My male glider use to be the tamest little guy. I got him way to young at 5 weeks old, so we bonded on day one. He use to love being held and cuddled and would rather cuddle than run around with his female, who would rather play first and cuddle later. I recently got another male to start another breeding pair. Unfortunately my tame male has now become a machine. All he wants to do is get out of his cage and go on killing sprees. If I hold him, even if I haven't gone near the other male and don't have his scent on me, he starts attacking my hand. I now have about 5 bite marks just from 10 seconds of him on my hand. He also clinches his nails into me so I can't get him off. I figure it is because of the other male and can't do anything about it, but I really want my sweet glider back.

Another problem I have is that he keeps killing his joeys upon coming oop; I think he has some psychological problem when it comes to other gliders-even his own joeys. So, I'm thinking of getting him neutered. I found out his female has one joey in the pouch and don't want another dead joey.

My question is, if I get him neutered will he stop killing everything? Will he calm down or always be like this? Will he calm down enough to take care of a joey without killing it, or should I separate my female from him when the joey is close to coming oop? Will separation be too stressful on the the female and cause her to reject the joey?

Please help, I'm at a lose as to what to do.

First of all, sorry to hear your having such a time with your little guy.

I would have to advise you to make sure you wash your hands and arms extremely well before handling your baby. Male gliders are very territorial and therefore, if they sense at all that they have competition, it brings out the dark side in most.

Now, I have to ask, you said that he keeps killing his joeys before they even come oop? Why do you say that? the reason i ask, is in most cases it is the mother that will cannibalize the joeys if there is something wrong with them or it is stress related and I have never heard of the male actually taking the babys Out of the Pouch before. How many times has this happened?
You may consider getting him nuetered as soon as possible if this is what is taking place.

I am sure others will be along shortly to give some advice.

well I guess the only advice I would have is to have him neutered. If he keeps killing his joeys (how many times has he done this in the past?) I would say to keep the gene pool clean and to stop having innocent lives being killed instantly to get the little guy neutered. this happens a lot, don't think you are the only person who has had a glider kill it's offspring. However this is serious and you as the owner need to put a stop to it, and obviously the best way possible would be to get him neutered. i realize you want to hae joeys and sell them or adopt them out but you also need to take into consideration the health and well being of these joeys that are being hurt.
You are the person in control and nothing that we say will stop you from doing what you want, however please, please do look into your heart and realize what may be best for this glider...and his innocent offspring that keep being hurt.

My gliders have had two sets of jeoys. The first joey was single and was small. She was pulled about a week early from the pouch. I wasn't too worried because I heard this could happen with the first joey, so I let them breed again. The next time my female got pregnant, she had two jeoys for about the first month, then I found the male chewing on something in the corner of the cage and found the female with only one lump in her pouch. The remaining joey lived until the first day oop, He was really big and healthy for about two hours (or until the male woke up). When Paco woke up, the baby was killed. So, I'm not sure if my female pulled out the other two and he killed them, but I do know that he killed the one that came oop on his own. In fact, for the first week oop, the baby was going back in the pouch because my female would push him back in when the male was awake. So it has only happened twice, but I don't want it to happen again. Will it be stressful to separate them when this new joey she's pregnant with comes oop? If I get him neutered will he stop? Can I then keep them together or will he keep the same instincts as before?

As for the washing trick, I do that. I will be attacked regardless. In fact, I was recently attacked badly after coming home from work, so I hadn't touched or been near the other male for a whole night and day, my clothes where scent free, and the other male was sleeping so it wasn't like he was egging on my male. So it doesn't work to just wash up, I do that and he still goes nuts. My female being pregnant is also a stimulant for his anger, I'm sure he's just keeping her safe, but he's never been mean to me before when she was pregnant.

I wish I could get living joeys from him and his mate because he was the tamest glider I had met (even my vet was surprised when he was giving a check up to him and my male just sat calmly in his hand and licked him). But, if I must I'll get him neutered. I was planning on starting to breed wfb when I could find a female for my new male, along with normal colored gliders, but if I must I will stop my normal colored set stop. I would rather have them healthy then stressed and crazy all the time. I just want to know if neutering is a sure way of stopping this insanity?

neutring will obviously take care of no more joeys being eaten and this sounds like it needs to happen at the very least for this problem. The neutering may also help with the other issue as well, but there is no way to know for sure other than to try it. I would neuter him so he couldn't have anymore joeys anyway so they couldn't eat them.

Thanks for the help; I'll see about getting him neutered.

I have another question related to my last ones. Could my males behavior be due to the fact he was sold to me at 5 1/2 weeks old. He was the second glider I got, my first was only 6 1/2 weeks old. I didn't know until he was about 3 months old that gliders should not be weaned before 8 weeks, so I didn't know to say no to the breeder. His female mate I got at 6 weeks old as well. Could this be why they, especially the male, are bad parents? And, overly aggressive to all other gliders?

There's probably not a direct cause for why your glider is doing this. It's probably not that simple. But many of us believe that gliders pulled from their parents too early miss out on things their parents teach them at 5 weeks, 6 week,s 7 weeks, etc. I think they still learn a lot from their parents at least through their twelfth week. I think they learn about being parents as they approach adolescence, even after they're weaned.

But I can't prove that. There's probably not going to be a good, clear answer to why your gliders aren't producing healthy offspring. After a couple of failed attempts, I would neuter him, as has been suggested.
