I've just gotten him and another female. The female is wonderful, playful and healthy.. the problem is when we first got him from a breeder at the homeshow, his eye was odd. It would close up and become sealed by his tears for a while, he was lethargic and unhealthy. So we called the breeder and was told it was fine, just put some LA-200 in his eye. Well that didnt help, now a week later his eye is purple and after a vet visit.. he has Cornial edema. Has anyone encountered this condition before? I've changed his diet completely away from what the breeder instructed to what the vet instructed and I'm hoping that will help him and his disposition as he is mean toward both of us and snaps regularly.

Well, I have no idea wht LA-200 is, so sorry this is happening to you. And I would imagine he is in some discomfort if not pain for the edema, an eye isn't a place you want swelling. Humm. I know someone here will come along with more experience. Does the vet have him on any pain meds. Did you feel comfortable with this vet, does he seem to understand gliders? Is he on any medication from the vet?
I would not think his disposition will be his end dispositon, don't think you have a mean glider, just a sick one.
Please keep us updated. And sorry your first post on GC has to be such a serious one. Welcome to GC.

Hello. Welcome to GliderCENTRAL... it's great to "meet" you.

Sorry your first experience with gliders is a rough one... it can be hard for people when they get their gliders at homeshows or flea markets, since sufficient good information is not made available to them at the time of purchase. Good for you for searching out the information you need!

I have had a glider w/ corneal edema before. My vet gave us an anti-inflammatory and some ointment to keep the eye moist -- since he was not able to close it easily. Also be sure that the pouch is kept clean and both gliders' nails are kept nice and trim... since that eye will be more exposed than usual. I live in a rather dry area, so I set up a humidifier in the glider room to help slow the drying of his eye between ointment applications.

Eye problems can sure become serious quickly... as you saw.

Let us know how he's doing...

As for the biting, it's really not a surprise. He's not feeling well, and having come from a breeder who would sell at a homeshow -- it's quite likely that he's not been handled regularly at all. Here are some Bonding Articles to help you out.

i would try to get to an exotic knowledgeable vet or have your vet contact one on the board get him on a good diet like BML and with the right care and love the meanness will go away. he bites out of fear. i would bite too under a stress of being around a new environment.

Infections of the cornea can be painfull so it is not going to help this little guy's disposition for now.

Is the infection viral or bacterial?

What kind of meds did the vet perscribe for treatment?

Leafshadow, it's normal when a glider goes to a new home for him to be a bit nippy and crabby, after all, you're a giant to them, they have no idea what you're going to do to them, and they're probably missing their parents and just had their whole world turned upside down. It takes time with a glider that ISN'T sick and in pain, which is probably where some of it is coming from.
>>Please can I ask where you are located? They sell gliders at homeshows in this area, many times ill, and we have no vets in our database for Utah, if you are here. I can recommend some good ones, though. Before bonding or anything, though, that eye needs to be taken care of. It can lead to the glider's death if left alone or not treated properly (we also have some not so good vets here). I hope your little one is hanging in there!

i got my gliders from a home show too. i would say thats not the best place to sell them. you normally don't buy a PET at a home show you buy stuff for your home and get ideas. i got mine from custom cage works and one of them had an eye infection. i got an rx for: gentamicin sulfate 0.3% it worked really well. got rid of the heating rock . i had never even sean or heard of sugar gliders so when i got home i went to the net and researched my butt off. i have to admit i was like "what did i get myself into" all the info seamed so over whelming. take it day by day and learn all that you can. this is the best web site i learned from. now taking care of them is a piece of cake. i them so much!
good luck and welcome to Glider Central

I'm an optometrist, so I work on people's eyes rather than gliders', but Natalie's post was excellent. As I would tell any patient who called with a "red eye", diagnosis can't be made over the phone (or on a message board for that matter). You HAVE to go in. That said, the treatment Natalie described sounds very reasonable. I would encourage you to make sure the vet you choose has experience with sugar gliders/exotics. Corneal edema is more of a sign/symptom than a diagnosis. It can be caused by anything from injury to dryness to infection from bacteria or virus, to what we doctors refer to as idiosyncratic causes (which means we're idiots and we don't know what the cause is). What treatment besides the change in diet did your vet prescribe?

Also, while it's definitely important to make sure he's on a healthy, proven diet, I would be very careful changing his diet too suddenly, especially when he's sick. Gradually move him from the old diet to the new. He's already dealing with a new home, new people around him and a sore eye. Go ahead and let him still have some of the food he's used to in addition to the new stuff. What diet did you and your vet pick?

By the way, I've never heard of LA-200 either.
