Some of you know that my William (Baby Boy) died a couple of nights ago from a lower intestinal blockage and perforation. This was confirmed beyond doubt by the post-mortem (necropsy). He gave me a minor bite on the thumb about 15-20 min. before he died while in the vet's office. No big deal. If it made him feel better to bite me, he can if he wants to. I've been bitten more times than I can count-some have broken the skin, and some haven't. They told my husband we could come pick up his body to bury him today, so I went down (100 mile round trip). "Apparently" the vet tech he spoke with was "In error", and they refuse to let him go! They SAY the laws in the state of utah say he has to be autopsied by the county animal control for RABIES!! Because of a stupid minor bite of which I've had dozens. All I can say is this is the STUPIDEST thing I've ever heard! The vet says THEY know gliders CAN'T get rabies, but the state doesn't make a distinction. I am so angry! And I said, If you know this, then WHY is this even happening? I didn't get an answer. They say I can have the body back in a week, MINUS HIS HEAD!!! WHY do they have to decapitate him? I'd like to know if anyone else has ever had this happen, or know of a glider ANYWHERE who's had rabies. Does anyone know, too, why they have to decapitate him to supposedly get a sample of brain tissue?? Any Utahns who can explain to me why they're putting me through this, and if they're going to try to take the rest of my gliders for some stupid reason?? I just can't believe this is happening!

I am so sorry this is happening to you. As for the Rabies, I can't answer your question, but there are strict laws when it comes to rabies, mostly for good reason. I know this is not what you wanted to happen to him, but remember, you gave him the best life while he was here, that you could control. This you can't. Don't beat yourself up over this. Know that he is in a better place and never will know that damage that has been done to his body. What you loved about him, his soul, is no longer in that body. It is only a shell. And he.. can not be damaged. I know someone else will come along and have some answers to your questions. I just wanted to say I am sorry your going through this.

sadly there is a story on the real stories site about a kid who took a glider to school, his glider bit a kid, they did take his glider cut off it's head and sent the head out for the testing.
Utah used to have very strict restrictions regarding gliders, a group work together to get the restrictions lifted, but Utah, didn't like the change, they are still very leary, sadly that group is no longer around to see the ramifications of that lift.
It is nothing personal, please don't take it that way. this is the fear of the fish and wildlife, they have to dot their i's and cross their t's, after a while, they too will feel more at ease regarding the rabies.
I am not saying in any way shape or form that they are right, just that I understand their need to feel secure. after all it isn't just your gliders they are dealing with.
as for them finding a reason to take the remaining, that never has been an issue before.

I'm so sorry that they're doing this to you it really sucks. I'm not sure why they cut the head off but they do. And it's with all animals not just some, cats, dogs, racoons. And like queenduck said don't beat yourself up, he's not there that's just his body.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I would be so mad at them. Like everyone else said they are only doing what they feel they legally have to do. It is only his body and he is no longer here with us so don't feel like it is him they are doing this to. Like someone else said it is just a shell of his body. Again I am so sorry that you are going through this as I can imagine how upsetting it is.

This has to be so hard on you! I also think they could get a brain tissue sample without taking the entire 'head'. But I'm sorry I cannot be of more help for ya.!!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss & it being compounded by the state. They never seem to understand the "human" side of things. As everyone has said, William is on the other side & it is only his body that remains. Perhaps cremation is an option for you in this case?

I'm so sorry you're going through this!!! After already losing a beloved pet, I know this feels very unfair. Unfortunately, the law is the law and there is very little we can do about it. I know I would be devastated in your place! Please take comfort in the fact that you have done everything you can for him. He is now beyond all pain and is patiently waiting for you.

Jen, I am so sorry. I would be livid, too. I can just imagine how this feels for you. I'm really, really surprised that a minor bite in the vet's office would lead to this. If every vet reported a glider bite as a potential rabies case, I'm sure none of us would be taking our gliders to the vet. A captive glider with no contact with other animals has a really, really low chance of having rabies (it's certainly possible for gliders to have rabies, though I've never heard of a case). Assuming your vet knows you, I can't imagine why this would have been reported as such. The only thing I can think of is that the restrictions for the state are very stringent regarding bites of any kind, even in vet offices. But I just can't imagine this. I'm so sorry!

Thanks, guys, I know he's not in there anymore. It just seems like adding insult on top of injury to mutilate him.(Not sure why it'll take a week to get the body back if all they need is the head, either). And having dealt with the state before, nothing they do would surprise me. I know they'll test a dog or cat if it bites someone (even if it's still alive). Well, I'm wondering now, since they consider them such a threat, if they realize that they bite frequently in some cases, if they'll want the rest of them? I'm afraid one of them will bite the wrong vet (good thing it was me). William bit Dr. Orr after neutering (our regular vet) and he wasn't concerned. I KNOW rabies didn't cause a perforated intestine or blockage, which IS the cause of death according to the necropsy. So I don't understand the reasoning behind this. I would if we didn't know what he died of, but this just makes no sense to me: They're not concerned about a bite if the animal lives, or dies later at home (we've had 4 of those), yet if the animal dies shortly thereafter, or at the vet's, even though a definite cause of death is determined, and not related to anything communicable, then it IS a concern? What kind of twisted logic is THAT? In any case, I'll take back whatever they let me have, whether it makes sense or not. And bury his partial remains. I can guarantee I'll deny ever being bitten in front of a vet again, even if I have to make them believe they didn't see it!! "Oh, no-he didn't bite me, just tapped his nose on my thumb. He's funny like that sometimes" -anything to avoid this again! To me, it's nearly as bad as someone saying, well, your son died in a crash, and we know that killed him, but we need to see if he was infected with parvo. So, in a week you can have his headless body back! Sheesh!

I am so sorry this is happening. It makes no sense to me either. As an indoor pet gliders have nearly a zero chance of getting rabies. Like any other mammel they would have to have been exposed to the bite, or saliva, of an infected animal (I don't know if it can be transmitted by urine or feces but gliders only rub against another gliders urine marks not a cats or dogs. It's stupid that they are putting you and your baby through this. My heart goes out to you.

Recently one of our gliders, Noah, died. We were unsure of why he died and so opted to have a necropsy performed as well. Where we live (Calgary, AB, Canada) they told us that if a necropsy is performed, we would not be able to have the body back.
We had no choice but to have the necropsy done as we were worried for our other sg. Fortuantely we found some useful information from the necrospy, though it really sucks that they would not allow us to have the body back.
I'm sorry to hear you weren't allowed to have your sg's entire body back either.
