I just bought some sugar Cane off the net, and used have a stick as a treat and stuck the rest in the freezer. Do you think it will last?

And I just found the same thing in a natural foods store for cheaper, plus I don't have to pay for shipping! Yea! They were called "Swizzle Sticks" and packaged for human consumption instead of bird consumption... but they were most definatly the same thing. Pure sticls of sugar cane.

Amanda, it really isn't a good idea to feed your gliders pure sugar cane. They could possibly develop hyperglycemia. Your diet and snacks should be low in sugar. I made that mistake when I got my first glider, I thought sugar cane would be a great treat. Check out the diet threads at the top of this forum for good and bad food lists <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

I had heard about Sugar Cane too, & was so excited when I found it. From posting to this board, I found out the best thing is to give it in moderation, just like any other glider treats, & no more than a piece about an inch X an inch & a half .
My gliders weren't that interested in it, but they didn't like Glider Ade at first either & LOVE it now; I'm gonna try it again in about a week. oh...& I keep mine in the freezer also.

I gave them about a 3 inch piece, about as thick around as a straw, I'll cut it down next time, but I can't see it being bad in moderation of course. They have only had one so far. Jaxom LOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEDDD it. I thought he was going to drool all over the cage. LOL. I tied it to the top of the cage with twisty ties, and they ripped it to shreds.

I'm glad it keeps in the freezer, most stuff does but you never really know. I'll cut the size of the piece down next time. I figure one every other week or so is probably okay.

During housekeeping (deleting old threads), I came across this post and another one about sugar cane. In the other one, the answers to the question of whether sugar cane was okay to feed as treats were "Yeah, go ahead, mine love it!" whereas this post was mostly against it.

I just wanted to add that just like with humans, it's okay to occasionally give something that's not necessarily healthy as a treat, but to adhere to the old adage "moderation is the key". Think of sugar cane as a piece of chocolate pie (figuratively, we know not to give chocolate to gliders) and just give some once in a blue moon. Even once a week is pretty often for a big gooey dessert.

I'm deleting the other post, so I thought I'd add that to this one.
