Need quick help from anyone who may have experienced this problem....We've got sugar glider and have had him for the last four years...last night he seemed fine, jumping around and playing in his cage....this morning, approx 9ish I noticed him just "hanging" on the side of his cage...seems very lethargic, hardly ate any of his food from last night altho he did eat some...he "looks" sick but I can't seem to find anything wrong with him on the outside....my husband is currently holding him and the glider seems to just want to burrow in the crook of his elbow. Within the past few days, about 4, he had developed a "bald" spot behind on the back portion of his head....any ideas? I'm concerned.

I am a little confused. You said you just got him then said (I think) you have had him 4 yrears?

First have you checked him for dehydration? The best thing to do is to take him to the vet as soon as you can.

At the top of this forum there is a Post that gives you an idea of what to ask the vet and what to check for.

If he is dehydrated try getting fluids in him.

[:"green"]I would get him to the vet ASAP! He sounds very sick & he may need immediate help. Try calling your vet's # even though it's Sunday - they may have a doctor on call who can help. Even though it will cost extra, it will be worth it to save your little guy's life. Definitely may be dehydrated, and probably something else going on as well.
Good luck... [/]

First off, I thank each of you for the advice given and appreciate it very much.
My apologies for just jumping right in with this bad experience as a new member of this site but I was slightly freaked by what happened and was looking for a quick "answer" to my problem. But alas, is not to be. Pookie is currently still at the vets office, they have him in an incubator and are giving him fluid, the vet gave him a 50/50 chance of survival. He's not sure what is wrong with him other than he is severely dehydrated. I called around 2 pm and there has been no change, I'm to call back around 5. I realized Sun afternoon what could have caused this and am kicking myself in the butt. Sat evening when I fed him I was in a hurry and not really paying attention, when we saw him Sun morning looking so bad, we immediately gave him water and kept giving it to him as often as he would drink it, I figured I'd try to give him some food along with it. I got a spoon and scooped some of this food and noticed a smell...put the jar up to my nose and about keeled over...his food had fermented and was bad....he usually eats about 2tbs, and when I checked his dish, he had pretty much eaten it all!!! Ugh, I am sick over this. Keeping my fingers crossed and praying he pulls thru.

what diet was it you were feeding? I am so sorry your baby is not doing well. You are doing everything you can and that is what matters. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers and please continue to keep us updated on how he is doing.

His main food is called Supreme Blend....a local place here makes it for the pet store where I buy it, and also got the sg from, I also feed him fresh fruit every meal, 2-3x wk he gets either chicken or shrimp, if we happen to be having veggies on those evenings I mix them in with it also, he has 2 water dishes at all times and a dish with dried fruit in it at all times.
I called earlier to see how he was doing, they decided to keep him overnight, he was pretty much the same, still very lethargic but his breathing was better, earlier it was very shallow and almost labored. I guess that's a good sign *sigh* but I'm not feeling very confident about the whole thing now. I just want him back!

meet the vet at the office and give him 3 cc's 3 times a day of the bourbons leadbeaters diet. nothing else u might have to feed him with a french catheter so u get it down if he dont eat on his own. the vet will no what that is. thats the best diet i dont think highly of supreme blend or anything else out there. the bml diet saved my glider. when i almost lost her to sickness.

If possible...suggest a C&S. However...if the vet already has the glider on antibiotics it is too late....nothing would show up in it.

on the off chance of sounding totally ignorant here, altho I have heard of bourbons leadbeaters diet, I think, but I'm thinking I saw it on a website and you actually make it yourself?? If it is something you can buy, I have never seen it anywhere, I see that there are quite a few Fla members, any help here? where I can get it? We live on the east central coast, Melbourne

Bourbon's diet plan is known as the BML diet plan. Everything for it is found at the grocery store except for the Rep-Cal and Herptivite which can be purchased at PetCo or PetSmart in the reptile section.

You can find the receipe here. www.sugargliderinfo.com/NutritionAndDiets/leadbeat.html

The mix is blended in a blender and then poured into an ice cube tray and frozen. At feeding time... 1 tablespoon(1/2 ice cube) of frozen BML is given....along with 1 tablespoon of fruit and 1 tablespoon of veggies is fed to the glider.

What is being suggested they ask the veterinarian for a C&S of? Blood? Urine? Stool? I frequently read where "C&S" is recommended, but no specifics about what is being cultured.

Blood would be the best and ideal if one expects a really sick animal, but it is not easy to get. It tells if they are septic, or having a systemic or blood born infection, which is the most serious and life-threatening infection.

Urine would be helpful if there is evidence of a UTI, painful urination, etc., or one is trying to exclude a UTI.

Skin or wounds should be cultured if signs of infection there are present, such as pus or wet fur areas not drying out.

