I am talking with a gal right now who is interested in one of my joeys. Anyway in an email I got from her today she asked me
Quote:

I'm also looking into a "peanut" do you know
what a "peanut is, from what I understand it's a smaller/runt joey?

I have been around a while and I have never heard of a peanut. Am I just lost or is there some one out there making things up. I kind of think someone told her this and they didn't know because the place she first saw sugars was at a home show here in town and I really don't think the person running the stand knows a whole lot about gliders.

I know that there are minatures and small petite (spelling?) gliders but I have no idea what a "peanut" is. Anyone heard this term before?

if this is in the wrong section sorry mods...feel free to move

The only thing I've heard referred to as a peanut is a joey that's a few weeks along IP. Maybe she misunderstood?

I just sent her an email asking her where she heard about a "peanut". I hope she doesn't take offense though. I feel lost in the dark that a new person who has only seen them at a home show knows more about gliders then I do

I am like you though AP....thats what I thought at first also. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is confused about this

In rabbits a peanut is a rabbit that gets a double dose of the dwarfing gene. It is lethal and the rabbit dies after a couple of days. Some people think they have peanuts that have lived, but they are actually just runts. A true peanut doesn't have correct insides to absorb enough milk to live.

It turns out that it is a different breeder here in Utah. I emailed the breeder to find out all the info I could. Critter Hill you were right she got the term from breeding rabbits. She said the joeys are just tiny little things and so are the parents. I asked for pictures and weights. She also said that her joeys in turn have smaller "peanut" joeys.

I am kind of skeptical on that though because my glider who is tiny and her man is also small aren't the best of parents (I'm giving them one more shot to prove me wrong)

If I do get pictures and weights on them I will ask if I can share to see what you all think. I'm just curiouse to find out how small they really are. Sorry if no one else cares

It would of course just be my opinion but I wouldn't go looking for a mini of such an already small animal. Wouldn't the health risks be a lot higher?

Please keep us updated about this I'm sure we would all be very interested to see the outcome of this. I do hope that she was not refering to the size of the baby when it looks like a peanut in moms pouch. She may should be told that there is no way a glider this young would ever live out of pouch .
