First get an e collar on Gizmo. Office Max has some clear plastic report covers with material that is about the proper thickness for making e collars.
Second until you can get him to a vet keep the places treated with Neosporene/Pain med.
Third you should put him in a cage by himself. Another glider in the cage with him may irritate the places by grooming them.

Get him to a vet and have a fecal smear and float done. Also have the vet do a check for urinary tract infection. If the tail has been chewed down to the ligaments or bone it may have to be amputated. In case the vet decides amputation is necessary tell him to amputate at a joint and leave enough skin to pull over the end and stitch up. Some vets try to just pull the flesh back over the area and let it scar over but this is not acceptable.

Since the female is not co-operating with him it may be because the female is either too young or too old. Or she could have a problem also. Sexual frustration will at times cause a glider to mutilate. In Gizmo's case I would suggest you consider neutering him. Although frustrating for the glider, he will need to wear the e collar until he is totally healed. This may require you hand feeding him and helping him drink.

There is no real set reason why a glider will mutilate themselves. Its not a hereditary thing, it can happen to any glider. Charlie has given you great advice on what to have your vet do. Here is a link to Ohio vetsthat deal with glider for you to look at and see if you are close to one. Please keep us posted on your little glider.

I know there are other members in your area. TMarie is in Akron. You may want to email or pm her for vet information.

CharlieH and MaryH are 2 of the most knowledgeable people about self mutilation in the glider community. Stay in contact with them - they are gliders' angels and will be a great help!

Everyone is right, my little Pixie did the same thing and I didn't know enough about gliders at that time to knowt that they will continue to chew until they die .........please get Gizmo to a vet ASAP (like now) if there is nerve damage they may have to amputate the tail in order to save his life. But, you will need an e-collar to keep him from pulling out the stictches!! Please don't wait gain-green can set in very quickly!!!
Please continue to let us know how he's doing.
Blessings to you and Gizmo,
Sam

Poor little guy... I can imagine wearing an e-collar is no fun and isnt easy.
Im glad you got one on him... now hopefully he cant do anymore damage to himself and start to heal.
Im sorry I dont know much about how to get one on them and keep it on. Hopefully someone with experience will come in shortly and be able to tell you how to keep it on him.

Best wishes for the little guy...keeping him in my thoughts and prayers.

any vet who deals with small animals will do in this situation.
If this is the base of the tail being chewed i strongly urge u to get the vet to run evry test he can for parasitic and bacterial infections.
If the glider is chewing the tail itself from the tip and working down have the vet check the gliders spine for any possible injuries, the tail if there has ever been injury or calcium deficiencies enough to have depleted bones and caused small hair line fractures, there may be a sensation of pins and needles due to the nerves which is causing the glider to do this. ANother less common but still valuable possibility is allergies. When furred animals have allergies summer time is the worse, they can get 'hot spots' which will be irritated stingy and itchy as heck, they animal will chew and dig at it to no avail. If it were this u would need some prednisone prescribed to get that swelling and inflamation down and an anitbiotic cream and/or pills to get things healing and soothed. This sort of thing will appear more radom and be very very red,its more chewing off the fur then nibbling at the skin. Fur on any hot spots would be/should be shaved by the vet so the soothing creams prescribed can take effect better.
The vet will need to actually amputate any portions of the tail with exposure of raw flesh or bone. An inward stitch can be used on the end and some surgical glue to help reduce the risk of a repeat of chewing which is the biggest risk once the tail is fixed.
The animal should also be put on antibiotics if there is any chance or already occurring infection of the area being chewed. The animal will need to be watched closely in hopes of not needing a little collar to prevent any extra chewing and to be sure the animal is stille eating and drinking. The collar is only used if absolutely necassary due to the stress factors they cause the animals.
i can only hope u are able to track down a vet who has delt with small animals.U will be in my prayers tonight, hang in there.
Cynthia

It is very difficult and frustrating to get the e-collar on to the point that they can not get it back off. The thing is trying and trying again until it is on good. Just when you think you have it on tight enough go a little tighter and that is about where it needs to be. Make sure to watch their nose once it is on to make sure it stays nice and pink and doesn't turn blue. If it turns blue get the e-collar off as it is on too tight. If you need anything you have my phone number as well as I sent it in PM. Don't get too frustrated as everyone goes through this the first few times of getting an e-collar on a glider. Your not alone.
Thank goodness TMarie is close and can physically help and get him to a good vet.
