Hi bourbon!
I am a bit new to this message board and it seems like I have sparked a little bit of a discussion and hoped to get your input. I just got 2 joeys that are 11weeks oop on saturday. I got them from a large breeder
(millermeade farms) that has been feeding them Happy Glider as their staple. When I brought that up here on the board some people told me that it was not a good diet to have gliders on and that i should switch to a proven diet, however the breeder told me that it was a very safe and healthy diet and that is what she has been feeding her 75 breeding pairs. I even called the makers of happy glider in Mo. and thats kinda where you enter the picture. I ask the maker of happy glider Jim was his name if happy glider was a good diet or if it was missing something that the BML has and if i should be using BML to get them used to it. He said that happy glider along with fresh fruits and veggies and mealies or crickets is fine and healthy for them. He said he had even talked to you about happy glider, and that you had said it was a good staple to use. And that you would use it if you ever need a dry food for the gliders? Now I'm not trying to start a he said she said thing, I'm just trying to make sure that I am giving my suggies the good stuff that they need. So do you have expericance with happy glider and do you think that it is an okay staple to use? I do appreciate all your help with this!! Thanks in advance!

Yes, I believe Millermeade farms is a mill, but as I have not dealt with them, I can't know for sure.

Ok, it sounds like happy glider is a staple meaning a dry food you can leave in the cage all the time? Is this correct?

If this is correct, then you still need to pick a diet to feed your glider. A staple is not the main course so to say.

For instance, I feed my gliders the Sugar Glider Exotic diet and it is a mixture that I freeze. Along with that I feed fruits, veggies, and bugs for protein. I leave a staple in their at all times for them to munch on as they want to. The staple I use is compatible with the diet.

Whichever diet you select will depend on which staple to use. Research has been done for many years to determine what is healthy for gliders. That being said, it is good that you are asking the questions, that shows that you are taking the time to learn what is best for your glider. Continue researching the nutritional needs of your glider and don't just assume something is ok just because someone says so. Find out why. What is so healthy about Happy Glider? What is it made out of? These are questions I would ask myself before committing to a diet.

Learn what vitamins and minerals gliders need and why. Then look at the list of diets available and decide which one makes sense for you and why.

Hope this helps a little bit!

I think you should also consider e-mailing Gail, or reading her site's info on diet:

I did read her diet page and I also talked to her about it. I feel comfortable with the Happy Glider and Zed and Bella both have been eating good from what I can see. I guess with some of the posts I have read on the differant boards I was kinda second guessing myself.... Unless I hear that it is not healthy see any problems, I think I will at least for the time being keep them eating what they seem to enjoy!

If you look at that diet page near the bottom, it says she also highly recommends the BML diet and that it is a fresh healthy alternative. I think she knows what she's alking about and if Happy Glider works for her, then good for her.

I can not speak directly for Bourbon but she and I had a discussion about "Happy Glider" which is also called Pet Pro.

The way that it is made, it does not degrade the nutrients of the items they put into it. (unlike many other dry pet foods).

Bourbon and I talked about the benefits of the Pet Pro in the event of emergencies (hurricane evacuations, power outages, etc) and there is the very real benefit of it does not need refridgerated. Soaked in applejuice to soften and you have a fairly nutritious staple. However, I for one would not want to feed it as my full time diet and I would not put it in for them dry. It has a very abrasive texture to it. (think captain crunch cereal and the roof of your mouth, ouch)

As said, it is NOT a complete diet by any means. It is intended to be fed with fruits, vegies and an addition protien source.

I do agree that the texture is a bit rough, I will be soaking it a bit to soften it from now on. The suggies are eating a good blend of the 3. 3/4ths of their diet is the happy glider while the remaining 1/4th is fresh fruits and extra protein from mealworms.
On a side note: Nome63 you may want to pick up their "flavor pack" They have several flavors that you can choose from. I just took the flavor that she said they have been feeding on, but I will be ordering the flavor pack for added variety soon!

First things first... Happy Glider is a decent diet. I've used it before and Gail's used it for years. Gail actually has a pet pair that's 13 years old that's been on Happy Glider for the last 7 or 8 years and still produces joeys from time to time. So, it obviously is giving them what they need.

In regards to Millermeade farms being a mill... I have been to Gail's several times. Her animals are her life and her livelihood. All of her animals are extreamly tame and you can tell they know her personally, so she handles them all regularly. While not all of them are her "pets" some of them are her "pet pairs" and she's bonded with them.

I actually own 2 gliders from her. Honey, a gray, and Teddy a WT. They are 2 of the tamest gliders I own and both are very healthy and well adjusted.

Bella is eating out of my hand, has no problem letting me pet her when she is in her pouch and last night she jumped into my hand and let me move her from one side of the cage to her food dish. I got them on 04/22/07!!!!
Gail is great! She tells everyone to plan on spending at least an hour with the gliders before you leave so they can get to know you. She answers any questions...even if you ask them in 3 differant ways:) Best of all she is available to answer any questions I have even after the purchase! A mill....like a puppy mill? No. Not even close.

Thanks for your input Lenya...I was hoping to get info from people who are or have been feeding with happy glider!

I have fed Happy Glider to my girl. That's what she had been on 10 months before I got her. She is also using that right now while we're waiting for the ZooKeeper's secret to get here.
One thing I would like to say is this: no one on GC has said that the diet is horrible and isn't giving your glider what they need nutritionally. But, it is not a proven glider diet. That's like a automobile manufacture designing a car and not having it crash test rated. It doesn't mean the car will crumble on impact, it just hasn't been proven to not do so.

I have said before why I like the SunCoast diet and so don't feel I should add it again, but I would like to briefly give my observation on the two staple foods (zookeeper's secret vs happy glider).
The happy glider pellet is not completely eaten, and the mushed up remains are thrown out of the cage. Not all of them, but since I don't like that, for me it is a problem. I did not notice this with the zookeeper's. Also, the happy glider has a somewhat funky smell, but I do not mind the zookeep's. Alas, this depends on the glider slave.
When followed as directed (some people forget or disregard the directions), it is much like the SunCoast diet (as I have said before. Just a different staple food). One big difference are the vitamins. The SunCoast calls for two types of vitamins, while the happy glider diet does not. This is what makes me uncomfortable. I do not feel knowledgeable enough to make the call that they are in the food and it's okay, or if adding them would throw off the diet. Since my gliders are on the line here, I'm playing it safe and sticking with the SunCoast diet.

Thank you for reading this.
