Pouch is still out of sorts...is this OK? #256834

So I returned from my trip out of town today.

When I left, part of Tanooki's pouch was hanging out a bit. I'll post pics at the bottom of my post. I was flipping out because I had never seen this before, but luckily Dancing and others assured me that sometimes this happens when they are grooming and it's fine. There was no foul odor, no sign of swelling, redness, bleeding, or discharge. I left the suggies in the care of my wonderful roomie, who promised to call me immediately if anything changed.

Well, I checked out Tanooki's pouch today, and it looked...pretty much exactly the same. Still a healthy-looking bit of pink sticking out. No odor, discharge, redness, bleeding, or anything to indicate infection. But she hasn't "fixed" it yet. It's been 5 days since she initially turned it partially inside out.

Again, at this point, if this is healthy and normal, I'm fine leaving it...it doesn't seem to be causing her any pain or bothering her. In fact, she seems to be completely unworried about it, which might explain why she hasn't "fixed" it. I don't want to take her into the vets and stress her if it's not needed. But is it at increased risk of infection since it's "hanging out?" Might it get caught on something? Does the fact that she's leaving it out this long signify there may be something else going on? Or is it just like us where we might have a shoelace untied or a button unbuttoned and not really notice it?

I would appreciate opinions on whether others' gliders have just let their pouches "hang out" like this for a while, or whether a vet visit is in order because it might be being caused by some other problem (I am not very familiar with pouch problems). Like I said, it LOOKS healthy and I don't want to rush her in for nothing. Just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else.

If in doubt take her to the vet.. Better safe than sorry.

You are right that she could have something going on with her pouch and needs to be checked. These little ones can fool you untill the last minute.

A quick look from the vet will put your mind at ease and there may be something he can do. Remember they hide any illness untill the last second.

My glider's pouch looked just like that after she had her second set of joeys. It didn't seem to bother her and it was pink and healthy after 2 days it went back to normal. That was my experience though. Ellen is right though better to be safe than sorry. Please keep us posted.

OK, so I took Tanooki to the vets today. They had a look at her pouch and did a culture on it. I was relieved when they examined the pouch that it looked pink and healthy. It did have some interesting tiny bumps along the inside of it. They looked "normal" though and I'm assuming they were normal. The vet said it looked OK although he admitted he was no pouch expert, and neither am I.

Nothing substantial was on the microscope cultures at all, and since it looked healthy, we are just leaving it be. For now she has it all tucked away. Why she has been letting it hang out for the past week is a mystery. Nothing in her diet or environment have really changed. So we are just going to keep an eye on it for now.

Thanks for your opinions/advice everyone!

I'm glad Tanooki is okay. I know you didn't want to have to take her if it wasn't necessary, but unfortunately sometimes taking them in to the vet is the only way to find out that it isn't necessary! Hopefully now since she's tucked it back in, all is well.

(All the gliders of Russia are my gliders, no doubt...)
Again, the problem is not mine, but one of our glider owners'.
The case is more or less the same: the girl had two babies, for now they are about 2,5 months OOP, and their mother has inverted pouch for a week or so. She behaves normally, there seems to be no infection (the skin is normal pink, no reddness, no bad smell, no festering), and nothing sems to worry her. I'll try to show the pictures later; they are not very good, though. But everything seems very much alike to the situation with Tanooki.
So:
1. What might be the reasons for this inverted pouch, in general, especially if there is no infection?
2. Is there anything that can be done in such cases? - apart from visiting a vet, of course: we have even less "pouch specialists" here.
(The fact is, the vet they visited did not even test the girl for infection because he did not know that it must be done; I adviced they do this - better safe than sorry, yes)
I mean, if there really is no infection, should the owners let it be hoping that the pouch will get back to normal - or can the vets do anything to improve the situation? I believe, the inverted pouch might be subject to infection, anyway...
3. (general question) What infections might cause this inverted pouch, and how can they be detected and treated?

3. (general question) What infections might cause this inverted pouch, and how can they be detected and treated?
1. Since there do not seem to be any symptoms of infection, then in all likelihood the inverted pouch is caused by the female grooming her pouch a lot - is it possible that she has another set of joeys in pouch? Another possibility is that the 2.5 month oop joeys are still pushing their way into her pouch to nurse. Since their heads are bigger, they may be inverting the pouch while trying to nurse.
2. There's not really any way to treat an inverted pouch that isn't infected or swollen. Just continue to keep an eye on it to make sure that it does not start to show any symptoms of infection.
3. If there was an infection, it could be a yeast infection or it could be an overgrowth of the normal bacteria present in the pouch. In either case, diagnosis would be made by gently swiping a swab in the pouch, then the vet would analyze the sample. Treatment would vary depending on the cause of infection. An oral antibiotic may be prescribed. A topical ointment may be prescribed (a topical antibiotic with an anti-inflammatory component). Daily cleansing with a special solution may be prescribed.

That is basically what I was going to say. I'm sorry to say that it's also possible that there was a new joey/s and now there aren't. All my Momma gliders pouches look like this from time to time. hug2

And "little bumps' are normal, too. thumb

My 16 month female did/does the same with her pouch. The vet gave her some trimeth and it went back in but every month for about a week she inverts it again. Nothing swollen or anything of concern...she's just a little nutty...

The girl's pouch is OK now; most probably, the problem occured because the joyeys tried to make their way into the pouch, though they were already too large for that. Thank you for your advices and consultations, anyway; now we know that things like that can occur due to "natural causes", and infection is not necesserily involved. This really is VERY useful.
