Does anyone know if making BML with turkey baby food will mess up the diet? I know a few people have posted that their glider likes it better that way and occassionally I have trouble finding the chicken baby food. Too bad the recipe doesn't call for lamb baby food......that one's always there! Anyway, any info will be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, it can't be Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters if you don't follow her recipe exactly. But when I had gliders I fed them a different recipe of Modified Leadbeaters which did call for Chicken, Turkey or Lamb baby food (they are all white meats). I don't know why BML requires only chicken, but in my opinion any white meat would be fine.

According to Bourbon, you should not modify the BML diet in any way, because it then changes the whole diet. Next time you are in the store read the labels and you will see a difference. I know at times its hard to find the ingredients, I had to go to three stores to find the gerber juice, talk about a crazy shopping day.!

If I recall correctly, the turkey baby food does not contain as much protein as the chicken. I'm sure though, if the chicken is not available the turkey is ok to use until you get the chicken....better than no protein at all

I find it actually helps to sneak in a little turkey every once in a while to keep them interested. I've felt a little guilty about it. Glad to see there are some other turkey perpetrators out there.

I checked the label and the turkey is a lot higher in zinc than the chicken but the protein only differs by 2%. So the zinc would be my concern.

I use the Turkey from time to time, but when I do, I try to use 1 jar of Turkey & 1 jar of Chicken...I'm kind of nervous about using both jars turkey, but the rebel in me likes to sneak it in occasionally!

According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, chicken babyfood has about three(3) times as much calcium(Ca) as turkey babyfood and about 30% less phosphorus(P) than turkey baby food. I have not talked to Bourbon specifically about turkey; but strongly suspect that the chicken babyfood was selected for its better Ca:P ratio. In absolute terms, the difference between the chicken and the turkey is not a large one so substituting turkey for chicken in an emergency or as an occasional treat shouldn't be a problem; but I wouldn't make a regular habit of it. If your glider was on the edge of being calcium deficient for some reason, feeding turkey instead of chicken might be enough to push him over the line. If you would like to look at the information, yourself, you can find the data at: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ [/]

I am guilty! Well not of using turkey but of buying all the chicken baby food I have been known to buy it right out from under a moms nose (not really but my buddy said I should leave some for real babies) Mine are real babies!!! I buy it 12 at a time but hey I have 14 gliders that LIKE to eat their BML. you can always ask the store to order you a bunch at a time. That way they know you aren't gong to wipe them out. hehehe
