this was inspired by a post on another board about those giving quick fix answers to medical problems.. where many times those quick fix answers could cause the life of a glider.
just as a personal test for yourself, as quick as possible answer these questions, then search as many websites as you can for their answers, then as a 3rd step, check the message forums for the answers to see what new information has been found.
there are right and wrong answers, however, this is just a personal test for yourself to see the differences.. and to see how dangerous self diagnosis can be.
of course we are going to have people who are cheating in the steps, but in the end, i am hoping that people learn from what they find
what are HLP symptoms?
what is the treatment for hlp symptoms?
is there anything else that can cause these symptoms?
what tests need to be run to check to see what the real problem is for treatment?
what exactly is giardia?
how is it contracted?
how is diagnosed,
what are the symptoms for giardia
what is trichomonas?
how is it contracted?
what are the symptoms ?
how is diagnosed?
what is streptococcus?
what is enterococcus?
what are the symptoms?
how is it diagnosed?
what causes uti's in gliders?
how is it diagnosed?
now check to see what organs can also be affected by any of the above if not treated properly, or damage that can not be treated.

As a physician myself, I think that is probably the best advice I have ever heard.....think about what you would do if your friend told you that spot you have is just a sun spot.....would you believe it or would you find out what it was from a professional, read everything you could about it on the internet and then use all of the information you gathered to determine what the best (appropriate by scientific proof) treatment to pursue.....now back to the answers to your great list above....in this community there are a few topics which will strike debate amongst the veteran gliders, even among vets we have found differences.....what are our best places for the pursuit of more scientific information and when there is great discourse, how do we decide?

WOW! That was a slap to the back of myyy head! I'm ashamed to say that I know very little about any of those questions. Thanks for making me realize that it's time to study up a little more. :o)
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOOOO HOOOO, WHAT A RIDE!!!

Signs and Symptoms: Paralysis Lethargy Limping Fractured bones Tremors Weakness Loss of use of hind legs or favoring one leg Poor gripping ability is there anything else that can cause these symptoms? other problems that may show the same symptoms.. Vit E deficiency, protein deficiency, too much calcium, vitamins.. etc what tests need to be run to check to see what the real problem is for treatment? Treatment: If caught in time, this disease is reversible Seek veterinary care immediately. Only a veterinarian can do the necessary testing and treatment plan, which may include calcium, vitamins, hospitalization, and more. what exactly is giardia? THE MONSTER PARASITE how is it contracted? They may be transmitted from host to host through consumption of contaminated food and water or through contact with the stool (feces) of an infected host how is diagnosed, through fecal trichrome test is the most reliable for diagnosing Giardia what are the symptoms for giardia? Diarrhea, green color in stools, lameness, vomiting, dehydration. what is trichomonas? A bacterial disease caused by a flagellate organism known as trichomonas. Tirchomonads are usually pear-shaped and posses anterior flagella with a recurrent anterior fagellum which is attached to the body as an undulating membrane. Trichonomas can infect birds, cattle, dogs, carts, rodents, primates, and humans, among other species. how is it contracted? Ingesting food or water contaminated with the trichonomas organism what are the symptoms ? Enterococcus are bacteria that live in the digestive and genital tracts. Two types of enterococci -- Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium --occasionally cause human disease, most commonly urinary tract infections and wound infections. Other infections, including those of the blood stream (bacteraemia), heart valves (endocarditis) and the brain (meningitis) can occur in severely ill patients in hospitals. Enterococci also often colonize open wounds and skin ulcers. what are the symptoms? urinary tract infections and wound infections how is it diagnosed? unknown what causes uti's in gliders? galvanized wire, very high-protein, high-mineral diets, such as large amounts of regular cat food. how is it diagnosed? Signs may include bloody urine, straining to urinate or dribbling urine, lethargy, decreased appetite, increased thirst or urine output, protruding and/or discolored penis, and weight loss.

HLP can be cause by lack of proper calcium balance in diet. Parasite or bacterial infections can also prevent the absorption of calcium even though there is plenty in the diet. There are other vitamins/minerals which can prevent the absorption as well such as to much iron.

what causes uti's in gliders? galvanized wire, very high-protein, high-mineral diets, such as large amounts of regular cat food. Just like to clarify that's LARGE amounts of LOW QUALITY cat food! I use cat food most days and haven't had a single UTI or any of the aforementioned problems - or any ill health whatsoever in my suggies for that matter.

It scares me cause sometimes it may be hard to tell when your glider becomes sick, and sometimes when you find it it's too late. I know you cant prevent them a 100% from getting sick, but what is the best way to prevent it from happening? and what's should i do if i dont have a vet to go to right away?

Is that why some people offer bottled water?

That, and because some areas water also have an overabundance of heavy metals, chlorine, fluoride, and other organisms in them. It doesn't rule out what might come on produce from the grocery store (which is where washing and trimming well come in), but it's one aspect you can make safe easily and not have to worry about. HTH
Edit: for instance, 2 days ago our city water turned brown again-last time that happened several area residents got sick-and I was again thankful my glider's water comes out of a bottle from the store and not the tap.
