Hello all

I've had my little Sam for about a week now, and already she is totally attached to me! She HATES going back into her cage after tent time. I usually go downstairs after tent time, which means my dogs and cats are around, so I can't take her with me. I had bought one of those run about balls that you put hamsters in when I got my first glider, and I haven't used it yet. I also haven't heard anyone on the boards mentioning those balls either. I was wondering if anyone used them with their glider? My first worry is that she likes to be up off the floor, so wouldn't she jump and hit her head on the ball? Or does anyone have gliders who like the ball? Any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ah yes, the balls!! Many of us have used them and if you do a search on them, I am sure you can find some of the postings. Mine will go in theres occassionally. You have to make sure their nails are not too long though other wise they may get snagged on the carpet or other things through the slots on the balls. Also, when you first introduce them to their ball, they may just sit there, not having any clue what to do and acting terrified...I know mine did but after about 5 minutes or so they were off running around!!
I would like to give a word of caution though, if you are going to be taking her in the same room as the dog and cat and they are not familiar at all with one another this could cause your glider to be very scared. I would move the animals in another room.

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

Of course I would seperate the creatures at first. And I would NEVER let my glider loose around my other pets. But I've read that in the ball they feel safe (after they get used to it) and I thought as long as my cats/dogs don't chase her or anything it would be ok. As it is my pets are terrified of the gliders... when they hear crabbing they quickly exit the house! I know gliders all react differently to different animals, and I know some people let their gliders interact with other animals. I wouldn't, just because it would be too traumatic if anything happened. But in the ball, they are a lot safer it seems. I wouldn't allow other animals around while Sam is in the ball if she seemed very frightened.

I've used the ball before -- Emmit liked it for a while, but then he started just sitting there until I let him out... I guess it depends on the glider.

We tried Murphy in a ball last night! He chased the cat!

That ball really gives a false sense of security about certain things such as letting other animals around the glider while it is in the ball. THe glider could tap it up against the wall and the door could open up on the ball and the glider could get out. The other animals could tap the ball just right and do the same thing. Once the glider is out of the ball he or she is fair game to the other animals. I wouldn't allow the other animals in the same room the glider was in even if it was in the ball just for these reasons. I have seen this happen with my daughters hamster when he was alive. So we never allowed the dog or cat in the same room as the hamster when he was in his ball. Just takes a quick second to happen and no matter how fast you are in catching it it may not be fast enough. Just my opinion on the ball and other animals.
