Someone told me if you can't take the bite their not for you. But its normal reaction to pull back, any ideas of how not to pull back, if he tries?

I agree with Romans838 on the type of bites.
However, you do not have to take the bite in order to bond with your glider. You will also not be teaching him that he can bite you if he wants. I wrote an article on how to bond with your glider and not take the bite and you can read that here . If you pull away just make sure to put your hand right back where it was. The article will explain it in much more detail. I hope this helps.

i liken the worst bite to that of a tiny lil vampire bite as that is how it appears as two puncture wounds

Not bad to terrible, and it just depends on the glider. If you can find a breeder who will work with you, its possible to never have to take a bad bite.

Well, as one of the people that's been really munched on by a few gliders I have something to say on this topic. I agree Romans838 that there are a few different type of bites, but I kind of classify them differently...

The Nip: This is a soft nip. It doesn't really hurt, it just feels like somebody pinched you.

The Strike: This is usually done by timid gliders. They will strike at you out of fear. It's an open mouthed strike, but they rarely close their mouth. It's scarier than it is painful, but you will feel teeth.

Warning Bite: This is a little stronger than a nip. It can puncture skin, but is usually a quick. "bit and release". Not very painful, but tends to sting...

Bite: This is when they really clamp on to you. It will break skin and can penetrate rather deeply. The will usually let go after a few seconds... It's best to flush out bite wounds because they are very prone to getting infected.

Pit-bull Bite: This is when a glider does a whole mouth bite. It is often associated with head shaking and crabbing. Pit-bull biting can cause a lot of damage. The bite doesn't always break the skin, but the head shaking can cause deep tissue (muscle) damage and can take weeks to heal from.

I agree. Little nips are just tasting you but bites are not needed to take. From my experience with birds and even dogs bites are the last resort of many animals and its because they are scared. You wouldn't just take a bite from a parrot or dog, it seems that some feel with gliders you should, but I think it is wrong. Just because they are smaller and the bites are not as severe as from a parrot does not mean that it is good.
Many animals only bite if cornered and the same for gliders.
When they do stop biting after being made to bite many times it then becomes a behovior they quit because they give up. In other words you taught them they have no rights to tell you they don't want to come out or they would rather stay in the pouch. It is learned helplessness. I think that is the term.
I always go at the animals pace to learn I will not harm them. I have worked with many rescues of different species and this is what I hae learned over time.

Check out the link by Danielle, it really is a good post.
And Good luck

Even the hardest bites don't hurt very much. Emmit has never broken my skin, even if he's really angry! I think scratches from sharp nails hurt worse than the bites.

...and I forgot to say --

I've noticed that Emmit only bites hard if I have changed my laundry detergent or purfume, or if I forget to wash my hands after eating or putting on lotion. I think it's because he doesn't recognize my smell right away.

Walker, that is not true. I've heard of people having to get stitches after a glider has laid into them. They may be small, but if they get mad they can do a lot of damage. I'm not trying to criticize or contradict you. Most gliders won't bite like that, but there are some out there that do and I feel it's best to warn people just in case they ever happen to come across a glider that really does bite (I'm had 2).

I agree that the force of the bites vary according to the situation. My Glider has bitten me several times because he didn't want to be picked up and it didn't hurt much at all. Once the same Glider bit my brother out of fear and it brought blood.

I once made the mistake of handling one pair and not washing my hand then handling another and got bit, hard. But the worst bite was when I accidently place one male in the wrong transportation bucket and it contained a male a female and her IP joeys. I had to forcable seperate the glider and in the process one of the males bit my pinky and scraped the bone with his teeth. It hurt bad, but was a puncture and did not require stiches.

In my opinion, Glider bites are not that bad! It is more starteling to have an animal that you are trying to love, jump at you with an open mouth. The only hurt I have had was Hurt feelings! I know that gliders are capable of biting alot harder than mine do, but the probability of it is few and far between! Don't push them, corner them, or make them do somethng they are not ready for and you should be just fine! Once you get useto the nipping, you will stop being afraid of it!

If you have a parrot, I think you'll likely be able to take it

But definitely read Danielle's (K&D Exotics) article that she linked to. It's a great one.

I will add, though, that you may not really have to worry about bites. From our conversations, I've learned that you plan to get a joey from one of our great members here at GC, so really it's not terribly likely that you'll have to deal with a lot of bad bites. I've found that the only times I've personally really been nailed was by rescues who had been abused.

Obviously severety of the bite matters but where you get bit matters also. I got bit on the tip of my finger, not real pleasant broke skin but not enough to bleed. I've also been bit on the knuckle, that didn't hurt so bad. In with what Natalie said if you have a parrot, well glider bites aren't that bad.
