I dont know if anyone remembers, but my glider Kuzco has gotten lumpy jaw about 3-4 times now. (first couple of times i was using briskys along with fruits, veggies, mealworms, etc-couple times after that...its not the diet thats causing it, because theyre now on exotic nutrition)Every time we put him on the same meds the Dr. tells us to, and it goes away but comes back a couple months later. Well, this last time, it was REALLY big, and there was an open sore on the outside, I took him to the vet the next day and the Dr. said to continue the meds and if i wanted and would pay for, he'd do exploratory surgery on him, to open it up and see what keeps causing the infections(he wanted me to continue meds so it'd go down by the time surgery had to be done, which it did). The reason this time it was an open sore was because it was trying to find a way to drain. Anyhow, Kuzco underwent surgery on Monday July 26th. The dr. took a culture and a biopsy and sent both in...they said the culture should be back within 2-5 days and the biopsy I believe about 2 weeks...The wait is awful, and its now been 6 days, and no results. Kuzco was doing very well after surgery, he was on pain meds and was eating, drinking and playing just like normal. Well...I was cleaning out their cage today and noticed hes a little swollen...enough that his left side has a bump on it again, and underneath is swollen pretty bad... This has been an ongoing battle with him and I just dont know what to do. The dr. said when he got the biopsy of the tissue and bone of the jaw...on his left side it was a little soft and thats not good...he said it could be an infection in the bone...or... cancer...thats why were waiting on the biopsy. Im taking Kuzco back to the vets today to see why hes swollen and if its infected and what needs to be done to treat it...Its just such a roller coaster with him, and i just dont know what there is to do I already paid $400 for his surgery (plus all the other times I had to take him in because it kept coming back)and god knows what else once the biopsy gets back...I guess I just wanted to post to see if maybe someone else has had this happen before, or maybe anyone has any thoughts on what it could be...I will update after i get back from the vets this evening...

Did the vet do a culture the first time? sounds to be like the meds aren't working, for it to keep reoccuring. Sending hugs and well wishes Jen, this time everything goes ok.
Can you PM which vet you are using?

thank you charlesex...he actually came with the name, I think its cute too, he was a rescue to me...Poor baby...

Karin...well thats just the problem, he didnt do a culture the very first time...and I asked him a couple times ago about a culture...but he just told me to use the same meds...which seemed to work just fine...but I guess it does make sense that its a problem if it keeps coming back. Anyway...I went in today, I didnt get to see my normal Dr. I take them to midwest bird and exotic..Im sure you know of it...you might even take yours there... But today I got a diff Dr...and one that im not even very comfortable with. kuzco usually sees Dr. Nye..and I like him, he seems very knowledgable, and he makes me feel at ease. this woman did not. And she didnt seem to know much about much...but she actually brought Kuzco to see Dr. Nye to get his opinion. Kuzco weighed 86 grams when he went in for surgery on monday and hes now down to 72 which isnt good. She said to maybe even get him back on Ensure for a couple days...Right now im feeding priscillas exotic diet, and they dont seem to eat it all everyday. They eat most of the fruits and veggies, but sometimes dont touch the frozen stuff. Anyhow, she also said he looked a little pale...and she feels it could be because of the surgery, stress...and just him losing weight...she said something about him being anemic? How would she know that? I dunno, I just feel very confused, and I feel like it was a waste of time at the vets today...as long as they said its not infected...I guess that helps...she said it could even be a tumor, we just dont know yet because the darned tests havent come back yet! Im just so frustrated...and I feel like I keep paying to see these dr's and...nothing seems to come of it...she also said 'the tests arent in, but you might wanna keep bugging and calling Dr. Nye so he can call them and see whats going on with the tests' Does that sound right at all? Shouldnt he be doing that already??? karin...where do you take your gliders? Sorry if I seem a little nuts right now, lol but actually, im going a little crazy, so just bare with me...

Jen, Dr. Nye (from all I have heard), is a good vet. They are a tad slow there getting back to you though. I go to Dr. Ness in Lisle, he was once with Midwest, but now is on his own. He is outstanding, and I am sure would give you a call if you call him. (He once did a house call here for a rescue that I felt would be too stressed to take to the office.) If you feel you need a shoulder or ANY help, contact me and we can get together. I mean it, these times can be really tough.

Jen, usually a vet is able to tell if an animal is anemic by looking at their gums. They tend to turn pale if there's low iron. The only food I know of that's particularly high in iron is red meat (someone please add if they know of something else). My gliders occasionally get a small piece of roast done in the crock pot (no seasoning-and it comes out more tender for them). If he is anemic, there may be something the vet can give you to help, like a mild liquid supplement, until it's gone-I wouldn't let it continue too long if he is anemic. Anemia can also cause fatigue and lethargy (basically, you just don't feel up to doing anything-I've had it myself).
Also, stressful events can deplete the natural, good bacteria in the stomach and intestines. Make sure and give him yogurt daily to replenish it.
I wouldn't feed him anything that is hard or difficult to chew right now, either. If he'll drink ensure as a staple, I'd do that until his jaw heals, at least, and then a staple like zookeepers that is soft, if you feel it necessary to change. Keep all of his fruits/veggies soft and easy to eat, nothing chewy he has to work at. Try steaming the frozen veggies and serving them when they cool. You can store about 3 days worth in the fridge. Since he may not be getting all his vitamins if he isn't eating well, the ensure will take care of most of that. You will need to add calcium without D3 to it to meet his needs (look at the diets-it's Darcy's diet and I can't remember offhand how much to add per bottle/can).
Hope this helps some, and keep us updated on his progress.
Okay, it's 3/8 tsp. of the Jurassical calcium(my husband usually does it, and I couldn't remember how much). No D3 in the calcium because the ensure already has it. Give 1 Tbsp per glider daily.

