Sorry for the delay in posting an update on Nicky but with caring for him 24/7 and driving to Virginia for the SGGA and to transfer Nicky to Mary, time constraints kep me from getting on to post about Nicky until today.

Took Nicky to my vet last Tuesday and it was noted that he had approx. 1/4 inch of tail bone exposed due to chewing his tail. The vet advised that Nicky must be in a lot of pain because of the bone being exposed. There was also a lot of swelling along with infection/drainage in what was left of the tail. As Nicky laid on his back in Dr. T's hand, he never once crabbed while Dr. T probed the damaged tail. Dr. T was extremely surprised at how calm and sweet Nicky was. Because of the infection and swelling in what remained of the tail, it was felt that the infection & swelling needed to be addressed prior to any surgical procedure on the tail. Nicky was, therefore, put on Baytril and MetaCam ( non-steriodal anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling). A direct fecal smear was also done showing two trichomonas organisms to be present. However, with Nicky's other medical needs being more critical, Dr. T felt that this issue could be addressed by Mary's vet August 2nd (today) via repeat fecal testing/medication as warranted.

Good News: as for the cloacal area, while it was swollen and red, Nicky has done no actual damage to it nor has he done any damage to the scrotal sac.

All in all, Dr. T was amazed that Nicky was generally healthy and provided a Health Certificate for Nicky so Mary could transport Nicky via airline back to Houston, Texas.

To boost Nicky's immune system and help in wound healing, Nicky has been placed on straight BML for the next two weeks with no objections from Nicky. He ate almost 2 full tablespoons of the BML mix the first night with me. He did fine overnight. However, on Tuesday morning, he did go into the SM mode but I was able to distract him from the SM behavior by placing him in a bonding pouch & carrying him around with me 24/7. This made it interesting in terms of trying to pack up my other gliders, their cages, etc. in order to be ready to leave for the SGGA on Wednesday morning. However, if I tried to put Nicky back in his cage for even a few minutes, he would begin his SM activities and only stop when I placed him back in the bonding pouch around my neck. Then he'd go to sleep for me. Told Nicky he sure knew how to get attention effectively and he chattered to me as though saying: "You're darn right, I know how to get attention".

Nicky did have one small SM episode on the drive to Virgina but I moved the pouch closer to my heart so he could hear the rhythmic beating of my heart. I also began humming to him and stroking the pouch. Nicky went to sleep and remained alseep until our arrival at Marie's that night. A check of his mutilated tail showed scab formation was beginning, the swelling in the tail was lessening and there was no further drainage noted in the tail area indicating the medications were having the desired effect.

Bourbon got to Marie's a couple of hours after I did and checked Nicky out. Since we were able to distract Nicky fairly easily from his SM behavior, it was decided to hold on applying an e-collar until Mary got there with her e-collar supplies so as to minimize any additional stress on Nicky. However, during the night, Nicky began his SM behavior again necessitating the placement of an e-collar by Bourbon. After placing the e-collar on Nicky, we learned something interesting. SM gliders will fight tooth & nail to keep from having an e-collar applied but Nicky did not fight it leading us to believe Nicky has been in an e-collar previously for SM behavior and that the person whom Nicky was given to in Syracuse, NY had no inkling of this & was caught totally offguard when Nicky began his SM behavior within a few days of her getting him. We can only thank Nicky's second owner for caring enough to contact Bourbon when she did to get help for Nicky's sake. Since placement of the e-collar on Thursday morning, Nicky has been doing well and his mutilated tail is beginning to heal.

MaryH arrived at the SGGA on Friday and has taken over care of Nicky. She has Nicky under her shirt 24/7 and seems to adore his sweet, gentle nature. Mary took the e-collar off Nicky Saturday so he could eat his BML and get an extra treat of scrambled egg and 2 mealies Saturday evening. Nicky was in heaven.

Sunday morning (August 1st) - MaryH left to fly home with Nicky via Continental Airlines. Her vet will see him today (August 2nd) and hopefully, MaryH will update us on Nicky's progress from time to time.

I must say that I have a new appreciation for what Mary does in terms of caring for SM gliders. I only had Nicky in my care for three days and quickly learned what a commitment it is to care for such a glider. I think I did O.K. and amazingly, Nicky seemed to trust me without reservation during that time. But even though I would have loved to keep Nicky, I knew I could not provide the 24/7 care so desparately needed for this little guy to survive and hopefully overcome his SM behavior. Only someone as dedicated, caring and loving as MaryH can provide the love and support Nicky will need in the coming days, weeks and months. So while I miss you Nicky, I know you are in the best of possible hands with MaryH: one of God's special glider angel protectors.

I've been wondering but knew everyone was so busy with the care of Nicky and the SGGA. Thanks for the update, it's so heartwarming to know so many people care about this little guy.

