I noticed a while back that The Sugar Glider Shop has a new insect eater diet. The ingredients sound really good and are very simple. The analysis look good as well. I guess what I wanted to ask was has anyone here tried it? If so how well did they take to it? I do not want to use it to replace thier normal diet, just to add a different protien source a few nights a week.

I haven't heard of it, nor (of course) tried it. tounge If you already have them on one of our recommended diets, follow whatever diet you've chosen, as outlined. Don't mix and match the various plans or ingredients or you'll throw off the overall calcium to phosphorus (Ca:P) ratios, as well as introduce other unhealthy imbalances.

If you do want to use it as a different protein source, and the diet you're on allows for that, I would contact whoever developed the diet and ask their opinions.

*bumping this back up*
ok... nicole uses P's and actually, varying gliders' diets with other similarly balanced foods is good for them from what I've read and my own limited personal experience. Insect eaters is supposed to have a very good Ca:P ratio, similar to P's.

I hope someone will reply that has tried this diet, I'm curious as well,...
It is mentioned in several posts so surely someone has an opinion...

the only thing that it DOESNT say is if it is a soft food or a hard pellet, and if there is a specific list of fruits and veggies (if any) should be fed with the staple...

I bought a can of the Insect-Eater diet from Exotic Nutrition back when I first got my gliders. I used a spoonful as a protein source a couple times a week. It's a like a canned, gelatinous, pudding-type stuff with whole and partial insects mixed into it. It's a bit stinky and it's important that you keep it refridgerated after opening like with all the "can-o" bug products. Overall, I'd have to say it's a great product and I had no real complaints about it.

I have always varied my gliders diet. Because of my gliders I have learned a lot about what fruits and vegetable's contain as far as nutrients. I soley feed mine the PP diet as a staple, but as far as options on offering them other foods I am always looking for different things to offer them. I have beed feeding mine like for about 3-4 years with absolutly no problems at all. I even add 100% pomegranate juice to her formula or 100% carrot juice at times. I do this just to change the flavor so they do not get burned out on it. I guess what I am trying to say is that from what I have read gliders seem to live longer in captivity. This (IMO) has to be from us feeding them far more nutrient rich foods than what they find in the wild. If we do the research on our fruits and veggies we can then make a good decision on their diet. When you have an animal that will eat a variety of foods they get much better nutrition from eating a more diverse diet. I used to NEVER read the ingredients on foods, for myself, since my gliders have entered my world I find myself reading the ingredient lable on just about everything, especially if I am wanting to buy the gliders or my children something! This Insect Eaters diet was very simple, no preservatives, nothing artificial, no added color, no sugars, no salts, the Ca:P ratio was good and best of all I did not have to look up long words I could not pronounce to find out what it was, LOL!! I hate that!

Liz, the next time you are reading the analysis on a product, where it says Moisture Content if the percentage is high like with this one 59.6% it will be pretty moist.

Thank you North_Nocturn, I think I will buy a can and see how mine take to it.

lol does anyone ever find it funny how we'll double, triple check our gliders' nutrition to make sure they're healthy, but we eat at mcdonalds 5 times per week?
I have eaten there about 20 times in the last two weeks but I don't let my gliders have anything but the best... lol I just think that's funny.( and kind of sad)

LOL, yup! I did one time give Bebe half of a fruit snack! I am even like that with my kids. Candy is only around during certain times of the year. Do not tell them this, but during Halloween I grab a handful of candy out each night and throw it away. During Christmas I fill their stocking with fruit instead of candy. However, I can sit down and indulge in a Sonic banana fudge sunday quilt free! wink

Hi, Everyone!

I have the Insect Eater's diet can which I purchased from Exotic Nutrition. My gliders would not touch it...they did not eat even a bite. I purchased it because the ingredient list seemed very healthy...and indeed, it does...but mine refuse it. I intended to use it as a treat for them that would be healthy, but they would rather I not treat them to it! smile

It is in a can and is the same texture as wet dog or cat food...a solid mass that is mushy and can be scooped out. I was hoping this would be a wonderful way for me to offer them other insects besides mealies in their whole form, all in one can, but they just don't like it. A few folks on GA have also mentioned that their gliders won't eat it at all, and a few others have said their gliders love it. smile Everyone seems to give it a pretty bad wrap for the smell, but to me it just smelled no better or worse than you'd expect a can of pet food to smell...it smelled kind of like veggies and dirt. smile Anyhow, best of luck with it. I'd be interested to see if your gliders will eat it. Mine stuck their snobby noses up and said "no thank you!" smile LOL

Hmmm, I will give it a shot and see how they take to it. I could only imagine what it would smell like! I tried to place a smell for veggies and dirt with no luck, lol! I will be sure to post how they like it!

Thank you everyone for your responses, I greatly appreciate it!

Me and my gf just recently got 2 baby gliders. We purchase the INSECT EATER diet at a local pet store and they seem to love eating it. It is basically pellets in a can and it smells like any other types of animal pellets. Our glider will not eat any fruit as of yet. They would only munch on BML and those pellets. The breeder we purchase the glider from recommended us to feed them the INSECT EATER diet. I would recommend it.

Hmmmm, I may have to try this. I am always looking for ways to vary their diets to keep it interesting, as long as it is nutritious!

I tried it when they first came out with it. My gliders seemed to be spoiled on live insects. (they didn't like it much) Since I am feeding most of the ingredients to my gliders already, such as insects and vitamins, I decided not to make it part of their permanent diet. It seems like it would be a good substitute though!

I too have gotten this.......I opened the can, ick! It did not look appealing and I guess it wasn't as all of my gliders would NOT touch it and I put it in a few times to make sure, nope, they wanted nothing to do with it.

LOL my gliders are not picky with it they all loved it but the smell is really bad. I do not use it as a diet but give it to them as a treat.
