Thank you for doing that.
While I do agree with alot of the list...there are a few things I do not agree with.

There really is no being careful with crickets (unless you know 100% where they come from or can somehow make sure they are aflatoxin free and maybe raise your own...not sure if you can make sure they are safe enough, dont know of any tests, or if there are youd still have to have every cricket tested and then there wouldnt be any to feed. )

Some people do occassionally feed lima beans and gassy type foods (broccoli, etc)... moderation is the key...you dont want to feed alot of gassy type foods all the time or in big amounts, cause I can imagine that having upset tummys (gas) is no fun for these little ones. (it was speculated that they could not pass gas... after asking many vets, Ive been told that this was false... but still, Id hate to think of my little ones having an upset tummy and not be able to tell me about it.)

As for spices, not really a good idea for alot of spices ...I know my 'kids' have gotten little sprinkles of cinnamon mixed in their breakfast baby cereal for years. (the only way they like it. )

It is a nice list! And serves as a good warning for others! That was so nice of you to put together!

You may wanna add "No rhubarb" to it as well... (Ive never personally heard of toxicity in a Glider from eating it, Im not sure if anyone has ever attempted it...but it is known to be toxic to many animals. )

Also... Alot of us do not feed peanuts. (same risk as with the crickets)

Some people say no potatoes... my kids have always enjoyed a little tiny treat of plain mashed potatoes on the rare occassion...
I do know that you never want to feed an animal the "eye" of a potato...the little white sprouty thingys that can grow on the skin of the potato. (toxic)

Hmmmm, I just thought of something else and now I cant remember...LOL.
Ill have to think about it somemore...

Someone else may have more to add...

What about cranberry seeds?

Also, on another listing someone said no parsley, any idea why?

Are sprouts allowed?

Well it just has to make me wonder. I probably have a necropsy report that would justify not using raisins and grapes. We use grapes often and raisins for treats. Cider's kidney's were much more involved than his liver.

*hugs* Carrie

I do NOT feed raisins and very rarely do my kids get a half a grape. Ive been worried about it and tried to research it for the last two years. (just my personal choice...as I know alot of people do offer these items.)

Hmmm, well I have never fed fresh cranberries... I have fed dehydrated ones. I dont know why parsley was listed, I have never heard that. And sprouts, I have no clue either... or if it would matter what type.
(boy that was alot of help wasnt it...lol...sorry. )

Why not grapes or raisins?

I started feeding frozen cranberries when Ozzy was sick with the blood in his urine once every week or so. Didn't know they had seeds until then, so I'd cut each berry into eighths and pick out the seeds. (Am I obsessive or what?)

Thanks Dustin for the list!

I chose not to feed raisins or rarely grapes by my own personal choice. Heres a post that kind of explains my reasons... its up to each individual to choose what they feel is best to feed, or not feed their babies.
"Are raisins REALLY bad for dogs?"

The banana is classified as a fruit... although the banana plant is not a tree, but actually classified as the worlds largest herb.

Aww, okay thanks. They go in the "Okay" coloumn. I'm making a spreadsheet of foods for my suggies to post on the fridge. I have 4 categories "Okay", "In Moderation", "Remove Seeds" and "NOT Okay".

I'm sorry, this is TOTALLY off topic, but "Pupcake"? Now that's the cutest puppy name I've EVER heard! Man...the people on this site are the most creative when it comes to naming our animal friends...

You might want to add a column that is "open to debate." Meaning that some people say yes... others say no...

hipbchik Thanks

Lynn, thanks for the tip. For now I am putting them in the "In Moderation" coloumn. I figure with all the foods that are listed there it will only be once in a blue moon that they get one of the debated on foods anyway. I'm also going to put a note on the bottom to make a quick list of the foods that are okay but not very high in nutrients like celery and such.

I have a few foods I'd like to question while I'm making the list. Are these okay?

pickels
plums
boisenberry
pomegrante
pumpkin

Also, I read of a few people who said they gave their suggies red, yellow, and green bell peppers. Are those okay? I want to make sure they don't hurt their tummies at all. And, lastly, I heard that too much corn is bad as well. I know moderation is the key to everything but I don't know what constitutes too much.

Thanks!

[:"magenta"]hi victoria! i am pretty sure plums are ok, just remove the pit and wash well before serving. pickles, i would not do. they usually have sweeteners, preservatives, spices, etc. corn....i am not sure how much is too much. the reason too much is bad is becuase it has too much phosphorous, and not enough calcium (bad phos:cal ratio). hope this helps. pumpkin, boisenberry & pomegrante are ok

The one time we offered pomegrante, I put all the seeds in a bowl. The "kids" dived in, took a bite from each and threw them farther than I've ever seen them throw food. We were laughing so hard we had pomegrante seeds all over the living room before we finally took the bowl away! I've since been told they probably weren't ripe enough for our picky eaters!

I agree with the others.
Plums are ok. (like mentioned, de-pit and wash well)
Pickles, I would have to say no as well.
Corn, in moderation if their on a well balanced diet.
Never tried Boisenberry. Maybe someone else may know.
Pumpkin, yes, in moderation (can cause loose stools... pumpkin is also good for constipation.) My kids LOVE pumpkin... but only get it every once in awhile.
Bell peppers... are ok in moderation as well... my kid-os only like the red ones....maybe their sweeter or something? I dunno...I dont eat them...lol.
(this is just my opinion, and what I do )

Oh dont appologize! Its good you ask questions if you have them! Thats what this place is here for! To learn and share and ask questions!

My kids dont like asparagus... might depend on the individual glider.
As for eggplant... my kids LOVE it. (I end up wasting alot of it though because of all the seeds in it... I get paranoid so I cut around the middle part where all the seeds are...doesnt leave much eggplant...lol. )
Maybe someone else may have some better advice.

isn't asparagus a gassey food like broccoli? I was told that buy someone (don't remember who though) might want to add that to the "in moderation" colum. I could be way wrong though anyone else??

Your not safe list has a lot of stuff on it- most of those aren't toxic, and CAN be fed in moderation. Lima beans, leeks, foods with very small amount of spices, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, garlic, and peanuts will not harm your glider in small amounts. They key is moderation. I would move those to your moderation list... and then on your moderation list I'm wondering about pumpkin. No one food should make up 100% of the diet, but small amounts of pumpkin daily should be perfectly fine for gliders. Grapes can also be a daily food, there is nothing wrong with these unless your glider is eating nothing BUT grapes.

Actually, that's not my list if you're talking to me. My list has all of the gassy foods under in moderation and I have quite a bit more listed in all coloumns. Like I said I would post it here but it's a .wsk file which isn't allowed.

What about avacados? I tried one the other day and my baby loved it. Of couse he refused it next time I tried it. Also how much watermelon is too much...my little Booger would eat it every day and twice on Sunday if I would let him.