Stool cultures are mostly useless. If there is diarrhea or especially bloody diarrhea they may help to rule out enteropathogenic bacteria, but without gastro-intestinal signs it is doubtful they will yield beneficial info. What grows in a stool culture is rarely indicative of what systemic infection may be happening in other parts of the body.

C&S is often mentioned with a fecal float and smear as a work-up, but one might misunderstand and think that the stool should be cultured. Culturing stool is just not very helpful in getting to the bottom of what is happening with a sick critter. Antibiotics will not sterilize the bowel.

Cultures done while the pet is on antibiotics for UTI or blood infection may be helpful if they recover a germ, as the germ would likely be resistant to what is being used, and is therefore great evidence that the antibiotic should be changed.

I take my gliders to Aloha too I just love Dr. Pepen there

I didn't realize that Incredible Pets sold gliders; do they have them all the time?

And how is your glider doing? any better?

My daughter had a soccer game on beachside earlier so we stopped by the vets to check on Pookie, he looked better, seemed to be a little more active, he's still dehydrated, kinda lethargic looking, didn't have that "shine" in his eyes. The vet said he was not out of the woods yet and wants to keep him a while longer.

Pookie is being seen by Dr Perez, this is actually the first time I have ever had to take him to a vet for a sickness so a girl from Incredible Pets recommended Aloha to me. And yes, they seem to always have gliders at the store, we were there Sunday and they had 3 of them.

Dr Perez is really good too. He preformed a castrationa nd neuter on one of my males a few months back. Aloha is awesome though. Both of my suggies and both of my cats go there and are always taken care of really well.

balding specifically on the back of the head can be an indication of some various vitamin defiecencies. But it could be other things too
Not knowing how old this glider is i wouldn't rule out any geriactirc problems being possible yet either? have u had him since a joey or was he aged?
a vet trip is definitly in order

We've had him since he was 10wks old, he's about 3 1/2 yrs now. We just brought him home with instructions to get some food in his little belly and a dose of antibiotics once a day. Guess the little guy gets to go to work with me this week. The vet wants to see him back on Monday to see how he's doing. As for the bald spot...the vet has no clue, said it could possibly be from stress?? On a good note, when I got in the house, he immediately crabbed at our dog....I take that as a good sign...lol
I have the bml stuff for him made....any suggestions on going ahead and just start feeding him that vs. what he has been eating?? The vet had been giving him baby food, told me to give him that or what he likes....????

What is the vet saying is the problem? If your glider is being given antibiotics, there was likely a problem found. Can you tell us so we can learn from you and your glider?

They don't know what his problem is exactly, they gave him the fluids all day Monday and there was no change in his condition so I am assuming they gave him the antibiotics thinking he had some type of infection. The antibiotic he is taking is called Baytril. I looked up to see exactly what that is and it says it's an antibiotic used to treat many types of infections caused by susceptible bacteria in dogs or cats...

if they did a fecal float etc. they should be able to tell whats wrong with him. again i say have your vet consult one of the glider knowledgeable vets on the board. baytril didnt work with my glider when she was sick with pnumonia dr dan used a shot of penicillin, amakacin and sterile saline for 3 wks after she was on baytril 3 wks and the bacteria got resistant to the baytril. she also didnt eat or drink. i met him at the office 3 times a day with the BML in a cup thawed and had to force feed her while she got her shot of meds and fluids. she was also in oxygen since she was in respiratory distress. what is she eating now thats important in her getting well.

The glider had eaten food that had unknowingly spoiled in his dish....so my guess is it is a food related illness.

If no improvement...I would ask the vet to do a blood culture and sensitivity and possibly different antibiotic for food borne illness. Clavamox is one that comes to mind but you need to discuss this with your vet.

Just a quick update on Pookie....he seems to be doing much better, he is still not confident enough to jump around in his cage but climbs all over the inside of it. He seems to want to be held all the time.
Apparently eating that fermented food had caused severe dehydration, and possible brain damage which caused him to go blind and not be able to open or close his jaw. Altho his eyesight is coming back I don't believe it is fully restored but vet said he'd get it back in time. He's a lot stronger now, eating like a pig!!! Is off the antibiotics as of yesterday. He's able to eat and drink on his own now, it's been about 4 days now that he's been doing that. He still won't glide to anything or like I said jump around the inside of his cage just tends to cling to the bars and walk around it. He's sleeping in his own bed again. He'd been sleeping with me and I'd wake up to find him gone and have to go hunting for him, most definately found him in some strange places..lol!
On an off note...Pookie had a checkup at the vets this past Monday so I took my dog there also for his shots as they were due...they found a tumor in his chest and he had surgery that afternoon to remove it to have it sent off to get tested...Our dog is a 4 yr old Vizsla that we rescued from the Humane Society about 2 yrs ago, he's an awesome dog and this is just tearing us up!! Definately not our month for our animals!!!! We'll find out next Thurs, 28th what his prognosis are.
