My 2 yr old male glider has got a small spot that looks like it is balding. It isn't the scent gland, but between that and his right ear. If a pic would help I'll see if I can post one. He is my only glider (for now) and has never had any problems before. And other then it just looks like he has a bald spot, he is otherwise fine. What could it be, and should I take him to a vet?

Thanks

how old is he and how long have you had him.. was he always an only glider or did you get him from someone who had multiple gliders in the same cage?? It might be nothing like he got some BML and pulled out some hair trying to clean it, or he could be self mutilating/over grooming...

Here is a link to the pic, I think, let me know if you can't see the pic.

Other then that one spot, he seems fine and happy. I know that he "overgrooms" me!! Sometimes it seems like I can't get him to stop licking me!!! He is even doing it right now on my hand while I type.

LindsayAnnG, first, I want to clear up a mis conception.

Self Mutilation and Over grooming are two entirely differerent things. Self mutilation is a reaction to pain. When a glider is in pain, it believes it is being attacked. When it can't see it's attacker, it attacks the place it hurts. This is a vicious cycle that can lead to death if not caught and dealt with in time.

Overgrooming is generally caused by stress, loneliness, posible illness (such as but not limited to mites), diet or any combo of these things. If the overgrooming becomes severe to the point of causing pain, then yes, it can lead to self mutilation but up until that point, they are very different things.

Amy, that bald spot is in an unusual place for it to be simple overgrooming. It is posible he got something stuck in his fur and over groomed to get it out or he could have slightly injured himself causing the spot.

While a vet check never hurts, I'm not sure they will be able to tell you much. I personally would watch him over the weekend and if he has any other signs of illness, such as loss of activity, loss of appitite, loose stools, etc...then I would take him in right away. If he is fine over the weekend but the balding gets worse, I would take him to the vet to have it checked out. The reason I say this, is the stress over groomers I've had come to me, the balding is generally above the eyes or the top of their head along side their normal scent gland bald spot. Because of the location of this, I would have him checked if it gets any worse at all.

What diet are you currently feeding? Some overgrooming/hairloss is related to diet.

He is definately NOT showing any other signs of illness! grin Last night he ran all over the place! Lately I have been able to take him to the office with me during the day, and haven't noticed any extensive grooming. I usually feed him Pricsilla's (sp?) but have run out and need to make another batch. blush The past week or so, he's just been on fruits, veggies, and chicken, eggs, mealies (alternating days). I've pretty much kept with the diet, except just need to make another batch. I think I might have noticed it before, a while back, but as I don't usually give him an "inspection" every day, I didn't really think anything of it. It is kinda hard to see unless you get at the perfect angle (I took a lot of pics). A lot of times it looks like I have petted him and his hair is laying the wrong way. Thanks for the advice.

It looks like he somehow pulled it out or got a scratch...I agree with Dancing.

Off topic: Looks like he is one of P's ringtails if that white mark on his neck says anything....

Actually he isn't one of P's. I got him from a breeder at a reptile show. I think they called themselves Texas Exotics?? I don't really remember, but Wrigley has been the best little bud dI could ask for!

thanks Does overgrooming just suddenly happen, or do gliders that overgroom always do that? Like I said before, I've had him a little over 2 yrs and he's never done anything like that before. dunno

Overgrooming does just suddenly occur. But I agree with Teresa (Dancing) - the location of the bald area is unusual for it to be typical stress-related overgrooming. Watch it closely: if it gets bigger or the fur does not start to grow back in within the next couple of weeks, then a vet check is in order. If he exhibits any signs of illness, an immediate vet check would be crucial. Keep in mind that although he's acting perfectly healthy right now, gliders will continue to act normal until they are way too sick to do otherwise. At the point that they start to appear sick (lethargic, droopy eared, etc.) they are very close to death. Watch for ANY unusual activities on his part (awake during the daytime, sleeping in unusual places, etc.) and if you see anything out of the ordinary, bring him to the vet right away.

Thanks for the advice, it must just be a patch that he rubbed off at one point. Looking closely at it, it looks like the hair is growing in, it is just thin and can't be seen in the pic I posted. I haven't seen any unusual behavior, but I'll keep an eye out just in case.

He's doing fine. I guess it was just a scratch and the hair is coming back, but its really thin right now. Guess I was just a little freaked out. dunno I'm making a new batch of Pricsilla's so the food probably isn't the problem.
Thanks for everything!

Okay, I have been a little "obsessed" about this spot. It isn't getting any smaller, or bigger. I can't really see a lot of change and it's been a month. worried I took him to our vet last night after work and he was such a good boy. cool He didn't even crab once! The vet weighed him, checked his stool (we had to potty), looked in his eyes, ears, and mouth. He then took a skin scraping to rule out mites. Nothing wrong with my 106 gram boy...other then a spot without hair. Since Wrigley isn't scratching at it (he's with me all day long) he said it is unlikely that it is ringworm. If it doesn't get any better in 3 wks, we'll be heading back. Anyone have anything to add on this? Since he is a lone glider for the time being, I wondered if that could play a part. I was hoping that someone could give me an opinion on that. He seems content, but we are saving up for a friend.

ok, here is my experience. Meeko (my little boy) did the same exact thing... in the same exact spot. Weird huh? I took him to the vet and she gave him quite the exam, and found nothing. She even did a fungal scraping... nothing. It eventually went away on its own... especially after he got his sweet little Rikku (hinthint!) grin Every once in a while, it'll come back a little, but I don't worry anymore. If you took him to the vet and they declared a clean bill of health, and if he is acting normally (eating, behavior, bathroom habits, etc.) I wouldn't stress too much. You've done all you can. I can definitely say a girlfriend helped my little boy tho smile Good luck.

How long did it take to go away? I have been worrying about it to the point of distraction, but that might be because I have a little touch of OCD, and if there is anything out of the ordinary with my baby, the OCD catches it and doesn't let go until someone practically slaps me upside the head. smile Thanks so much, my mind has been set at ease. We will just wait for it to go away, and keep saving for his buddy.

how long...hmmm.. maybe a few weeks? I understand completely tho... I am the exact same way. Not only a hypochondriac for myself, but everyone (and animal!) around me. *lol* Keep us posted. and I'll be sure to keep an eye on Meeko's head now... just in case. ^_^