The only thing I can add to this thread, is never having seen a SM first hand until this past weekend and seeing MaryH with Nikki and Cory with Teddy, the love and commitment with these guys is definelty a 24 hour a day deal. The way that Mary walked around just loving on Nikki while he was under her shirt or to watch her talk with him and give him kisses on his nose was one of the most heartfelt moments for me. To watch Cory's emotions get the best of him by just talking about Teddy brought me to tears myself a couple of times. I applaud all of those that are willing to make that long journey when it comes to taking care of one of these precious little ones.

Spoke with Mary just now. She & Charlie are getting Nicky ready to go to the vet. She has a couple of pics she took of Nicky & hopefully they will get posted shortly for people to see what the little guy looks like. After a rough time with folks at Continental Airlines regarding the size of the container Nicky was in being too large, a supervisor that Mary describes as looking like a drill sergeant came forward to talk to Mary. Once Mary explained Nicky's special circumstances, this supervisor did something unusual: she allowed Mary to bring Nicky into the airline cabin rather than going into the pressurized/temperature-controlled cargo bay per Continental's normal rules and told Mary to keep up the good work of rescuing these little guys. Seems the Man upstairs was also watching over Mary and Nicky yesterday as Reagan Airport shut down flights to/from the airport (not exactly sure of details as to why) within minutes of their flight taking off.

Mary has promised to give Nicky a kiss on the nose for me and hopes to get on the board later today to provide an update as to what transpires at the vet's with respect to Nicky. Let's all say a little prayer for Nicky so things go well for him at the vet's and that today will be the start of a new beginning for this special little glider.

Special doesn't even begin to describe this lil guy. Seeing a mutilator up close and personal for the first time this weekend, is not only shocking and heartbreaking, it's inspiring. To all those involved in Nicky's survival, you are angels from Heaven. Watching Mary talk to Nicky, and Nicky's focus on her, was nothing short of complete awe.
Keep us posted Mary.

GliderRoo, flights were delayed due to thunderstorms in and around the flight zone or something like that. My flight back to Tx was delayed almost2 hours...

I echo what Karin posted. Nobody can fully understand what a SM is all about until you see it for yourself first hand. To watch Mary was incredible, and I applaud the guy at the airport. However, my guess would have to be that Mary told him if Nikki couldnt fly in the cabin with her she was going to be flying in cargo with him!!! And you know what, if that is what it took, being the person that Mary has shown herself to be, that is EXACTLY what she would have done.
Keep us posted Mary. Glad you made it home safe.

Go Mary I've always wanted to fly cargo I can't imagine the dedication it would take to take care of an SM. ...right now I can't tell you much. We went to the vet and Niki
is in surgery. They are also doing a fecal and running some other tests. We came on home and Dr. Fronefield said we could
pick him up between 5 and 6. It will be early evening before
I can tell you the results...and I will as soon as I get back fron the vets office.
At this point I would like to say he is the most beautiful
and most special little angel I have ever laid eyes on. But
if I did...Charlie would just come back and say I tell them all that...:) I'm still gonna say it anyway...:)
As wonderfull and exciting as it was for me to be lucky
enough to attend the SGGA...please don't be mad at me for
saying...Niki was the icing on the cake for me. There are
just no words for me to tell ya'll what it does for my heart
when I am so lucky to get another glider with health issues
in that needs my help. I'd lay my life down in a heart beat
if it would stop another glider from being sick...but it
won't. So I just love it when I can tell them...I'll make
it better, I promise.
Glideroo...your the angel on this round. If it weren't for
you Niki wouldn't be a Texan now. I need to find him a
cowboy hat to wear when we burn the e collar and giggle.
As soon as we get him home this afternoon I will be back to
tell ya'll everything.

Mary

We picked Nicky up from the vets at about 5:45. He removed the part of the bone that was showing and had to cut away more of the skin than I like for them to. It had deterioated to the point there was no saving it. But he pulled the tissue around the open end of the tail and sticthed it for cover. When they do not have enough skin to work with it leaves a place that is a large scar. Not at all to my liking but the has to work with what is there. When we picked Nicky up he was out from under the gas and starting to feel the pain from the operation. We gave him some metacam to ease the pain. Guess Mary will be up watching him most of the night. I am attaching a picture of him before the trip to the vet. After about a week I will post another pic to let you see the change.

Thanks again to everyone for their help and to all of you who are pulling for little Nicky's speedy recovery. He is a real sweetie.

im so glad to have met little niki and mary and if everyone could carry around a little can and collect whatever someone can contribute and give it to mary so she could help even more sm's that would be great and thats what i'll continue to do for u mary. is wherever i go i have in my car a container and will ask whoever i feel will give to contribute even a few quarters it will add up and then u can send a ck. to mary for the vet bills. maybe then if everyone on this board does this. maybe then she can have many more gliders flown first class right to mary and not have to worry about the railroad.

