Hi all! My year and a half year old, neutered male has been acting funny today. He came out of his pouch at about 2 pm (which is not normal) and clung to the wall of the cage while his cloaca (poo/pee hole) was pulsating and pulsating like he needed to go to the bathroom. Thing is, no pee or poo and he didn't seem to be marking or anything. Then, about 2 hrs. later, I went to take him out of his pouch to come around the house with me in my shirt and he jumped out of my hands and went to the side of the cage again, doing the same thing as earlier. I called the vet and he said it may be a UTI, constipation, or worms?? So, I'm taking him and his female cagemate in tomorrow afternoon to get a fecal and urine test, etc. to see what is wrong. But, I'm still curious as to what's going on. Anyone experienced this with their little ones? Thanks.

Love,
Katey, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />Petrie, and <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />Priscilla

Best bet would be to have urinalysis, and fecal float and smear done and see what comes back. Do you know if he's been pooping regularly and what the consistency is? If its on the hard/dry side he very well could be constipated. If he's not pooping at all, I'd worry about a blockage. A little bit of orange can help constipation, sometimes apple juice. He sounds like he may be in some discomfort, in any case. Be sure and let us know what the vet finds. You might also want to test and make sure he's not dehydrated. Pull up the skin at the back of his neck. If it goes down slowly or not at all, he's dehydrated and needs extra fluids (which could also cause constipation, or be caused by something else with constipation being secondary). 50/50 pedialyte/water or gatorade/water can help with that (mine like gatorade better).

I would suggest straight Pedialyte or one of its competitors. It is better not to mix it with water. The electrolyte content is carefully thought out to correct imbalances and help re-hydrate or maintain hydration. Cutting it with water gives a poorer product, and can lead to problems sometimes (diluting blood sodium levels and leading to seizures). There are both Re-hydration products to correct when dehydrated, and maintenance products to help keep the fairly well-hydrated that way.

Xfilefan is right that Pedialyte doesn't taste as good as Gatorade. Pedialyte is electrolyte replacement and helps with hydration problems. Gatorade is mostly flavored sugar water and is closer to cool-aid. It is a very poor electrolyte solution. Excess sugar can actually aggravate diarrhea. Be careful of the extremely sweet fluids when the critter is dry (you get away with it when healthy), and never, never add sugar to Pedialyte or an electrolyte solution to make it more palatable. If you make it hyperosmolar (put in too many dissolved particles like salt, sugar, etc.) it can aggravate diarrhea just like the excessive sweeties do.

Thanks for everyone's replies. Sorry I took a while to get back to update you all, but I've been busy. Well, I took them in and at first it just looked like my boy was definately constipated, but the vet ran a fecal on both of them to be sure. After a longer than usual wait, the vet informed me that they both have abnormal results. My boy had a type of worm that the vet hadn't seen before and had to look up in a book to determine what it was. And my girl had an egg of some type of protozoan parasite that he hadn't seen in glider before either. I couldn't believe it!! I asked him where/what could have caused this and he said the types of parasites they were could have come from anywhere in the environment. Doesn't help much... He gave them a dewormer and gave me a laxative to administer for ten days and another dewormer to administer in 14 days. I stripped and cleaned to the extreme their cage and toys, pouches, etc. 24 hrs. after the dewormer (b/c they drop the eggs in their poo during that time). Now I just wait, keep giving them their meds and deworm them again in 14 days, clean everything 24 hrs. later after that, and then into the vet for another fecal smear. I've felt so guilty over this...I'm always so cleanly and careful with everything involving them and it's so frustrating not to know where these parasites came from. But, my babies are acting just fine...I just pray that this treatment resolves this problem and that it doesn't return. Well, that's the update...interesting, isn't it? Was a shocker to me!

Thanks for your replies and suggestions,
Love,
