I cut cup and froze little ice cubes of fresh fruit when I fed the suncoast diet... I worked pretty well It's pre-measured and ready to go

We spend an afternoon and wash and cut up our fruits and veggies and place them in individual ziplocs. Most fruits work great; you just break off a chunk at dinner time. Some veggies will "crystalize" when frozen (radishes/celery especially). We defrost the fruits and veggies in the microwave using the "defrost fruit" setting and stirring every 15-20 seconds.

Next time we freeze our fruits & veggies I plan on freezing nightly servings in snack size ziplocs (1 tbls each of two fruits and two vegetables). My hope is that it will simplify (and speed up) fixing dinner nightly.

I havE found that fresh fruits don't do very well when frozen.. they get really mushy and gross... i have a place i go to that has the best bulk frozen fruits and w/out all the extra syrups and preservatives.. that's what i use...

Walmart has a big bag of frozen fruit and I buy that along with some fresh apples and pears. I grab out what frozen fruit fruit I need, thaw it and cut it up. My guys seem very happy with that and it's easier for me. Just and idea.

so - TMaire has found that freezing the fresh fruits makes them mushy and icky but others don't have this same problem?
I was thinking a/b doing this but I don't wanna give the boys mushy stuff... is there a way to avoid the mushy? does it only happen w/ certain fruits?
thanks!

I've found that when I buy fresh fruit and then try to freeze it, the second I thaw it out it rots. Yuck! I did this papaya (which was pretty expensive by the way) and it rotted the next day! I wouldn't suggest it.

Some fruits do better than others. If it's soft when you put it in, you might have a little more problems than if it's more crisp. I've frozen mango, papaya, cantalope, apples, grapes, pears, with no problems. You pretty much have to see what works for you, at what ripeness. I have started making a slush, and that always freezes nicely!

i also freeze my fruits in little ice cube trays aswell as buy bagged frozen fruits. i find both works great.
when u first start doing this u do want to expreiemnt with what works best. i have found watermelon, banana and anything over ripe doesnt do well.
Freezing is very convenient but there is more to it then that.
2 very good reasons to freeze are;
fruits and vegetables start to multiply bacteria within four hrs of being left out,by using frozen this is decreased for a bit longer. the second advantage is the pre-exisiting bacterias that can be on foods such as listeria and aflo toxins for example. they are not killed by refridgeration but they are killed by freezing.

Thanks everyone, i have tried a few.. the apples do seem to rot once thawed and Kelani won't touch them then.. but she loves frozen grapes and mango... I did go and buy a small bag of frozen fruits and she seems to do ok with that as well..
I guess i might give her to many options per night i tend to give 4-6 types of fruit each night
and 4 types of veggies too.. all in small amounts and she is a little piggy on corn... never have any left the next day.

and last night i gave her seed less watermelon and i noticed she'd go into her kitchen take it and drop it in the bottom of the cage with out eating... is this a sign she really doesn't like it or can't hold it.. she didn't even try the kiwi just left it were it was...

I have never had any luck with freezing certain fruits as well. real soft fruits do not do well with this. We purchase bags of frozen fruit mixtures and then use some fresh fruit as well.
I would say she probably doesn't care for the watermelon much if she dropped it all over the cage. She shouldn't have had any trouble holding it. She must not have cared for the kiwi either. However, that doesn't mean that she won't like it next week LOL THey can be so finicky at times.

I have frozen my fruits and when they thaw out they do turn mushy and nasty looking. My question is can you just put the different fruits and veggies together in the blender and then put in ice cube trays and server it like the BML diet. Or put the fruits and veggies separate? Let me know if anyone thinks this is ok.

Thank you. Now can you tell me how you do it. Do you add water, juice or anything to it? Or do you just blend them with nothing else?

I feed both to my gliders (frozen, frash) they love it either way, never had mine rot though.

BTW, be careful how much corn you feed as it is really high in phosphorus. Oh and I would add juice to my slushies. Good luck!

my gliders wont touch anything thats not fresh. Frozen ones rot too easily and have too much liquid after thawing.. I fix them fresh food every night and one piece of chicken..

OK my problem is that I blended my fruits together and they were really watery. Does anyone put anything in there's to make it like the BML diet? I froze then in ice cubes but when they defrost they are like water.

Cynkatt - My understanding is that aflatoxins are not killed by freezing. Not sure about listeria.

The reason the fruit gets mushy is because when you freeze it the ice crystals cause the cell walls to burst (I learned that from the Good Eats guy on Food Network ). I have a Foodsaver machine, so I store my fruit in a container and use the Foodsaver to vacuum seal it. That helps keep my fruits (and veggies) fresh for a while. I've seen other less expensive products that claim to keep food fresh longer but I've never tried them.

Regards,

Gregg

What I've always done is buy mixed frozen fruit and the fresh "like pears and apples" I buy a few just ripe and many green "not yet ripe" I get real hard pears and they last more than a week in my fridge. Also I buy grapes and cut them up and they freeze real well. Just an idea.

Strange... maybe the papaya was overripe? A lot of times, it is easier to defrost in the fridge. It helps with the temperature shock - like how you are supposed to defrost meat. I personally don't have problems with mushy fruit, but in general, the more "water" fruits and veggies have (celery, watermelon, etc.) the mushier they are going to be. Foods with more starches and sugars don't get so mushy. I never put in food that hasn't been towel dried because the water ices.
