I have a question...If a male is neutered as a joey (8-10 wks) will he still have the urge to mate? Or is this only an occurrence in males who are neutered after the have matured?

I think what you're asking is the hormone difference such as gelding vs stag in horses. Geldings are typical when neutered before secondary sex characteristics appear, a stag after they 'know what they are' so to speak.

In gliders, it's a little different-they can't be neutered until the testicles descend. You have a better chance at a
'gelding' type if the pom is entirely removed...which is riskier than leaving it on. Removing it removes a secondary source of hormone from the sac itself. Gliders with the empty pom tend to have a smaller bald spot. I've had them neutered young, and leaving the sac is a chance either way the glider may try to mate, while the ones without don't tend to, even when done a little older. If I can clarify, let me know, but hope this helps.

From what I've seen, males neutered before sexual maturity don't seem to have the urge to mate. Also in regards to poms dropping, most joeys poms drop well before people realize, but the testicles don't develop right away. Most young male joeys poms have dropped well before they are weaned, but they are quite small. You can feel them by rubbing their poms between your fingers.

I've had both 4 month oop joeys neutered and also full grown adults. Rarely have I seen any of mine try to mate after neutering but it does happen.

Gliders have three dominant sources of testestron. Their gonads, the sac, and their adrenal glands. Since testestron seems to be the sex hormone, removing both the gonads and the sac reduces those homones most. (as opposed to leaving the sac) The lower the hormone levels, the less likely the glider will have the urge to mate, regardless at what age he is neutered.

Even with that, I still have the poms left on when I have mine neutered.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.
