I have some questions that I'm worried about. My female glider started getting a cold a few days ago. Where the cage was had a cold draft so I moved it to the warmest part of the house. I made sure she was eating and drinking (not the first time they've had colds). Yesterday morning I checked on her and she was acting like maybe she had fell on her head and had a stroke. She was shaking, not moving much, tried to eat but had to rest her head every attempt to bite some food. She died shortly after. I don't know if she might of fell but my main question about her is can she get something from a sick cat like distemper incase the male might have it? We had a kitten in the house we had for a few months and then brought in another from the barn (same litter) that didn't look to good. They ended up getting the door open to come up the stairs near the glider cage. After they got better we took both to the barn. This was a month ago we took them both down. The main one came back for a week and got up near them again and we took her back since she didn't have a cold. I don't know if they got something from the cats or not. The male is now having a runny nose and since the death yesterday has been starting to SM his tail. I am going to put an e-collar on him and keep a close eye and try to get a vet appointment. I don't know how good he is going to do without the female since he is very protective of her, was scared and nervous when I took the female out, been looking all over the cage for her, and usually went to her when he was scared. At the way the end of his tail looks I think he is going to become a serious SM. Also is there a way to bandage the tail that the can't take off with his feet?

Do you have any straws? If so place a staw over his tail until you can get this little guy to a vet. He needs to be seen ASAP!

To answer your question about the cats, the answer is Yes! They can be carriers of toxoplasmosis and this will affect a glider's neurological system, resulting in the types of symptoms that you saw with your female. You need to have your little guy checked for it right away! Here's a link about toxoplasmosis: Toxoplasmosis Fact Sheet

From the descriptions of both the female and the male, I would suspect possible HLP. While those symptoms can be from other things as well. What diet are you feeding? If there is not a proper ratio of calcium in the diet, hind leg paralysis can form. Also, if there is a bacterial or parasitic infection, that can prevent calcium from being absorbed. This little boy needs a vet asap. A fecal float and direct smear needs to be done to check for bacteria and parasites. An xray should be done to check bone density. If the bone density is low, it will show on the xray. Oral calcium needs to be given. If there is a bacterial or parasitic infection, anti biotics are needed. Also, pain management is extremely important, if he hurts, he will chew. At this point, you need to do what ever you have to to prevent him from doing more damage to his tail. Depending on the damage already done, he may need a partial tail amputation. With the given history, a vet is needed immediately.
