This is the first time I have ever posted in real stories after losing a glider, it is so hard for me to do. I found Oliver laying in the bottom of his cage this afternoon. At first I thought he was just sitting as he sometimes did, and was talking away to him. I left the room for a few minutes and when I returned he was still sitting there. I opened the cage door and sure enough he had passed away. It couldn't have been too long before I discovered him because he was still warm and soft. I have no idea why he passed on, he was so healthy and active just yesterday.

Oliver was a little rescue that I adopted last October. He had been purchased at an auction then taken home by this person and basically ignored because he did not trust people and was hard to handle. Oliver and I worked together for several months and he came to trust me although we did not fully bond. He would come out on my arm to go to the play room and would sit on my shoulder and jump on me when we were playing. I respected Oliver and just let him be himself and accepted that he was who he was and as long as he was happy and healthy, it didn't matter to me that he couldn't fully bond with a human. The fact that he came to trust me and be my friend was enough. I don't know what kind of a past he had, but being in an auction is clue enough. I also have no idea of how old Oliver may have been. All I know is that I loved him and will cherish the small amount of time we had together. He was my buddy and will be my buddy again.

It seems that cage accidents are occuring more often than in the past and we really need to go over our cages with an eagle eye and try to detect anything that could pose a problem. I have lost two gliders from cage accidents. No matter how carefully we try and place things, accidents can still happen and sometimes they just aren't quite as tough as we think they are, and even though they may seem ok at first after falling, they can suffer internal injuries that won't show up for several days as in the case of my little Genne. She had fallen and had liver damage and also had knocked her little hip out of joint. Neither of these injuries were apparent for three days.

Sorry, I didn't mean to get on a roll here, but it is very important to check our cages periodically for potential problems. Thank you all again for your support, it's so hard to go it alone. You all are the greatest group of people I know!

So wish I was there to give you a big hug <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />.

I am so glad that little Oliver had nearly a year of your precious love and care concern before he passed on to Rainbow Bridge. sounds like his life before you was just horrible. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shakehead.gif" alt="" /> Hope you find some peace and consolation in knowing that you made sure Oliver knew what love is all about before he left this world. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> Thank God Oliver was in your tender care; you made a positive difference in his life. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />

I am so sorry. I know that Oliver got to know true love from you. He is now waiting at the bridge untill you meet again. Doing rescue is hard, I have such respect for those who adopt a rescue. The time it takes to form trust is usually long. Oliver came to see you as a friend, and his safe place. He is watching over you now <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frostyangel.gif" alt="" />I will keep you in my thoughts.

I'm very sorry, Joy. After all the worrying you've done in recent weeks, to suddenly find you've lost another glider is a horrible realization.

I'm a little concerned about the close proximity of this death to the other problems you're having. Could you have a necropsy done on Oliver to make sure you're not dealing with aflatoxins or something contagious?

O Joy, I am so very sorry <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />. These lil rescues know they have finally found a home and are loved, just like Oliver. He passed knowing he had a friend <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />. I am so sorry Joy.

He was able to learn what love was in the short time you had him so you were able to give him more than he ever thought he would have.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />I was so sorry to hear of your little one's passing-I think its harder with a rescue you love, knowing a large part of their life before they came to you wasn't good. It just doesn't seem fair that now they have a good, loving home, good food, toys, etc. they have to leave us. I'll ask the four of ours at the bridge to keep him special company until you get there someday!

Thank you all so much for your kind words and prayers, it really does help. I wanted to let everyone know that we think Oliver's death was probably due to an accident in his cage. When I picked him up, his lower jaw was extended and his bottom teeth were protruding up over the top of his nose. He may have lost his balance and fallen either hitting something on the way down or injuring his jaw when he fell on the bottom of the cage. Of course this is only speculation, but at this time seems to be the only probable cause. Dear joy ,
I am very sorry that your baby is gone . My heart goes out to you. I also just lost a glider about a week ago. It was very bad . It is also posted in real stories under glider hurt please help. I still cry when i think of him and my daughter Is now in the hospital because of it. But it helps to visit this wonderful site because we have such a great family here to help us through these tough times. You must remember that your special baby is over the Rainbow bridge now and having lots of fun. If you need someone to talk to you can call me day or night no matter what time it is. I have found it hard to sleep at night because my glider is not here any more to put smiles on peoples face. My phone # is 219-879-6218.

Hi Joy...thank you for the alert to be aware of what we place in our suggies cages.

Just last night, we were placing feeding bowls on the shelf where we feed our babies...low and behold, the shelf fell sending bowls (some ceramic) of food 6' to the bottom of the cage. Thank God none of our babies were harmed, but it could have been disasterous. Had someone been on the bottom of the cage and hit by one of those bowls.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />, can't even think about what could have happened. Fortunately, they all jumped to the side of the cage and were unharmed.

Because of this, we have gone the extra mile and secured the wooden perchs that hold the shelf "and" the shelf wiring with chicken bands to make sure it never falls again.

The other thing I wanted to share was a sad story of the lady we bought our Zoie from....again, just as a caution concerning toys and accessories in our cages. Zoie's mom, Molly died after becoming tangled in a string from her pouch made of cotton. By the time Maria found Molly, she had wrapped herself around and around trying to get loose from the string....only to wrap herself tighter. She suffocated. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />

Joy, thanks for sharing with us and hopefully other gliders lives will be spared because what we learned from little Oliver's tragedy.

Hugs to you dear friend. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/gliderangel.gif" alt="" />

[:"blue"]Eventhough we have talked about this sweet little one, I know how much you are hurting. Little Oliver was so lucky to have found you even if for a short time. How wonderful that he knew so much love in such a short time.

I'm so sorry for your unexpected loss! I just dont get how they just die like that... My vet says the same thing... You can do everything proper and one day you just find them DEAD without any signs! makes me so sad <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I dont know how I would react if that ever happened! But you did your best and gave him a GREAT several months of his ending life, and for that I thank you!
