I know females will attack joeys of other females.. but do you think surrogate mother hood would work? Or tragic?
I have twins right now, one week OOP. doing great. Bonnie is great mom and so is CLyde a good dad. I read about other joeys being rejected, do you think Bonnie (or any mother) would take someone else rejected joeys while she is nursing anyway? two nights ago Bonnie kept shaking off the babies. She finally got lose (after I stopped her few times by turning on lights) and went to play on the wheel. I was concerned for the girls, but dad was watching them. THe next morning the joeys are attached and nursing again.. I sure am lucky! Whew! But I would like to take in a rjected joey if one is nearby.. maybe she will feed him/her too? or no no??
Bonnie is twice the size of Clyde and has voracious appetite. SO I am very lucky. and in 1 full year she has given 6 births! She came to me with her first set of twins IP!

Sebastian was rejected at 1 week OOP. His mother is named Regina. A female glider named Sugar cared for him until he was ready to come to my home. Sugar did not feed him, the breeder fed him, but she cared for him, carried him on her back, and kept him warm like any mother would do. It is tricky and a risk to find out if another female glider would do this, but I do know that it can happen!

it is very risky to try this. Although it can happen. JIbbet is my smallest female and has rejected her joeys twice. One time I was desperate since I ddin't have the frech cath to feed the joey. Dee had a joey that was a few weeks old then Jibbets so I thought I would try it. Even though I knew it probably wouldn't work. I got Dees joey out and had the 2 babies together rubbing the smeel of Dees baby all over the rejected one. after about 10 mins. I took Dee out of her pouch because I didn't want Flibber (Dees hubby) to attack the joey, and introduced Dee to he joey as well as Jibbets joey. She auto matically started cleaning the new joeys bum and she shoved him into her pouch.. But the joey was to week by then since i found him he was already cold and week and had probably been alone for 2 hours or more with out his mom. She tried 3 times to have him attach to her nipple but he never latched on. I kept them together for a few hours while I went and got the frech cath. to feed him and I even let Flibber join them. he also was cleaning the joeys bum and keeping him warm. Then when I tried to feed him I think I fed to much and some got up his nose. A few hours latter the joey was dead
Jibbets second joey came a few days earlier then I had planned on and I found him down on the ground again. I fed him then tried to put him back with his mom but she attacked him. Dee happend to have another joey just a few weeks older again so I did the same thing. Introduced the jeoys for longer this time since I had fed the rejected joey and then introduced Dee to the new joey and her baby. Again she took right to him and started cleaning him. She didn't try to force him on a nipple though this time but I was ok with that. As long as I could feed him and her and Flibber take care of him (cleaning and keeping warm) I was for sure it would work. He lived for about 4 days and then died again I believe it was my fault because I had to work later one night and missed a feeding and I was sick, took some medicine that knocked me out, set my alarm clock to wake up to feed him again but slept right through it.
Sorry so long. It is possible but I wouldn't trust any of my other females to do it. Dee is just very sweet to everything, she is my only glider that likes my son and my dogs. She is just very special but like I said I wouldn't try it with just any female

Thats encouragin tho.. I think you did the smart thing. You joined the scent of all the joeys.. and it is touching how the new parents treated the little guy...I think it can work!! (Well I would do if only if it can help save the life of a rejectee.) I think you got a great set of parents there. And they were very kind too
As for my conjecture that small females have a higher riskof rjecting babies, I really think it is true now... i just dont think they canhandle the physical strain... I am lucky that my Bonnie is one fat girl!

I don't know I had a tiny mother that was only 63 grams and she was with my largest male (they came paired together) and they had quite a few litters and she was a great mom. Her joeys were always 20-25 grams oop as well because of the fathers size. I'm not so sure it has to do with the size of the mother.
