"Clicker" Training #23991

Has anyone ever tried to train their gliders with the "clickers" that people use to train their dogs and other pets? The idea is that you click the clicker, then immediately give them a small treat, so that they learn to associate the clicks with the treat. It's supposed to teach the glider to come to you whenever it hears the clicker.

So has anyone tried this? Any success? Are gliders intelligent enough to understand this, or are they too smart, and will ignore me?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The only problem with this is that the clicker is loud and will probably just scare the gliders. You could try muffling the clicker, though. I have one...if you want we could get a group of people to conduct a "study"

I know there was a new member doing this with their gliders. I am not sure what success they were having with it, but let's hope they are still posting and will see this and let us know how it is going for them.

I taught mine to come to their names by using treats, I used sunflower seeds, before I found out they weren't the best choice. Use any treat they like that you can put in a container and shake to make a specific noise. Call their names and shake the container, they will associate their name with treats and the sound with you calling them. I also, when I first let them out, we didn't have a tent, so I would stand in front of my chair and let them jump to the chair, I would then retrieve them, and do it over and over, gradually letting them go further and further. Eventually, they learned to come back to me, as well as their names. The other thing I did was when it was playtime and they were still asleep, I'd put them in my shirt, and fix their dinner, dropping bits of corn, peas, down to them, to gently wake them up. Then, they'd get their crickets, (again, before I knew about aflatoxins) and start playtime. I would then, put their dinner in the cage before I put them back, that way they had something to look forward to, they were usually pretty hungry by then! This is in addition to the bonding techniques, carrying them in a bonding pouch, etc. Hopefully helping some of you new slaves out!

I've used the clicker but for a different purpose....

Our glider went through a nippy phase, not angrily biting, just think he had a thing for chewing on people.
So I had read somewhere that you can do things such as honk a horn everytime he bites to have him stop. After a while, supposedly, they start to think your skin honks so they stop with the biting.

I didn't much like the idea of a horn so instead I used a clicker.
Funny thing is though, it became a game to him!
He started by nibbling softly then bit a little harder, at which point I would click at him.

After the first couple of times i did this he became curious about the sound. I was amazed when I noticed that he started testing his limits.
He would bite softly then stop and listen for the sound...then he'd bite a bit harder. When I would click the clicker he'd look for what made the sound. When he'd have no luck finding it, he'd go back to my fingers and start the process all over.

I couln't believe he could ever be so smart!

He no longer bites hard, by the way. Now he plays and wrestles with my hands instead! So we no longer use the clicker. So i guess it did work.....but I'm not entirely sure it even had anything to do with it!

As for training them to come to you, I have no idea.
I do know that everytime I walk past the cage he comes hopping to the door for me to take him out.
He also responds to this Pssss Pssss sound I make at him. Kinda like the one you make to attract a cat's attention. He sometimes comes right up to my face when I do that.

Good luck with the training though.
If anyone has any success with this let us know!

Clicker training is from actually operant conditioning. You pair the sound with a treat. Operant conditioning is based on the fact that you reward behavoirs that you want and ignore the bad behavoirs. Clicker or operant training was started many years ago on things such as the dolphins and whales. The most famous trainer is Bob bailey and his chicken Camps.
It is the easiest and I think best way to train almost any animal.
I got involved when I started training my own Service dog. Most places or people now use this for training instead of the old aversive methods of juerking on chains and even worse hitting or squirting liquids or what dog trainers called ear pinching.
It is the most humane way to train any animal.

I was the one who was going to try with the gliders. But I have been so busy working with the service dog, that I never did. You don't need a clicker it is any sound that they pair the treat with. That is why shaking the container of their food makes them come to you. The sound is paired to mean yummies!

This is a form of clicker training. The sound is called a marker, which marks the behaviour you want and then you treat.
i would be willing to do this if others want to share.
I can post more on it if others are interested. Remember you don't need a clicker but the sound has to be the same, it helps the animals to learn faster.
It even works with house training dogs.
Again if others want to try let me know. And I can start by giving the first steps. But only if people want to try.

I've started to try using the clicker, but I could sure use some pointers! Any advice you can give me, Whisper, would be greatly appreciated.

I suppose I use a form of "clicker" training with my kids, only instead of a clicker I shake their bug tub. I even got Sydney to come out of the ceiling when she heard the sound. About the only time they don't come running when they're in my room is if they're tuckered out and have found a spot to snooze in, otherwise they are there as fast as their feet can carry them.

I trained my gliders the old fashioned way. I see them do a desired behavior, say a 1-2 word command, give a treat, then offer a treat and state the command again. If they do the desired behavior, they get the treat, if they don't do what I want, no treat... Only problem now is when I tell Honey "pouch" and she listens, she instantly turns around in her pouch looking for a treat, even though I stopped giving her treats for going in her pouch months ago, lol

Yes awesome that is operant conditioning. That is what clicker training is based on. Instead of the clicker you are using a word. They have come to learn when you have a treat or a talking in a specific way you want them to do something and they will get a treat.

Clicker training is just a new aspect of it by using the same sound to mark the behavoir that is wanted. Then after it is done many times give the behavior a name. and then you no longer need the clicker or marker sound just the word for the behavoir.

To some degree all animals can be taught using the Operant method it has been here a long time, but the clicker is more newer and for many it is easier. For me it seem to depend on the animal. For my birds it is hard to hold the clicker the prop and have a treat very handy.

If you can give me a specific problem you are having I may be able to give some ideas of what to try. I have used the clicker with other animals, including my kids LOL, but not with gliders yet.

But the priciples are all the same. You can either pm me or post here. If you can post the problem here you will get other ideas instead of just one. Which I think is the best way to go.

So ask away if you have come to problem.

I think its great what you are doing.

I guess it's not really a problem I have...I just want the girls to recognize the clicker is associated with a treat and come to me. I've started by clicking the clicker, then immediately giving them both a treat. Is that the right way to do it? Where do I go from here? How long do I need to do it before they "get it"?

Just like all animals, it depends on the individual. Some gliders will catch on right away, others it might take them a while... For the most part, gliders are pretty intelligent. The only problems I've had with training is they can be really stubborn too.

Just like Awesome said each one goes at their own speed. You are doing it right. Try clicking when they are busy playing or running in their wheel. Click and see if they leave what they are doing and come for a treat. If they do this then they know what the click sound means.
Then you can start with something simple.
Gliders like to stand on their back legs at times. So when you are watching if you see one standing on back legs click right away and then give a treat. You can also click when you see them starting to go up that way by the time they are up you have clciked. So now you only click and give a treat when one is on its back legs. Click as soon as you see them going up on their legs. They will learn at some point all they have to do is to stand up and they get a click and treat.

So then you put a word to it such as "stand". So when they go to stand again say the word then click an treat. This would be close to the last step.
Remeber each step takes time but you first need to make sure they understand what the click means. So wait till they are busy and then click to see what happens. If they don't come wait a couple of minutes and try again. Only give a treat if they come when the click goes.

I hope this explains a little better. If you need something more explained or pointed out just let me know and good luck