thank you xfilefan...well this is whats going on as we speak...I went to get pedialyte, gave him some, he puked up a little and some yogurt as well. I gave him a rest after giving him 1 1/2 cc's of pedialyte. Then I tried again...another 1/2 almost...and then he puked all that up....so I ran to the phone and called the Dr. Karin suggested. He said to give him some more of his pain meds (he had been off of them for a couple days now) that the swelling is prob causing pain and its hard to keep food down...(or pedialyte in this case) and then try giving pedialyte mixed with water afterwards. So I gave him his meds...and then...a couple mins later..handing him a grape and ever since hes been eating it with full force. Right now, hes laying in my shirt on his back cleaning himself. He seems like hes feeling better...but I know were not out just yet. I will def get the ensure going, and when they were on the ensure diet I used to mix it with calcium tablets. (TUMS) would you suggest I separate him for the night? their cage is 5 ft tall..and since he seems a little weak...I wouldnt want him falling...do you t hink this is needed?

You say they're on exotic nutrition- that site offers many diets. Is he on a hard pelleted one? If so that might be causing the lumpy jaw.

I would suggest switching him to a soft food. Leadbeaters variations might still be too hard for him because of the wheat germ, so I would consider Darcy's diet instead. Something that doesn't require chewing. His fruits and veggies should be blended so he doesn't have to chew. I can imagine it's very painful for him to eat right now.

Jen, if he is still acting weak, and not himself, try to seperate him for the night, leaving the glider cages right next to each other. Watch for stress though, but better safe than sorry. How is he doing now?

Mage, that's a good idea-blending things-if he'll eat it that way (some won't)-or switch to babyfood for a while if he'll go for it: could even put some fresh cooked meat in the blender with a little water if he'll eat it that way to get his iron up.
Jen-If he is having trouble moving/gripping I'd definitely put him in a smaller cage, to prevent possible injury. Or, if your cage isn't too wide (say 2 feet or so) you can turn it on it's side instead. Keep his sleeping pouch near the floor, or if he has a nestbox that can be put ON the floor, use that. When Riker was in an e-collar, I also hung a hammock so if he did fall he'd land on the hammock or be able to catch it. My first I made myself from scrap fleece and pouch hooks just stuck through the corners (both from Walmart).
Is he throwing up anything else? It could be that 1 1/2 ccs was just too much for his tummy at once, especially if he hasn't been eating well lately. Their stomachs are tiny-think the size of their fist or so, and can shrink if they aren't eating. Maybe try again in a few hours, give his tummy time to settle down, and go with about .3 ccs every couple hours, and make sure its 50/50 with water. On the other hand, many antibiotics can cause vomiting. If he is throwing anything else up, stop the antibiotic and call your vet-that can get serious in a hurry.
As for the tums, I have heard of others doing that, personally, I wouldn't for any length of time (just my opinion). They have other ingredients besides the calcium that I don't think would be good in a glider's system long term, esp. one already ill. Unflavored or fruit flavor would be okay temporarily until you can get some calcium, no phos, no D3. Mint and catnip are in the same family, and catnip is a no-no.
You can also feed him foods high in water content (Grapes are great, by the way ) to help keep him hydrated. Other good ones are watermelon, canteloupe, honeydew, babyfoods (which are blended with water for consistency).
Let me know if I can help with anything else! Your little guy is in my prayers!

JenJen: You both are in my thoughts and prayers. He has to feel how much you love him for all that you are doing for him right now. I know this must really be taking a toll on you, but know that you are doing all you can for him.
Are you going to be taking him in to Karins vet? or are you going to continue with yours? A second or even third opinion may be good right now. Animals just like humans can become immuned to antibiotics if repeatedly used and therefore will not do any good. Maybe that is the problem and why it isnt working?

How is he doing now?

If he's throwing up tonight, the most important thing is to keep him hydrated with whatever he will drink. Nectar, ensure, BML, apple juice, pedialyte, just whatever. Remember that gliders that are ill also need extra calcium, so when you contact the vet in the morning, ask about neocalglucum and check for dehydration (consider sub q injections if necessary). This will give your little guy a fighting chance while they figure out what's going on.

Dr. Nye has a great reputation. I'm sure he's doing what he can think of to do. I hope he's also willing to contact other vets who have experience with this.

