I have a momma glider that has joeys in the pouch. These joeys are not OOPed yet. They are at the age where they have no hair, but have markings. Where they kind of hang out of the pouch, but go back in when momma starts too run around. About 2 to 3 weeks from OPPing. Anyway...his legs are just hanging there. His tail is not curled, it just hang there. I thought it was dead. I was going to remove it from the tit, but when I grabbed it, the front arms grabbed and wiggled. He is very much alive! Right now I will do nothing until it OOPs. But what if it's not going to get better? Should I have him put down? The other joey is fine. A glider can't live like that or can it? I'm not sure what to do??? What would you guys do?? I need some advice in a big way. BTW there is no signs of bitting or any kind of hurt to it's back.

What ever happens just don't let him/her hurt. That is the thing I couldn't do.

Have you added extra calcium and vitamins to the mothers diet during the pregnacy?? I am wondering about HLP. I dont know if it is or could be a possibility? But like Cyndie said "What ever happens just don't let him/her hurt" I hope all works out for this little joey.

Do you have a vet that you can take them to? I have never heard of such a thing... but it seems like if it was paralized, mom would either reject it or canibalize it. Was this a one time thing? Is it possible he was just half asleep?

First..The diet is good. Lots of healthy things in it. Out of 200 babies born to me I have had almost no birth problems.

Second...Yes I do have a very good vet. You think I can take him at this age?

I would say you should call the vet and ask him what he thinks and let him know whats going on. He may know something about this, otherwise he will at least have a heads up if you do need to take the little joey in. I don't expect you can call him tonight though... so I would just keep a close eye on them and call the vet in the morning.

I have never heard of HLP in a joey... let alone one that isn't even oop yet. My guess is if his back end looks normal (not underdeveloped or anything) and he still acts like this more than just one time, he probably had some form of injury. But like I said, I have never heard of anything like this before. Hopefully someone with some more experience will come along soon.

You might want to try a PM to Chey-she's very knowledgeable when it comes to the joeys. There's not really much you or your vet can do until the baby unattaches and comes OOP, though. I'd wait and keep a close eye on things unless something indicates otherwise. I'm not sure if a vet could even get a look with the joey still IP. Perhaps consult with the vet over the phone so he/she is aware of what your concerns are, and see if there's a way you can bring them in when the OOP day arrives without an appt? Hoping the little one does okay.

Babies who show skin coloration but are slick due to lack of hair are about a week to ten days of coming oop.

My guess is...and this is only my openion...is to have the mother vet checked ASAP for a bacterial problem.

My experience with a bacterial problem...if it goes systemic in a joey...it sometimes will affect the most distal part of the body on a baby joey...thus the tail goes limp. If the legs are limp as well...this joey sounds like he is in trouble and may not survive once he unlatches ....especially if he has a stronger sibling.

So, my suggestion is for a vet check of the mother while the babies are still attached ASAP.

Please let us know how the vet check goes for all.

Thanks, Judie. I didn't even think of that, mind running in the vein of physical problem with joey. It makes sense, though-there are any number of illnesses a human mother can get-like toxoplasmosis-that can cause problems with the baby.
Is there any update yet?

Some way...some how...that joey broke it's lower back. The vet said it had between zero and none chances of making it. My cages are safe, but accidents happen.

It took a few steps to put him to sleep. The vet gassed momma. When she was asleep we got the joey off the tit. Put her back in the cage to wake up. Gassed the joey. After he was a sleep the vet gave him a shot and it was all over.

BTW Momma and both joeys where in good health. He just had that hurt back.

By the way...The other joey in her pouch is doing great! It's a little girl. So the mother (and me) didn't lose all the babies. I still have a little girl a week or so from OOPing. So when I think about the little guy in heaven I then think about the little girl. Knowing she is there puts a smile on my face. Too all that have thought about me and the little angel lost...thanks I'm ok and there is a girl on the way.