Oh that poor baby!! I am so glad he is in good hands and will get better. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers from this day on. He sounds like such a sweetheart and I hate that he is going through all this. I hate to see any glider go through this. Thanks to Glideroo and Mary this glider will have a much longer and happier life.

Charlie: reviewing the photo of Niki's tail, it's easy to see why the vet had to cut away more tissue than you had hoped. Appears the chewing and infection caused tissue necrosis (death of tissue) necessitating cutting it away until healthy tissue was reached. However, in the photo, I also noted that the cloacal area looks much better. On Thursday morning, the entire cloacal area was reddened/swollen. In today's photo, the swelling appears to have lessened and almost half of the cloacal tissue is a healthy pink color again. This is good as it indicates that no serious damage appears to have been done to the area.

I am so happy for Niki. It seems that a Conspiracy of Love existed with respect to his rescue:

1) having DougV come on in the later afternoon to advise he could help in terms of Niki's transfer from his owner to me.

2) the fact that my vet charged very little for Niki's exam, fecal testing, medications (Baytril & MetaCam) and for the Health Certificate needed to fly him from Virginia to Texas.

3) The Continental supervisor who waived their rule & allowed Mary to bring Niki into the airplane cabin when the traveling containers were deemed not acceptable.

4) Bourbon's being at Marie's when Niki started SMing so she could get an improvised e-collar on him.

5) and most of all, Mary & you for the willinging to take yet one more special glider into your hearts and home without any hesitation. 'Tis no easy task to do what you and Mary do with respect to SM gliders but you do it with grace, patience, courage, lots of love & hope that each one of these gliders will not only survive but go on to have happy/quality lives. May God bless you for what you do as you two are truly glider guardian angels.

P.S.: Look forward to seeing the updated photo of Niki's tail area. And don't forget to give him a kiss from me or to call me if you need anything for Niki. Having cared for him for three days, I truly came to love this sweet gentle little one and he will always have a special place in my heart.

oh my gosh, i scrolled down the picture to see the poor babies tail...then i realized he had no tail! i can not imagine! other than health concerns, which are first and foremost, obviously....how will having little or no tail affect him-or any other glider?

Not having a tail does not seem to affect caged gliders. If he was in the wild or in an area where he could glide it would be a problem as they use their tail as a rudder or to carry things. We have other gliders with docked tails and it does not seem to bother them in the least.

Some way Nicky managed to pull the stitches out of his tail and open the wound. Mary noticed small spots of blood on the fleece in the floor of his cage yesterday morning. We put medication on him and today he went back to the vets. They put new stitches in the tail. I also had them do another fecal on him and it showed negative. Hopefully this time the tail will heal properly. We still have him in the e collar but he probably rubbed the stitches against the cage or one of his toys. He is a funny little guy. When we went to pick him up at the vets he was eating on a slice of apple we had left in his cage. This morning I trimmed his nails. Probably first time for him. You would think I was cutting his toes off the way he acted. Then about a minute after I was through he was back to his happy little self. At this time I don't think we are going to have a problem with him trying to mutilate once the tail is healed. We are anxious for him to get over the problem with the tail so we can have him neutered. Then we are going to find a little female cagemate for him.

Thanks for updating us on Nicky. Hope his surgical site heals quickly. As for nail trimming, Bourbon did trim the nails on his back feet July 29th but not the nails on his front feet. Please give Nicky a kiss from me & let me know if you or Mary need anything for Nicky.

You know as bad as it gets with these guys I really am thankful for the time I had with Teddy and to see Mary looking in to Nicky's eyes makes me want to cry just remembering it. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to come back as one of Mary's gliders in my next life. lol

I'm ok I get to see him Friday. That is the good part we are only 2 hrs apart. Just shocks me how fast they grow on ya. I wouldn't have ever believed it if I didn't see it first hand. i don't know How Mary does it. You really do give your self to them. First thing to go is the heart. Then they got you hook line and sinker!

Charlie/Mary: how's Nicky doing since the vet redid the stitches? I think about him every day as I fell in love with Nicky during the brief time I spent with him.

Nicky is not doing as well as we had hoped. He fights the e collar constantly. Plus he is not eating as well as he should. Can't wait to get the e collar off. He does not like to eat anything offered by hand except pecans. We are constantly concerned about him eating enough and staying hydrated.

Today we put a smaller e coller on him that is made from a stiffer material. It seems to help with the eating but he still fights it. He is a lot more mobile so maybe tonight will be better for him.

keep working with him time will heal him. i think it'll take him a while to get used to the e collar. some heal quicker than other just like people. im glad he's with u if he werent he would probably fare worse.

Charlie: Thanks for the update. Am so sad things are not going as well as you & Mary had hoped. Little Nicky will continue to be in my prayers and we can only hope that with time, love, patience and lots of attention, he will succeed in his battle against SM. Give Nicky a kiss from me & tell him I'm rooting for him.
