Since we've had our gliders, we've had cotton rope in their cage, and over time, the gliders have frayed the ends. They love to play in the loose ends at night. Last night I went in to say goodnight (my bedtime routine) while one of the gliders was playing in the rope. He was so excited to see me -- and, in his excitement, ended up with one foot stuck in the frayed threads. Of course then he squirmed even more. I yelled and woke up my son; got scissors and cut the entire clump of frayed stuff off so I could get him out of his cage -- then while my son fed him treats so he would hold still, I slowly cut away the extra fringe until I could finally untangle his foot.

When he was finally loose, and our entire family was calmed down, I put him back in the cage. He immediately went to get a drink of water. While there he shook his foot and then licked/chewed on it -- he did this twice (I'm assuming the foot was asleep) and then went back to bed. I stayed up a little longer and woke him to make sure he was OK and then this morning got him up again. Thankfully there is no lasting problem -- he's not favoring the foot and will allow me to touch it with no problem.

Needless to say, the rope is out of the cage and we'll be looking for a new "toy." I'm just thankful I was right there when it happened.

Thank God you were there to catch this so you could save him or heaven knows what might have happened. It is very important to get anything that has loose threads like that out of the cage as gliders always seem to find a way to get tangled up in them. Whether it's ropes or pouches make sure to check toys and pouches and remove them if they are frayed like this. I am so glad your baby is ok.

Lynn ,
I'm glad to hear nothing worse happened and thank goodness you were there.
I had a similar experience a couple of days ago. I went to take my gliders out for playtime and I noticed one of my girls fighting with something on her foot. It was a long thread of my hair and I removed it immediately. Her foot was irritated but now she's ok.
That's why it's so important to check the cages every night.

Thank goodness that you caught it in time. I hope everything is ok. I own 3 sugargliders and also a parrotlet(smalles parrot). The parrot got her foot caught in her rope toy..did not find out until she chewed 2 of her toes off. She lost a lot of blood and rushed her to emergency vet. She is fine and is very active still moving around We no longer have rope toys in the house

Lynn-I agree about the danger the ends pose. I don't use nylon because I don't want them chewing on something made out of petroleum-and those ends will fray, also. Try this: we put the rope in from one edge on the top, and out the far side, tying knots to hold it outside the cage on both ends. That way they don't get loose frayed ends where they can tangle, but can still play on the rope IN the cage. Then just replace when worn. I get cotton lead rope from the tack supply, comes in different thicknesses and you can buy by the foot. Just a suggestion, though. I'm so glad you were there to avert disaster!
