I'm about to get a whole bunch of silkworms. I wasn't going to feed them to my gliders. I was just going to raise them for fun. But then the silkworm person told me that he has a few people that feed them to their gliders. The gliders love them. Well...is it ok?? Can gliders eat silkworms?

where did you get them??? THey have green blood! I used to breed them, but they are not for FOOD! I cant imagine them as feeders for gliders. THey are pets. They are born barely visible and grow up to bigger than kingworms! Please dont feed them to the gliders, I dont see how they would like worms that have green blood. Just like earthworms have red blood, these guys feed on leaves only and they resemble caterpillars but with no hair and are snow white.. In asian we call them silk worm babies. They are too adorable to be fed to anything!! And where do you get their food? they only eat mullberry leaves and these trees are deciduous in colorado. Please let me know how you get them .... I raised them as a science project first and then fell in love with them. They are my very very first pets. I had 10 and I ende dup wtih hundreds... and then gave them away to someone who probably sold them as well. I missed themn and have a hard time finding these guys in this country. I'd like to order some for myself, but please do not feed them....

I just realized that these are bred as feeders. It saddens me.. I cant raise them past the summer season cuz the trees will shed all their leaves.. I cant bare to feed them to the gliders either... they are too adorable...

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> [:"magenta"]i think i read about someone who tried to use these as feeders for their sgs. the little worms would look in their direction each time they opened the container the worms were in. it was like the worms were saying "got food?" they finally could not bear anymore, and had to stop feeding them to the sgs. after hearing that cute description, i can see why. however, they are higer in protein, lower in fat, and contain a cancer eating enzyme. we often recommend them for insect eaters. hedgies especially since they are cancer prone.

Well...you see, I wasn't planning to fed them to my SGs. I thought it would be a kick to raise them. I had to order a great deal to get this sale he was haveing. My first shipment will come with 5000 silkworm eggs. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Yes I said 5000 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> When he told me about the SGs loveing them, I thought... "This is away to get rid of too many!" But I'm just not sure if it would be good for them. I think, just to be safe, I'll not feed them the silkworms. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohwell.gif" alt="" />

I am amazed how technology have developed and now they are fed on pellets of mulberry.. well, when I had them I had to go search high & low and get leaves every day.. the last time I had them, was 15 years ago when my grand mother come to visit us from Asia. She smuggled 10 worms in a box cuz she knew how i loved them. they arrived in feb. and there were no leaves around in NY. So they starved in death in a matter of 5 days.. I felt really bad.. every time I see mulberry leaves I dream of seeing silk worm babies on the leaves eating happily...

You'd grow feelings toward them. Mealworms?/ i raise them too and I couldn't care less. They are raised on stale leftover cereal and do pretty well. But silkworms dont have nasty smell, and do raise their heads for food. Their worst enemy are ants. I had a few being bitten by ants and was even carried away by ants. They also molt 4 times in their life, when they molt, they stop eating for a few days and would appear to be liveless. Dont take it as a sign of death or illness. (First time it happened to me, I thought it was sick and cut the worm in half and warpped it in leave trying to heal it. well, I was only 8 at that time!) Of course it died.. after many attempts I finally was successful in rearing them thru the entire lifecycle. One time the moths had eggs, but the ants eat the eggs inside out too. One other time, they never hatched. A way to tell if the eggs are good is that they will change color. When first laid, they are white, then you'd see a dot, and then the eggs turns dark color. After that, they hatch, and are nearly microscopic. Take a soft brush to collect them in a separate box and feed tender mulberry leaves...

I wonder about the kits that they send. ITs just marketing to get your $$.. They are quite a challenge to rear at such young age..they are really tiny and furry and dark. But once they grow a little bigger and with non stop feeding, theyare the easiest thing ever. If you have mulberry tree, you spend $0. Aboslutely $0. when I had them I carried them everywhere with me in a box.. they have a pleasant smell. The fecal matter is dark green unrefined cane sugar size. Very easy to clean. A big bump looking like his head, but it is not.

I think I will get some.. all you need is 10 and a cardboard box or two, so that when you get new leaves, you can just pick them up and put them in the new box. They will eat constnatly, so, always make sure they are leaves in the box at any time..

When it is time for them to spin silk, they will look for corners of the box and start spinning. Some cocoons are shinny, some are matted. Some are goldish yellow color. Those rare cocoons occur one in 50. That is a absolutely beautiful cocoon. When mature, they will spit out a solution and chew thru the cocoon... and the moths will mate and lay eggs. They dont fly. After laying eggs, they will die. The adult moths are creamy white and powdery. They are very easy to handle.. Over all, silk worms are nothing like the name appear to be. They are very adorable creatures that you will find too hard to part with...

I have a small mulbery tree in my backyard.. It is not enough to feed a colony.. but I will get a few.. and perhaps in the winter time I will just order the pellets they have...by then I'd have hundreds of babies. but honestly, you will find it too hard to give them up... I will consider feeding the moths to the suggies however..

thanks for stirring up these memories. My fancy for silk worms are still very strong... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dance.gif" alt="" /> They are too DARN CUTE!!

Good luck!!

LOL Charlie, Yes it was my friend Laura & myself who both stopped feeding silk worms to our <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s. We both fed the silks a special mulberry mash food (not pellets) & this food had to be kept refrigerated.
They had such cute little faces & had tiny little noses & would all rise up & look straight at us when we opened their enclosure - we just couldn't do it!

So if I get over my head I can come to you! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohwell.gif" alt="" />

sure Bitsy.

SO, have you gotten them yet?? I ordered some from herpfood.com.. hopefully they arrive tomorrow. I am very excited! i've been paying a lot of attention to mulberry trees around me and they are quite abundant. I am just concerned about the winter time... I guess I will refridgerate the eggs and save them for next season... Thanks for letting me know that they are now avialble..

Are you feeding them mulberry leaves? just to let you know that there are diff. species of muberry. Some will bear fruit but most do not. SOme are waxy, some are not. They also come in diff. shapes. (2). An experienced eye would be able to tell. You can use the chow but it seems so fuzzy to me. In the summer time they are not hard to raise at all... so long as you have nonstop leaves, you'd be fine.. I think they actually carry a pleasant scent! If you have too many of them and you need to cull, well, you got to do what you go to do. They provide us food & clothing. In Korea, the cocoons are actually deep fried and served as a delicacy..! Yuck!

Good luck ok!!!

yes, we raise them as pets. Every kid in grade school had them from my home country.

Rotten cabbage? You mean Kimchee. Good stuff!!

I've had columbia ants before. They are roasted beetles sprinkled in salt. Very salty!

I think the cocoons are deep fried, salted, and then canned. Maybe there is a pickled version. LOL.

But anyway, when I get my silk worms I am taking them to work with me. I need to keep them fed at all times.... they are such marvelous creatures..!

Hi Charles, I didnt see this post until today.
I am originally from Taiwan. I am much older than most of you, and when iw as in grade school yes every kid had them. I was one of the successful ones that reared at least one full cycle..

I am, like everyone here, an avid animal lover. I have had anything you can think of that you can own under a roof <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yeah, tragedy with my silkworms on the last post.. Ihave 2 suvivors and they are doing fine!! But the leaves dry up too quickly here in NY>. and I have to refresh them 3 times a day..

oh yes, the foods we eat, yeah, we eat almost eveyr thing. But I dont eat the gonads tho.. they are still considered exotics and not everyone is keen on it...