My vet told me once that sometimes when they don't know what is actually causing an infection, they'll administer an "antibiotic cocktail" -- combining antibiotics to hopefully knock out what's there. I know this has been helpful to some gliders, but, of course, we're not vets, and they should be the ones to suggest these kinds of things -- just something to ask about?

Am praying for you and your glider, JenJen, and hope you can get some answers soon.

I'm sorry to hear about Kuzco, but if he is anemic spinach is high in iron especially when cooked. I'm crossing my fingers for your baby.

Wow..thank you all for your kind responses. xfilfan: I bet thats why he did vomit it up, because I did give him a lot ...but also probably because he was in so much pain. After I gave him his meds he ate the grapes just fine while laying on his back in my shirt, SO CUTE! I went and got a cage out of the shed for him to spend the night in, he had two pouches in there, with a dish of ensure, a dish of gatorade (as suggested by bourbon) and a dish of grapes, I put him in his pouch and handed him a ton of grapes, in case he didnt wanna get out of the pouch he'd have some in there, he was lovin it. His cage is sitting next to the others. I didnt really see him out all that much last n ight, but then again, I passed out at around 1:30 am...Thank you for your suggestions.

Peggy: I will be taking him to Karins vet this morning at 10 am. The dr. she is talking about used to actually be a vet at the place where I normally take him. She has guided me, and I feel much better about getting another opinion...after all..my Dr...just kept giving the same advice, which in turn, hasnt helped. We (Karin, bourbon and I) Believe the reason for it to keep coming back is because I was told to use the same medicine over and over again.

Lucy: Thank you, I have written your suggestions down to ask about while im there.

Again, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for my baby. Hes made it this far with all the pain hes probably been in (plus he also came to me as a rescue after being neglected so thats another fight of his) He never crabs or bites me, hes always such a good baby, and im so proud of him. I have to finish getting ready so I can hit the road to the new dr's office. Again, thank you.

no this isnt something that is 'just' diet related. I know many ppl have said for yrs that its caused simply by certain dryer diets but i have never agreed with this.
I have seen this in numerous animals from mice to horses,it laso is something ppl get too. what happens is a piece of something and it can really be almost anything gets stuck under a gum line or there is some sort of injury, inflamation starts and it goes from there til u have an abcessed area. Providing water with food and all times with any food helps but again, because its more about an individual and circumstance it can still happen. Infact some dry food in any diet will help to exercise the teeth and gums and help them stay healthy. healthy gums stay closer and tighter to the teeth and are firmer, making foriegn bodies harder to get into the gums in the first place. this is good information that many really need to pay attention to,your case and the re-currance after swtiched diets backs this information up.
First i want to say hang in there and second i want to tell u,good job because u have kept on it,gotten treatment and are doing all the right things.
In austrailia there are beaches where wallabies like to get handouts, these little wallaby end up eating things like potatoe chips, sandwiches and all the sorts of things ppl bring along with them to a beach. they are not eating foods that are totally dry but simply foods they shouldn't be eating. It is enough that a vast number more get abcesses, much higher then the more inner populations with less human exposure....
hope ur little one is doing wel and getting better.
Cynthia

they can tell if an animal is anemic by the tissues and membranes in the mouth,it must have been noticably paler then his usual-this can be typical for animals going thru things like this where there is sugeries, wieght loss and eating less, especially when it is ongoing

Ok..sorry for the long wait..I had to work a long shift today. Well...I took some notes at the dr's office. first...the dr. said he was dehydrated so he gave him subq fluids. He also was looking over the records from the other vets office, and trying to pinpoint when it all started, which was Jan 5th. He gave me baytril, since the OTHER dr. never gave it to me, and I have to give it to kuzco twice a day. He wants me to continue his pain meds for another 5 days, once a night. He says to keep him in the smaller cage for now, and If I want to put another glider to keep him company to do so. Kuzco is doing very well and eating better. better than last night at least! The dr. really couldnt do anything about the surgery that was done or the tests that were taken, because we still need to wait on the results from the culture,a nd the other thing I keep calling a biopsy but im not sure if thats what it was... He said there are some types of cultures (cant remember the name) that sometimes takes longer to get back the results for. He said the dead (brown) tooth is fine (other dr said the same) because he said its still very much intact and its still functioning, its just lost the nerves. He said kuzcos equilibrium was probably off because of the pain he was feeling with the swollen jaw, and that he didnt think it was an inner ear problem. He was 72 grams yesterday, and 76 grams this morning very happy about that. I think I've covered it all....and tomorrow morning, I shall be getting the stuff for the BML diet like Bourbon suggested *sigh* going on...4th diet now..I will be getting the tent out soon to see how kuzco is doing-play time wise. At least this way he can see the others...Thanks for keeping in touch and caring so much

karin...thanks for the Dr. advice, hes just great!

O, I am so happy he is doing better Jen, wonderful news. Keep watchful eye on him, and let's hope the culture gives some explanations. Alot of time after a sub-Q, glider's do get hungry , and that weight gain of 4g. is great! Keep us updated.
