On your quest to become licensed, do you have to tell them where your gliders came from? I have adopted 2 mated pairs of gliders. We are planning to keep a few babies and then have the males neutered. But if I decided to become licensed so that we could sell a few babies, would they want to know where the gliders were purchased? What if they were purchased from unlicensed people? Would this create a problem?

I didn't but some have it depends on you inspector. I just wrote down @ picked up in Miami ! at fleamarket. Those were where they really came from but that was all the info I did have on them.

Thanks Cyndie. So they didn't give you any trouble? That's good. Has anyone ever had trouble getting licensed or turned down because of where or who the gliders came from?

when you recieve your license you will get paperwork to keep. There is a record of animals on hand and also a accusation, transfer or disposition record you will need to keep. Each glider that comes in or goes out should be on these records. You can order them from the USDA over the phone and they are usually very quick to get them to you if you need more. Your inspector can answer your questins also, most are just wonderful.
Hope that helps,
Angie

Angie,
what about gliders you already have? Does the USDA need to knoww here they came from, or just ones while youa re licensed/pending?

They do want to know where you got all of them, but I got almost all of mine from unlicensed people and they really don't pay attention to that. My guy said that I could even use my paperwork if I wanted to buy from an unlicensed person. So they really don't check into the people you got them from etc.. unless there is a problem of some sort that needs to be dealth with sort of like the monkeypox scare I had to show where I got all my pd's. This and inbreeding is why they keep track I think. No need to worry about it coming back to the people you got them from unless that USDA agent is a real stickler for the laws, which most aren't that uptight.

Hi,
when you do your pre-license inspection they will ask how many gliders you have. Some inspectors may ask where you got them from, don't worry, just be honest. After that you will have to document where any new gliders came from, you can use the paperwork for any glider, even for rescues, Just document that and where or who they came from, you will have to have the new owner sign the paperwork also if you sell a joey or give one away. A recent rescue was found in an abondoned mobile home, so I just put that info down on the form, I didn't have an owners name. So sad

Only time I have been questioned as to a person being licensed was when I had purchased or sold multi gliders. The inspector then will check to see if that person was licensed. If not licensed...my USDA agent will pay them a visit.

Abs, probably because if you buy say, two females and two un-neutered males...babies will be on the way shortly, and they'd produce far to many joeys for one family to keep, (more than likely), so they'd probably end up selling them. This is probably fine with the nice people with USDA, but only if they are licensed, or will BE getting licensed soon. Course, I could just be talking nonsense. lol. LuvAmes!

what you say makes perfect sense Amy. Thanks dear sometimes I fail to use my...thinking cap? lol

if you give gliders away does USDA charge you>

what exactly do they inspect come first inspection> I keep mine in my room. The entire room or just the cage?

Legally they cant check anywhere else in your house correct?
not that I have anything to hide just my basement is really messy LOL course I wont have babies for another year so I am thinking about just waiting till I am in Missouri to get licensed since Ill be there in little less than a year. Oh I dont know well see.

thanks guys

Oh Good. lol. Sometimes I'm not sure I'm making much sense. HeHee.

My Inspector was pretty thorough actually. She wanted to see my food. I impressed with having fruit in dated ziplock baggies, the BML I was in the middle of at the time was dated when it was made and when it should be retired, if it wasn't gone by then. lol. She wanted to see that my bedding, pouches and blankies were away from possible contamination, of which they were, clean and tucked away in a tote labeled bedding. I also had a tote labeled, extra toys, dry treats and vitamins, and Medical (where I had the Glider First Aid kit supplies, just in case. She checked my cages to see that they were within the size requirements expected, and that they were safe and free of rust. She was very much interested in my contract of veterinarian care, she said that was one of the most important pieces to be sure that I had. She wanted to see my animals (the gliders, lol), and how I interacted with them, (ie, if they were friendly, she knew they were most likely friendly), and she wanted to see that they were bright-eyed and clean and healthy looking (what you could see with the eye anyway). She wanted to see that they were in a nice climate controled place free of drafts and leaking, etc... with running water (that one was pretty easy to handle since they were in my living room) I guess some people have them in a sort of "facility" that might not have some of these luxeries, I dunno... She wanted to be sure they were safe from any predators, or any other pets that could have harmed them. She wanted to check on the cleanliness of the cages, and the quality of their toys (to see if they had enough to keep them entertained, but not too many that they couldn't move at all, and that they weren't overly used or worn out that could cause injury).

Anyway, lol, I could go on... lol. She was very thorough. But I think that's a good thing. Rather than being too lenient. I passed with flying colors, she didn't even have to think about it, haha, so I was very pleased with the whole thing. And I did show her around the rest of the apartment. Legally, yes I believe they CAN check everywhere, because of something to the effect of your quality of living will reflect THEIR quality of living, so they want to see how YOU live, and therefore, that means they can check your habitat as well as the gliders'. lol. She says I can expect up to four surprise visits a year, where they don't give you any warning, they, or she rather, will just "drop by" so you don't have any time to prepare. But since my animals are healthy and my cages are clean and everything stays in tip top shape, I don't think I'm overly worried about those to come. lol.

I'm not sure if the USDA will charge you if you give away gliders. I wouldn't think so, but I do know they like you be licensed, even then, if there are several of these "gifts" other than a one time deal, but I wouldn't think that they can CHARGE YOU if you do this, but of course, as I said, I'm not too sure.

Well anyway Girl, I'm taking Bailey, Kahlua, and the Baby in to the tent for a little bit, so I hope this was clear as well. lol. It's definitely a good idea to wait until you move any way though since you won't have babies yet, AND you'd have to get to know a brand new inspector anyway... Well talk to you soon Girl! LuvAmes...

wow...so how exactly do glider mills get by if USDA is stricter than I thought? I mean CCW is licensed...thats kinda scary.

My mom is a licensed childcare provider and they aren't legally allowed to check the entire facilities, jus where the kids are kept, which I kind of wondered about since both the state and USDA are run by the gov't, so just interesting to know the dynamics being played by the USDA. I am going to wait till I am with Josh to be licensed for a multitude of reasons, and to get a bigger cage...obviously I have too many toys in her cage and josh is building a new and bigger cage so I can get more toys ^_^ because I just love callejean toys ^_^...er, the glider does, LOL.

Thanks ames you haev really helped a lot!!!

Well that was a crazy time. lol. I had been meaning to take the nail clippers in with me, but forgot them, so now my hands and arms look like I've got some serious kind of disease. I've had gliders for five years and I don't think I've ever been this cut up. lol. Ouch!!

ANYway, I don't think that ALL inspectors are that strict. Some aren't at all, and then some, are like mine. It just depends on the inspector. I guess we should be prepared for either end of the spectrum...

But as much as you love your babies and as much as you care that they get the very best care, I don't think you'll have anything to worry about Abs, My Girl. But Good Luck, and don't worry, and let me know how ya do when the time comes, oh... and you're welcome. LuvAmes!
