nails? If her nails get too long, they will get caught in things and then break off... Nails really need to be trimmed every 1-2 weeks (depending on how fast they grow).

Poor baby! I would have her checked to make sure she doesn't have an infection. My two rescues had infected nails and one of the gliders' nails broke completely off. It took about a month to get them cleared up with regualar trimmings.

Infection can set in when a glider is under stress. With her losing her friend and sleeping in the wheel, I would take her to the vet and see about getting her another little friend. In the meantime, spend a alot of time with her. Please let us know how she is doing!

Maybe a silly question, but is the pouch the same one she had with her buddy? If so, I would take it out and give her a new one. smile

yes it is the same pouch. it is my bfs glider and i was going to give him one of mine for her. she stays at my house once in awhile and when she was with my suggies she is just fine and will sleep with them. i think i am going to end up keeping her and he is getting a couple new ones because she likes to be with my sugars

To be honest it's probably stressful to have her with gliders then not. I would say, at least for NOW the time being, I would keep them sepparated if they're not going to be permanently together. Just a thought - I'm not heavily experienced:)
