Today was a dark day for me...but I want to start at the beginning

About 2 to 3 years ago when I was just starting out with breeding my gliders I bought a female that was told to me to be a "Good breeder". A trick of "bad" breeders is to sell an old animal as young or still in it's prime. After I got this female home and had her for awhile...it seemed to me she was older then they lead me to believe.

Her history. Very little is known. What I do know is for some years she was kept in a cage stacked on top of each other. Then the people got tired of Gliders and sold out their breeders. She spent the next 2 to 4 years in a smelly barn. Then she came to me.

At first she was not right. I mean she didn't act like a glider. After eating she would sit and stare straight out. No movement. Like a zomby. I began to realize that she never had toys or a wheel. She never got to play. It took 3 months before she started to try the wheel. Oh! I did try to get her to run on the wheel. But she would just sit there with that blank look on her face. It was around 3 months I saw her go to the wheel and take 5 walking steps. Then she would go back to sitting. But she was coming out of her shell. At this time she started to look around more than stare. By the time a year was up she was using the wheel and toys. She also slim down.

Today I have had her about 2 and a half years to three. But I noticed in the pass few weeks she was slowing down. Today she was in a bad way. I rushed her to the vets. He could tell right off she was old. He said at least 7 years more than likely over ten. Her body was giving out. Her heart was weak, her liver was inlarged, and her eyes where cloudy. Nothing to do for her. She was old and dying. I had her put to sleep.

She was "just another nameless breeder glider" But not ture!!If she would of stayed where she was at she would of died and been thrown away. BUT! She had a name!

I want you to remember "Chubby" Chubby died in my hands today. I pet her head and kept saying "You're a good girl" as she went to sleep. Chubby did have joeys in the past. So tonight Give an extra kiss to your little angel, and remember Chubby. For you just might be kissing one of her children or grand-child...or great-grandchild. Chubby never had a joey for me but I cared for her just as much as anyother glider.

One last word...
"Chubby was NOT a good breeder glider, she was just a GOOD glider!"

Bitsy

It's always hard to lose a friend. Your words were powerful enough to make me cry. I don't cry much, but reading this post did me in. I always say friend instead of pet because I NEVER think of any animal as a "pet". You can always get another pet, but you can NEVER replace a friend. That is what you lost today, and that makes today a sad day. But cheer up, because one day, we'll join all our friends again. While we are still here, we need to keep making a difference like you did! Keep up the good work!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It matters not that she was old, but that she loved you and vice versa. She was your baby, to me it's the same as a friend.

Oh, if only breeding mills were illegal! I am happy for Chubby, that she got to live her last years in happiness; that she did get to know the loving touch of a responsible and caring owner. It breaks my heart to hear about breeding mills... My boyfriend's parents have a Cavalier King Charles spaniel that was a breeder for ten year or so. She's old now, still scared of new people at first, incontinent and on meds after years of breeding and presumed other abuses. But she is a good dog. If you show her a kind turn she will timidly approach you for more affection. It is so sweet and yet so heartbreaking. Thank you, Bitsy, for caring enough to take Chubby in, for loving her, and for sharing her story.

[:"magenta"]i am sitting here bawling, too. it is comforting (at least for me) to know that she did learn to play, and that she finally did learn what love feels like. i am so sorry for your loss. [/]

I too was brought to tears over the story of you and Chubby. May she rest in peace and may you find comfort in knowing that in the end, SHE KNEW and got to experience what love was all about. I am glad the two of you were placed with one another.

I am so sorry for your loss. May your pain be lessened knowing that Chubby is happily glidin and waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

My heart goes out to you on the loss of Chubby. Taking an older rescue in can be heart-breaking but also has many rewards as you know. As others have said, at least Chubby learned to know what love was in her final years and you were the one to offer her that most precious gift. So never forget what the power of your love did for Chubby and that you now have a special little watching/waiting for you on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

What a touching story, I'm so sorry for your loss of Chubby. I'm sure she is looking down on you with lots of love too.

Thank you all I didn't know her story would touch people the way it did. I guess because I'm not only sad but angry. I didn't want her passing to go without "Someone" knowing "She was HERE!" Her life was not good. She should (as all animals) have been loved from day one. Don't praise me! I didn't do really anything for her that was great. I just did the basic. Good food, toys, and a kind word, with a scratch on the head now and then. Also I don't know if I made this clear, but she had no name until she came to me. Anyway...I just don't want her to pass from this word to the next without anyone knowing she was here! She had a name! And she knew how to love! Thanks again for your support. I know Chubby would of love it too.

Thank goodness Chubby was rescued by you; you showed her that the world was not all bad. sounds like you really reached out to her with genuine love and affection.

Chubby will be remembered; I'm so sorry that you and Chubby did not have more time together. You are an angel.

I've already spent time with my babies tonight, but I have tears streaming down my face and am going to go give them all another kiss and hug goodnight...in memory of Chubby.

I'm glad on what you did to Chubby. Others have obviously neglected her and yet you cared for her. Basic care was surely unavailable for her for a major part of her life. Thank goodness she went to you, even for just a part of her life.

It matters not that a man had a great life or accomplished miraculous things if the most basic, most needed affection for another living being, whether it is man or beast was never realized. A life's story without love is not worth anything. You showed Chubby more than you know. Most people don't show each other the devotion you gave her. I am sorry for your loss. Chubby may not have been able to tell you, but you showed a courage and kindness that meant everything to her. Brightest blessings to you!
