I have an adult female sugar glide r, she was rollind around in her food dish today ( tropican parrot lifetime pellets ) and i thought she was just playing , then ; later when i saw her doing the same thing i thought she may be itchy . when i took her out ( which is hard to do because she is also viscious ) i noticed her anal opening / cloaca was discoloured posteriorly and there was diarrhea all around and down her tail , i tried to rinse some away with distilled water to get a better look , but htere is definetley a discolouration there looks like fecal matter under the skin in a pocket or something , could be a ruptured colon ( If thats the right word to use for a glider ) im not quite sure . there is a male in with her , but shes the dominant animal in the cage. whats wrong with her . I live in an area nowhere near a exotic animal veterinarian

Can you post were you live, so we can help find a vet for you. Your glider needs to see a vet for some testing. Any vet would do that can run these test.

This glider needs to see a vet asap. Where do you live? We could help you locate a vet in your area. We, however, can not see your glider and are not vets, and so could not diagnose/help.

What area are you in?

you need to get her to a vet... at least an emergency off hours one. where do you live as we mgiht know of a vet near you...

also on a side note.. you might wanna consider switching to a proven diet as parrot pellets aren't glider food.

parrot food is very bad for gliders. look up the bml diet thats the best one out there its called bourbons leadbeaters diet. make that one up asap. along with fruits and mixd frozen veggies. never give bird food. and if u dont have a exotic vet have a regular vet call an exotic vet but this glider must be seen by a vet in order to live. they dehydrate quickly if this lasts more than a day.

windsor ontario is where i live uppon closer inspection the entire area aroud cloaca is swollen, posterior to that the lateral tail base area extending to the cloaca looks like necrotic tissue. could it be that she was giving birth and the baby died? what are symptoms of a sugar glider giving birth?

When a glider gives birth, it does not generally cause swelling or anything of the sort. The joey is very tiny when it crawls into the pouch, and the birth itself is rather uneventful.

Has she been chewing on the area at all? Is she making any strange noises?

Here is a link to vets in canada. There are three vets in Ontario registered with us that deal with gliders. Please call and get a appointment with a vet. We can not tell you what it is as we are not vets and can not see your glider. For the sake of your gliders health, please review the vet list and get her to the vet.

I agree with everyone about the urgency in seeing a vet, tonite if possible, or first thing in the morning. But in the meantime, check and see if she's dehydrated. Pinch the skin on her back near the neck. See if it goes back to normal or stays "tented." If it doesn't go back down, she needs extra fluids tonight. Try Gliderade if you have it. Other options include Pedialyte (what you give to babies if they have diarrhea) or watered down juice. You may need to give her fluids regularly during the night.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Lynn

Unfortunately tomorrow is a Canadian holiday and no vets around here are open besides the two 24hr clinics ( i called both and none of the DVM's have glider experience or knowledge ). I wont be able to bring her across the border at all due to international customs and regulations . So i hope shell keep till tuesday , i have her in a warm area on top of a clean towel , i gave her some pedialyte.
I really hope she'll make it shes a fiesty one so shes got a running chance . i will put an update on tomorrow morning thanks for all the advice.
P.S. the parrot food is only in there as somethign to munch on , i feed them a 10 fruit mix ( ice cube ) every other day , hard boiled egg every third day , apples , carrots , and giant meal worms , organic strawberries as well.

I was told by several people that ZuPreem Avian Maintenance Natural was a good staple food to keep in their cages as a snack they can go to throughout the day; Is this not something I should be feeding my gliders either?

I don't now the nutritional fact on this, but this is designed for parrots not gliders. There are other staple foods out there that are specifically made for gliders you might want to check out. I may be wrong and please correct me if I am, but at the very least it shouldn't be used as a source for a main diet.

I'm so sorry to hear of Oprah's passing. It may be wise to take her body to a vet for a necropsy, especially if you have other gliders -- just to be sure she didn't have anything that could be transmitted to your other gliders.

Once again, I'm sorry she didn't make it.

honestly i wouldn't feed it but i'm not sure if it's okay or not.. what i do know is that it probably shouldn't be fed alone and also isn't a part of a proven diet that i know of...

i am so sorry she passed away... you are in my thoughts.
