I have 3 pairs of gliders housed seprately and I recently noticed what looked like sores on the back of one of my females. Thinking that her mate may have done this to her, I separated them and nothing had changed. I was told that it could be mites so I set about cleaning their cages and destroying any peice of wood or fabric that was in the cages. I did notice a lot of mites. By the way my problem now is that I have 2 females with sores on their backs and one has mutilated her tail; to the bone in some areas. I can't get to a vet until tomrrow. She is stable and I have bathed her and treated her with the correct medicine to combat the mites. Is there something I can do to clean the wound and keep it clean for the night? In additon I have another cage that was in close proximity to the one with the most mites that has nursing parents in it. I have looked over them very carefully and didn't see anything abnormal. I'm wondering how to bathe the nursing mother with babies. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Mites can be host specific related. Otherwords...all of us have mites. However, if the immune system is supresed for one reason or another(example: Stress) the mites that normally would not be a problem now become unchecked.

vet care is needed ASAP.

All gliders should be taken in to be checked in this situation and it should be done ASAP as Judie has stated.

well i talked to the vet and he seemed to not be too worried about the animals other than the two girls with the sores the one that hasent been mutilateing he said was fine a little neosporin on the wounds and all will be good as for the other one she had to stay overnight and her tail is being amputated the one wound on her back was necrotic so while she is under he will clean it out with any luck she should be home tonight and recovering in more famillar surroundings

Did the vet treat for the mite problem? You can also spray their housing and bedding down with 8-1 mite Bird Spray as well as the gliders themselves if need be. Be carefull to avoid getting it in their eyes.

Also, a good diet creates wellness in a glider. Not sure what kind of diet you are feeding but you may want to hop on over to the diet forum and check it out. You need a diet that is rich in calcium and other essential ingredients.

Good to hear the two gliders are doing much better since their visit to the vet. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />

the vet didnt treat for the mite problem as he thought the steps i was taking was sufficent i have a local breeder that has the drops u put on their neck and i also used cat flea and tick shampoo the vet confirmed that flea and tick shampoo, powder and spray are ok to use as long as they are for cats

well guys today is the day to have the stitches removed i took off work early to get her down to the vet i was totally suprised to arrive home and wake her only to find her going defensive on me but not making ANY noise her mouth wide like she would normally be letting me have it but she was completly silent i knew something was very wrong so off we went to the vet barreling through rush hour traffic to get her help as fast as i could it was all for not though we had to put her to sleep at about 5:30 mst she had gotten penumonia and her lungs were totally full of fluid apparently her infection from the sores on her back had gone systematic and the vet didnt think she would live knowing that she had bee thri=ough soo much already i said my goodbyes she scampered up my chest one last time i said to its ok to just give up baby she yawned a couple times then she left us...

there is an alternative to lengthy cleaning and treatments of sprays etc to a mite problem. the sores u describe are probably dermititis caused by the reactions to the mites and the gliders are then biting and chewing these areas. this can then become infected and could result in losses if the infection is then not treated.
the alternative in the long run will cut on costs tho it will cost u a fair amount to treat in the beginning. u will not have to treat the enviroment at all either. fisrt u must get to the vet.ask the vet to give your gliders injections of IVERMECTIN (good for prevention and curing)if the gliders have started to devolop infections of the skin ask if they are able to take a 3 week course of antibiotics. it needs to be three weeks becuase the anitbiotics need to work the hair follicils aswell as the skin itself to completely cure the infections.
i donnot know if gliders can take novolexin for sure but this is a top antibiotic in other animals for skin and hair follicil infections.I would take them all to the vet if they are housed within 6 ft of each others cages.
shampoos will work on a temporary basis so if u dont get every single one the problem will come back. i would not recomend flea or tic shampoos as they donnot always remidy the problem,a mite -specific shampoo would be more effective if u go with that instead, but with the injection this will not even be needed either. The drops u refer to? i hope this is not any thing like the monthly treatments ment to prevent heartworm and or fleas, some cover tics and internal parasites too? advantage, revolution, proceptor???
this are cat and dog speicfic some of the ingredients are very very strong and can cause a reaction of toxicity when used on the wrong species of animals, even using the dog formulas on cats can cause the cats to become severely ill,i would not recomend using that under any circumstance. please consider the small animal specific one i mentioned above already.
and lastly if the skin is raw or sore in the affected areas u can also recieve either an oral anti-inflamatory or a topical cream to sooth it.
Like i said it will cost a fair amount BUT it will cure your gliders, their enviroment and protect them from any immediate re-infections aswell.
the type of mites the gliders would have are not types that will go on ppl too in all likeliness,if they did they would just crawl off again without affecting u.
unless they are demetex, which u would not see with the naked eye,one of two types of mange mites,as these are in the enviroment on ppl and animals, and will over populate on an animal or person if the body is already too busy fighting other problems of health or are very old or young.
the vet will be able to tell what kind of mite it is by looking in the microscope after taking a skin and hair sample. If u can see these then they are not the type of mites known as demedex.there are dozens of species and only a few are everywhere so to speak. The type you are descibing is more of one of the parasitic kind that must affect them by some type of contamination.such as one of the gliders u bought having them, someone else's pet that was around yours had them etc etc.avoid shopping in unkempt petshops that could be contributing to the problem aswell, donnot buy opened beddings or foods etc.
good luck.
