My son left his gliders in someone else's care for 1 1/2 weeks. He returned yesterday to find some sort of white, small parasite-like things at the bottom of the cage. They look somewhat like very small maggots. It could be larvae from, say, a fruit fly, but his concern is that it may have been passed from the gliders in their stool. Ever heard of this? Any suggestions?

My guess is....what you are seeing are larvae of the fruit fly.
The cage needs a total strip down....otherwords scrubbed from top to bottom. After that..keep all foods that are dropped onto the cage wire and tray picked up daily. Spot clean the cage after the food is removed with warm water with a little dish soap added to it.
Not allowing foods to remain in the cage and tray will eleminate the breeding ground for these pesky insects.

I suggest that you clean the cage very good and just keep watching his stool to see if he is passing something that he is not normal. If you get fruit flies how do you get rid of them.

Another good way to prevent them is to wash the cage with bleach water and rinse it REALLY REALLY well. the eggs stick to things! Also, wash all fruit well, to stop more eggs from coming in on your produce.
Fruit fly season is almost over, at least in FL--shouldn't be a problem for much longer!

Thanks to all who replied. I am hopeful that they are only fruit fly larvae, and not some sort of intestinal parasites that are being passed through stool! The cage was sanitized with bleach immediately after it was discovered and, so far, no signs of the "things." Lesson learned: can't always trust others with the care of your babies! Thanks.

http://www.happydranch.com/86.htmlthe above is a website that shows pics of each stage of fruit fly,the body shape of the larvae is very distinct. It may not be fruit flies u are seeing,if it does not look like this. i doubt it would be internal parasites, the only one that would come out and look like small crawling thins would be tape wrom segments, they look like rice. if these u would require a de-wroming from the vet. if they are really small and roundish it could be one of the larger parasitic mites. an injuection of ivemectin under the skin of the gliders will kill them off and prevent them from being on them or in their immediate inviroment. a good clean of the cages may help relieve the problem if it is just the fruit flies. Keeping things clean does help to reduce the numbers and usually the die off quickly then, its been a bad yr for fruit flies..... if u still are not sure what they are i would collect a cpl into a small jar or something u can seal just incase u end up needing to show it to your vet if they come back or don't go away.

You've been given great advice. Another tip I wanted to give you is to try and freeze most of your fruits and vegetables, when they're frozen the flies don't come.

I have those darn things as well. I keep cleaning and cleaning and they keep coming back. Getting really frustrated. Someone suggested using some type of apple vinegar to help attract them and drown them..does this actually work?

They do sound like fruit fly larvae. If they are and you start to get fruit flies the best way to get rid of them is to put some red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar in a bowl and add a little liquid dishwashing soap to it. The flies are attracted to the vinegar and the soap kills them. After a few days the bowl will be filled with them. Change the vinegar out every few days or so. The only bad thing about it is you have to deal with the smell of vinegar but at least you won't have to deal with the flies. It works wonders...trust me! I tried fly paper and it helped, but not enough. After doing the vinegar with soap I haven't had a single fruit fly!
